Bienvenue and welcome to the French American International School’s 26th Annual Gala Auction! Every year I’m so pleased to see our community join together to support the School’s efforts and celebrate its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. This year’s theme, Bloom!, is certainly apropos for this time of year, when our campus is ablaze with the colors of spring flowers. But it is the blossoming of our students that takes center stage, as they continue to flourish in so many different ways as we approach the end of the school year. Tonight is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that while having a really fun evening. This night is also about supporting the mission of FAIS, as your generous donations help fund our 2014-15 annual operations in addition to this year’s Special Appeal project. 1. On arriving at the auction check-in desk, you will be given a bidder card that lists your unique bidder number. (One number is issued per couple.) To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid sheet in front of the desired item. The bid number next to the highest bid amount at the end of the silent auction will be declared the successful bidder of that item. If a number is not legible, it will be invalidated and the next lowest bidder will be declared the winner. In the silent auction, the top bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item.

2. You may return to update your bid on silent-auction items, using the pre-printed bid incre-ments on the bid sheet, until the auctioneer announces the close of the silent auction. To avoid being overbid, you may opt at any time to fill in the guaranteed bid “Buy It Now” which is 150 - 200 percent of value, and you will be declared the winner. (No one can outbid you.)

3. Some items in the silent auction are sold on a fixed-price signup basis. These include party sig-nups: group events where seats are sold on a per-person or per-couple basis. These are some-times referred to as Salon Parties.

4. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card in the air, with the number facing the auctioneer. Most live-auction items are sold to a single high bidder; some are sold to a pre-determined number of bidders at a fixed (in a “sweep”) or escalating price (progressive bid). The auctioneer guides bidders through the bid processes.

5. When the auctioneer acknowledges your winning bid, this constitutes a legal agreement of purchase. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject partial advance bids, and has the right to make final determination of the winning bidder.

6. At check-in, guests will be asked to provide a credit card that is captured electronically and which streamlines check-in and check-out. Users of this quick and easy credit card settlement option can bypass the cashiering line at the end of evening, and move directly to fulfillment to pick up their prizes.

7. Payment arrangements must be provided on the night of the auction. Winning bidders must settle item payment at cashiering/fulfillment, which will open near the end of the live auction.

8. Bookkeeping is simplified if auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. Split payments for a syndicated (group) bid, whereby several bidders agree to split the price, can be arranged but may cause a slight delay in cashiering.

9. Personal checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted for payment. Please make checks payable to FAIS or the French American International School.

10. Since FAIS is a 501-c-3 charitable organization, your payments are tax deductible as a charita-ble contribution, to the extent provided by law—generally, 100 percent of cash donations to the Special Appeal (Paddle Raise) and the amount paid over value for items or services. The School’s tax ID number is printed on auction receipts.

Auction Rules

Auction Rules11. A portion of your guest ticket payment is also deductible—this fair market value (FMV) infor-

mation is printed on the back of the invitation. 12. Unless otherwise noted, all goods, services or certificates will expire and must be claimed and

used within a year of the auction date. Restaurant certificates do not cover alcohol or gra-tuities. Hotel certificates are always subject to availability, may or may not cover tax, do not cover gratuities, and do not cover incidental purchases above what is noted on the certificate.

13. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. Certificates, credits or vouchers obtained at the auction cannot be exchanged for cash and are non-transferrable without prior donor approval.

14. The School reserves the right to modify, add or delete items to/from the auction. The School commits to acknowledge all items received four weeks prior to the auction date. Items re-ceived thereafter may be displayed and merchandised at the auction but may not be featured in the catalog due to print schedules.

15. The purchaser assumes the responsibility to remove purchases from the auction premises on the night of the auction, unless other delivery terms are specifically arranged. At the close of the auction, purchasers are requested to retrieve certificates as well as tangible items from the fulfillment center, upon showing their quick-pay receipt or their paid invoice from cashiering.

16. Motor vehicles and property requiring a title transfer or license may be claimed by contacting the donor, with coordination through the School’s Development Office, in the week following the event.

17. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the do-nor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for canceled tickets and/or accommodations.

18. FAIS has made significant effort to describe and catalog all items correctly, based primarily on donor descriptions, but does not warrant nor represent, and shall not be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, provenance or condition of items. Statements made in the catalog or at the auction shall not be deemed as warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Values listed in the catalog are estimates and are not warranted for tax purposes. Auction items are offered “as is” and “where is.”

19. Persons issued a bid number (bidder) assume risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Bidders shall hold the following groups harmless from liability arising from auction purchases: FAIS, its officers and staff, the auctioneer, auction coordi-nators, contractors, event organizers, caterer, sponsors and volunteers connected with the auction.

The Naturalist's Cabinet As part of their study of the insect world, this creative group of third graders explored the world of bugs in art, language, and science. Keep Portland WetInspired by their study of the limited nature of Earth’s fresh water supply, one of our fourth grade classes decided to represent the beautiful city of Portland in blue to emphasize how lucky we are to have an abundant access to water. They used a creative process inspired by an ancient Japanese technique, drawing distinctive features of Portland on foam boards, then covering them in blue ink paint with rollers. When they were imprinted on paper they made blue shapes outlined in white lines, creating a gorgeous Portland skyline of shades of blue. Life in the Deep Blue Sea-ShirtAfter learning that large, wasteful amounts of water are used to manufacture T-shirts, these industrious 4th grade students created a sea-scape tapestry of their own castoff T-shirts. Le Roi SoleilThis project was inspired by the installation work of Denmark-based Malaysian artist Amir Zainorin. The Pattern of UsInspired by the abstract, wallpapered work of artist Jill Ricci, the sixth graders used their budding painting skills to design and execute stencil patterns focused on personal interpretations of color, texture, text, pattern, and cultural symbols. Each student created four designs, from which one was chosen to be combined into a rich collage against a layered background gleaming with the rich colors and luster of an old Moroccan wall. In Our NatureInspired by the London-based Chilean artist Francisca Prieto as well as the ancient Japanese arts of sumi-e painting and origami, the students have created a work that studies the subject of a person's inner identity. Each student chose an attribute to describe his/herself, and using the sumi-e ink and brush technique, illustrated that attribute through symbols of nature. Each student's square illustration was then folded and placed amongst those of his or her peers. Because the folded squares are closing up on themselves, each attribute becomes cocooned or partially hidden, much like our inner identity can be hidden from those around us.
