Irrigation at The Links at Bodega

Harbour had a major problem. Their

solution provided more than expected.

Picture a true Scottish style linksgolf course against the backdrop of theroaring Pacific surf. This is The Linksat Bodega Harbour in Bodega Bay, CAjust about an hour north of the GoldenGate Bridge. Not only is this one ofCalifornia’s most impressive golf cours-es, but it demonstrates a high degreeof conservation by utilizing highly treat-ed recycled water for irrigating thegrounds. Brian Morris, Superintendent, knows that a Robert Trent Jones, Jr.designed course such as this needs thebest in management and equipment. And nothing is more important to agolf course superintendent than a reli-able irrigation system. A good systemmaintains the uniformity needed tosee that every square foot of turf getsits share of water and fertilizer. Withtoday’s emphasis on water conserva-tion, irrigation nozzles and emittersare getting smaller and smallerincreasing the importance of a reliablefiltration system.

Recycled water is stored in a 33 mil-lion gallon reservoir until needed. Hereit picks up wind-blown debris, small fish, snails, algae, insects, and who knowswhat other critters that are destined toplug up irrigation sprinklers. “Without a

premier filtration system,” said Morris, “Iwould have to hire an army of workersjust to clean clogged sprinklers. Greensonly remain green if the sprinklers arefree of debris.”

In 2004 the original filtration systemwas rusting away and the control system

was no longer reliable. A dependablelong term solution was found in Orival.Orival, Inc. uses weave-wire stainlesssteel screens as a positive barrier toorganic and inorganic suspended solids. This company offers a complete line ofautomatic self-cleaning filtration sys-tems with the capability of fabricatingmanifolds and filter connections to fitright into an existing piping system. TheLinks needed immediate action. Orivalmet the needs of The Links at BodegaHarbour by supplying three OrivalModel ORI-06-PE-S all stainless steel fil-ters with optional high-performancemulti-layer screens. The complete sys-tem was shipped the day followingreceipt of the order. Actual installationand start-up took less than a day.Operating in parallel, the three filterseasily handle the 1500 gpm flow and useless than 1% of the flow for self-cleaning.

A solenoid control valve is a keycomponent in the cleaning processused by many filter manufactures. Ifthis valve plugs with debris, such asalgae, the filters will fail to operateproperly. Orival eliminates this prob-lem by using only solenoid controlvalves having 5/8 inch openings thatare virtually clog-free.

The OMNITROL 2000 control systemwas specifically designed to clean eachof the three filters sequentially, takingonly 8 seconds per filter. Because of theunique design, the cleaning cycle doesnot interrupt clean water flow to theirrigation system. “The automatic flushcycle eliminates a lot of maintenancework and the controller gives us theflexibility and dependability we need,”said Morris. He describes the operationof a single filter as follows:

An additional bonus for The Links atBodega Harbour was that the newOrival stainless steel filters cost lessthan the old carbon steel filters hadcost ten years previously. Imagine highquality, low maintenance, reliability andall at a lower cost – all’s right with theworld.
