Term Four, 2019
BOOK CATALOGUE PRIMARY PROGRAM
Hey there! My name is Matt Cosgrove. Just Matt.
Not Matthew. On my birth certificate even. I swear!
I’m an author and illustrator, which means I write the stories and draw the pictures that
get made into books. Books like Macca The Alpaca and the Epic Fail Tales series. Maybe
you’ve heard of them, or even read them? I hope so! If not, borrow them from your
library—they’re really good! I promise!
I’ve always loved books. All the way back to when I was a squishy, booger-munching,
little kid. I especially loved books that made me laugh, like Revolting Rhymes by Roald
Dahl and Quentin Blake. Books filled with cool monsters, like Where the Wild Things
Are by Maurice Sendak. Books that were crammed with gross stuff, like Fungus the
Bogeyman by Raymond Briggs.
I would read those stories over and over again, giggling to myself like a maniac.
Books made me so happy! Even when things in my
real life weren’t so great, like when I was sick and
stuck in hospital, I could read a book and be swept
away to another world filled with laughter.
Now that I’ve turned into a boring, hairy, wrinkly
old grown-up, I write and illustrate the kind
of books I would have wanted to read as a kid.
They’re bright and colourful, cheeky and silly… and
hopefully funny!
As a writer, I love that I get to use my
imagination every day to come up with all
these wild stories. There are no limits to your
imagination. Anything is possible! You can
have a giant robot zombie mermaid or trash-
talking ninjas or a big, bad bully llama. And, as
an illustrator, I can’t believe I actually get paid
to draw and colour-in! Can you believe that?
I’m the luckiest guy in the universe!
There are so many awesome books out there.
Whatever you’re into, I guarantee there’s
a book about it. Do you like footy? There
are fantastic books about footy. Do you
like unicorns? There are unbelievable books
about unicorns. Do you like robots? There
are rad books about robots. Do you like alpacas
playing maracas? There’s even a book about that.
I wrote it!
So, if you haven’t found a book that blows your
mind just yet, keep searching for it. Because
when you find it, that book will make your
toes tingle, your mind melt, and your soul
sing. Happy reading!
Best wishes,
