In 2013, Brampton was able to attract 219 new businesses and 1,423 new jobs. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.6 per cent (from 7.5 per cent in 2012). At close to $1.4 billion, the total construction value was on par with projections. Industrial construction activity was up just over 7 per cent, institutional construction was up almost 10 per cent, while commercial construction activity was down 37 per cent.

Brampton’s new employment and new business figures are returning to pre-recession totals. In 2013 Brampton attracted a mix of new businesses including head office, manufacturing, distribution and retail facilities. Air Canada completed its new Operations Centre and will bring 400 new high tech jobs in January 2014.

Brampton had 31 new Industrial/Commercial (I-C) projects commence construction in 2013, adding close to 2.5 million square feet of new floor space. Projects of note include Phase I of Canon Canada’s new headquarters facility, Unilever Canada’s new Distribution Centre and continued investment in speculative (spec) construction by Orlando Corporation.

Brampton had 11 Industrial/Commercial (I-C) expansion projects start construction in 2013, adding over 270,000 square feet of floor space. Orlando Corporation added close to 140,000 square feet to Excel Logistics and Sota Glazing joined two existing industrial buildings on Van Kirk Drive with a two storey office addition.

Brampton had 26 institutional projects start construction in 2013, totaling close to 288,000 square feet of floor space. New projects included three schools, a place of worship and a paramedic satellite station while additions to existing facilities included nine schools three fire stations and two places of worship.

2013 Residential Activity

2013 residential activity saw increases to average home prices for both new homes and resale. Resale activity by type of dwelling was generally on par with 2012 with a slight increase over the previous year. In 2013 new home starts by type saw a significant decrease over 2012 in all categories with the exception of Townhouse dwellings. Detached dwelling starts were down over 60 per cent from the previous year.

As part of its International Business Strategy, in 2013 the Economic Development Office participated in trade missions to Brazil, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, India and the Philippines. Inbound missions saw Economic Development host seven delegations from China, two from Turkey and one from India.

In May, 2011, Statistics Canada commenced the 2011 Census of Population and the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS). Conducted every five years, the Census survey collects demographic and linguistic information on every person living in Canada. Brampton is the 9th largest city in Canada (Brampton ranked 11th in 2006); 4th largest in Ontario; and 3rd largest within the Greater Toronto Area.

Over the past 50 years (Census periods from 1961 to 2011), a total of 237,965 people immigrated to Brampton. Of the total recent immigrants who arrived between 2006 and 2011, the majority (52.49 per cent or 21,365 persons) arrived from India, followed by Philippines (6.78 per cent or 2,760 persons) and Pakistan (6.31 per cent or 2,570 persons). In 2011, 48.55 per cent (down from 51.46 per cent in 2006) of Brampton’s population were Canadian-born, 50.58 per cent (up from 47.78 per cent in 2006) were foreign-born (immigrant population) and 0.87 per cent were non-permanent residents in 2011. Brampton saw 209 different ethnic origins reported in the 2011 NHS. Brampton’s top ten ethnic origins from 2011 and 2006 are provided below. In 2011, East Indian, the most frequent ethnic ancestry reported, accounted for 30.61 per cent of Brampton’s total population.

According to the 2011 NHS, the largest occupational group in Brampton was “Sales and service occupations” which accounted for 61,540 workers or 22.7 per cent of all occupational groups. Brampton’s labour force grew from 240,985 in 2006 to 281,250 in 2011, an increase of 40,265 persons or 16.7 per cent during the five year period. The largest segment of the labour force was 25-54 years old, accounting for 73.4 per cent of the work activity.

According to the 2011 National Household Survey, the average before-tax family income was $93,817 and the median before-tax family income was $82,935. The average after-tax family income was $81,066 and median after-tax family income was $73,450. The aggregate total income for Brampton was $13.3 billion in 2010. The average household income in Brampton was $89,010 in 2010, up 6.8 per cent from $83,379 in 2005, above the national average of $79,102 and provincial average of $85,772. The number of households in Brampton was 149,270. The homeownership rate in Brampton was 81.7 per cent - higher than the Ontario homeownership rate of 71.4 per cent. Number of tenant households in Brampton was recorded at 27,255.
