To hear these three musicians from far‐flung places collaborateis to take in three souls, listening and greeting one another in auniversal language—seamlessly interweaving two continents andthree bright musical sensibilities. The blend of kamale ngoni (thehunter’s harp) with six‐string guitar, percussion, fiddle, mandolin, and singing is uncommon and familiar while traditional andinnovative all at the same time. This “Afromericana” projectplaces each of these artists in a new sound of common ground.

President’s Letter
I usually try to look forward but I need to step back for a momentand reflect on what we all experienced to start off our new year.
Maybe I’m becoming too sentimental but our Rosh Hashanah and YomKippur services were the best ever at CBS. For you Giants fans let meexplain it like this. Leading off and “hitting” all of their notes wasour CBS Choir. On deck we had our returning all star, Cantor MichaelBuczaczer, followed up by our very own Rabbi Bochner who declinedfree agency and will return to the lineup next year, hitting cleanupand knocking it out of the park was our veteran Ritual Committeeand the MVP award goes to (drum roll please) everyone in thecongregation who sat in their box seats for all 9 innings. All followedup with our victory parade including dancing with our Torah’s onSimchat Torah and like all good athletes we took advantage ofHe’Brew Fest to replace our electrolytes with a “cold one”. Our offseason training starts on November 9th with a little R & R at ourSunday Afternoons at CBS listening to Joe Craven & Mamajowali all inpreparation for Latkes & Vodkas, the 2nd annual public menorahlighting and Hanukkah Party in December. All of this is designed tohave us in playing shape for years to come. For those of you whodidn’t understand my baseball analogy, I was simply trying to say wehave the best congregation and congregants in the league and you’reinvited to join the team.
Shalom,
— Doug Highiet

The Hebrew month of Cheshvan, which follows the holiday‐filledmonth of Tishrei, is also called Mar Cheshvan, meaning Bitter
Cheshvan. The Rabbis of the Midrash imagine the monthanthropomorphically as being sad and bitter that it was given noholidays. After Tishrei’s action packed weeks of Rosh haShana, TzomGedaliah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hoshana Raba, Shemini Atzeret, andSimchat Torah, it is very note‐able that Cheshvan has no holidays. Infact, Cheshvan is the only Hebrew month that has no festivals or specialholiday observances. Of course, even a month without holidays stillbegins with a mini‐festival, Rosh Chodesh (Head of the Month, head ofthe moon). And even Cheshvan is not devoid of holidays: every weekwe celebrate and enjoy Shabbat. This particular year the month ofCheshvan begins and ends on a Shabbat for a total of five Sabbaths inthis one month! Far from bitter, Cheshvan allows us all an opportunityto enjoy our most ancient and enduring holiday: Shabbat.
Shabbat is so many things. To Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel,Shabbat is “an island in time… a cathedral in time” an opportunity eachweek to find a place of shelter and stillness in the rush and bustle ofmodern life. The Torah calls Shabbat a day to “shavat va’yinafash,” aday to Shabbat (as a verb) and soul (also as a verb!). Shabbat is a day tocease, stop, rest, and re‐soul. It’s a day to refresh and re‐connect withourselves, each other, and our world. Shabbat is “human being, nothuman doing.” Shabbat is a taste of the world to come. Shabbat is 1/60of the Garden of Eden. Shabbat is the day when we gather as acommunity for prayer, song, study, meditation, food, celebration, andsocializing.
Our congregation offers song‐filled Shabbat Services every Fridaynight and opportunities to pray and explore the Torah every Saturdaymorning. Beyond our formal gatherings, Shabbat is also a great time fora long nap, a long walk, a long conversation with a neighbor, friend, orrelative, and a long meal. Shabbat is about community; Shabbat isabout food and friends. Shabbat is about song. During this “quiet”month of Cheshvan—give it a try, sample from its 25 hours of beauty, meaning, and peace. Happy month of Cheshvan—Shabbat Shalom!
