Principal’s report Welcome back to all our students and families, and welcome to all who are joining Bulli

High School. It was great to see Year 7 on their first day all looking fabulous and keen

for the next part of their education to begin, and Year 11 in their white shirts.

We have only been back for one week, but already there is a lot happening. A number

of upcoming events are advertised in this newsletter so do look out for them.

Next Tuesday is the Year 7 BBQ which is a casual opportunity for parents to visit, meet

teachers and other parents, and connect with Bulli HS. I look forward to catching up

with Year 7 families.

This year Expo Night is on 5th March, and is open to all primary students and their

families. Please pass on this date to anyone you think may be interested.

Families interested in applying for either of the two Enrichment Classes, The Arts and

The P & C meets next Wednesday in the Staff Common Room at 7pm.

We welcome all parents.

Year 8 VALID results Congratulations to Year 8 2018 and the science teachers. We have received the results and they are nothing but outstanding. More detail can be found in the Science report. Individual results are expected to arrive shortly and will be sent home with students.

Best Start 2019 For the first time, our school will participate in Best Start Year 7, an online literacy and numeracy assessment available to secondary schools at the start of Term 1, 2019.

Best Start Year 7, undertaken within the first five weeks of the school year, assesses key literacy and numeracy skills of Year 7 students. It is designed to assist teachers to identify students who may require additional support in developing their literacy and numeracy skills. No preparation by students is needed. The letter distributed to students is attached.

School Community Charter

The Department of Education has released the School Community Charter which outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive. A copy is later in this newsletter.

Bulli HS Website Last year I mentioned that the department had revamped the school website and that we hoped to have it fully up to date in a short period. I ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to work on it as we are experiencing some construction issues. Unfortunately, old files have been automatically added and so we apologise for any concerns being experienced.

Sentral We are now using Sentral as our administration system. This is a significant change BHS has made and we are doing a lot of learning as we go. Having said that I am confident Sentral will provide a number of benefits for staff, students and parents. Please see the Deputy Principal item for more information on parent access. Train Travel A number of BHS students travel by train to and from school. Whether it is every day or only sometimes all students are expected to behave in a manner that makes us all proud to be associated with Bulli HS. I ask parents to reinforce this with their child, to enable all passengers, including our students, to have a safe and secure ride. I also urge students and parents to pass on any concerns that you have to myself, the deputy principals or a member of staff. The behaviour, good or bad, of our students reflects on every student of Bulli HS.

Bulli HS Alumni We recently received the news below that past Bulli HS student Aiden Lerch had been awarded the 2018 University Medal from the University of Wollongong. Aiden completed the HSC in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength. Aiden is Associate to the Honourable Judge John Hatzistergos AM in the District Court of New South Wales. Aiden graduated with first class honours from the University of Wollongong in 2018. He was awarded the University Medal for ranking 1st place in the graduating class in law in 2018. In 2017, he studied at St Catherine’s College, the University of Oxford as a visiting student. Aiden’s primary research interests are in the law of obligations, particularly tort law and unjust enrichment. Aiden’s work on the tort of nuisance will be published by Cambridge University Press in the 1st Edition of Contemporary Australian Tort Law in April 2019. We love to hear how ex-Bulli HS students are going so feel free to let the school know.

Improved Student Facilities Shade is now available in the TAS courtyard allowing not only shelter for break times but also for classes. Studio B, once a tiered learning space, is now a flexible learning space to be used for classes, presentations and even yoga. Thank you to all parents and students who have helped fund this through contributions and fundraising.

Deputy Principal’s News The year has started in its usual busy way and there is plenty happening this term.

SEEKING HOSTS FOR JAPANESE STUDENTS 13 MARCH – 18 MARCH 2019

All students are invited to be a host for our upcoming Japanese visit. This is a marvellous opportunity to host one or two

Japanese students in your home while they attend school to enhance their English. At the time of writing I do not have

enough host families and ask that you contact me as soon as possible if you are able to host. Every year I see the joy it

brings to those involved!

There is a small payment of $170 per student to help with the expenses. I need to have details finalised by February 20th

so please do not delay if you would like to be involved.

YEAR 12 PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS

Last year we had an informal meeting for parents of Year 12 students to discuss how to make the HSC year as “pleasant”

as possible for all those involved. We have three more planned for this year, with the first coming up at the end of the

month. More detail will be sent home closer to the day but please mark it in your diaries. It will start at 6:30PM.

Deputy Principal’s News

From the beginning of the 2019 school year we have adopted the ‘Sentral’ administration program. Office and teaching staff are now using Sentral and in coming weeks we will arrange Sentral portal access for parents and students. This will replace the Millennium parent and student portal. School administration functions such as roll-marking, attendance, timetables, student wellbeing, behaviour monitoring and school reports will all be managed within the Sentral platform.

FROM THE ‘ODD YEARS’ DEPUTY

Welcome to the 2019 school year. I hope all of our students will make the very most of every opportunity available to

them throughout the year. I’d like to extend a special welcome to the many new students who have enrolled at Bulli High

in Years 9 and 11, and to our new Year 7 cohort of nearly 180 students. Bulli High is a great place to be – I hope you will

relish your time here!

Students in Years 9 and 11 have now had nearly two weeks to settle into their classes and any issues with elective subject

choices should now be resolved. If this is not the case, please let Mrs Swain (Head Teacher Administration) or me know

as soon as possible.

I’d like to thank Ms Rachel Schilbe for her hard work in helping our new Year 7 students settle in. Our Year 7s seem to be

a very keen group and I hope they will quickly feel they are part of Bulli High. Parents, if you have concerns about any

issues affecting your children, their learning, socialisation, or health please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Schilbe or me.

Mr Chris Neave

Years 7, 9 & 11 Deputy Principal

YEAR 7 WELCOME BBQ

All Year 7 students, their parents and carers are heartily invited and encouraged to attend our annual Year 7 Welcome BBQ. The BBQ will be held on Tuesday February 12th from 3:30pm – 5:00pm in the main playground. This is an informal event at which parents and carers will have a chance to chat with teaching staff and meet their children’s new friends.

Sausage sandwiches and cold drinks will be provided. There is no charge. Please take the opportunity to start connecting with the Bulli High community. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Chris Neave Year 7 Deputy Principal

Science

Welcome to Science for 2019. I am happy to be continuing in the relieving Head Teacher role for at least two more terms.

We have some staff changes this year. Mrs Bethany Herrmann joins our Science faculty. She is an experienced Biology

teacher and she is excited at the prospect of teaching at Bulli HS. Mrs Herrmann with be replacing Ms Kara King who is

on maternity leave for this year.

In Science we have a very busy year planned for students. I would like to welcome the year 7 students to Bulli High School.

They are a very enthusiastic group and are looking forward to the experiments in Science. Students will begin the year by

learning about the safe use of the equipment we use in the science lab. They will also learn how to use a Bunsen burner.

The Science junior programs commencing this semester are as follows:

Year 7: Introduction to Science, Working Scientifically and Stage 4 Physical World

Year 8: Stage 4 Earth & Space

Year 9: Stage 5 Physical World

Year 10: Stage 5 Chemical World

The Science course at Bulli High School is designed to provide a highly engaging learning experience characterised by

hands on interactive and challenging activities. The students have also received information and advice on what they

need to bring each lesson and the goals and expectations we have from our students. We want to allow every student to

be able to achieve their personal best. This includes completion of homework tasks as well as classwork and assessment

tasks.

Year 12 Science students are embarking on the new syllabus HSC content, introduced by NESA in 2018. Our dedicated,

highly qualified staff have prepared thoroughly and the syllabus teaching programs, student resources and assessment

schedules have been completed. Students are encouraged to see their teachers and mentors when they need help during

the year.

VALID Test – Year 8

This a mandatory examination for Year 8 students across NSW. It is an online test and takes place in November each year.

The test covers all coursework from Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8) as well scientific skills. We received the results for Year 8 2018

–our current Year 9, on the last day of Term 4.

Once again, the students achieved excellent results. A summary of our results are as follows:

Average Score School 93.94

Average Score State 87.41

Average Score Similar Schools 88.57

No. of students 143

Individual student reports are due arrive to us soon. They will be given to students to take home to parents from their

Science teacher.

I would like to congratulate the students for their efforts and the Science staff who have taught them over the last two

years. I would especially like to thank Mr Nik Brankovic for administering the test.

ONGUARD SAFETY TRAINING

Safety is EVERYONE’S responsibility. An important aspect of ensuring the safety of children and staff, we use OnGuard

Safety. When students log on, THEY MUST make sure they are accessing Bulli High School’s OnGuard. This will appear in

the upper left hand corner of the screen. Our safety training process involves teachers inducting/training students via

demonstrations, followed by students completing a series of mandatory safety modules. This system keeps a digital record

of a student’s safety history throughout their time at school.

New students will need to SELF ENROL to create an account. Teachers will guide students through this process of following

the ‘SELECT his link to Self Enrol NOW!’ The link below will take you to our school’s OnGuard page. You can also access

this from the Bulli High School – Bulli Online web site.

Once students have logged on they can select course modules which run students through the safe operating procedure

for each tool, machine or process and upon completion that can print their personalised safety registration certificate!

NEW APRONS

Thanks to our wonderful P & C for kindly funding new aprons for all of our industrial workshops! We now have new blue

aprons in BOTH metalwork workshops and BOTH timber workshops. Students need to remember that whilst aprons aren’t

the most fashionable of clothing items, they are there for your safety AND to keep your clothes clean, which also keeps

your parents happy too. Thank you once again P & C.

PAST PROJECTS

Over the holiday period our Technology teachers were diligently cleaning and stock taking our rooms. As a result we have

many past projects still residing in our rooms. If you have a project that you are yet to complete or have completed but

haven’t taken home yet, please come and collect it by the end of Week 2 before we commence recycling these projects

into reusable materials.

Library

BULLI HIGH LITERACY PROGRAM 2019

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF YEAR 7 & 8 STUDENTS

As part of Bulli High School’s literacy initiative all students in Years 7 and 8 English classes together with the Librarian will

be partaking in the Renaissance Reading Program. The Renaissance Reading Program is an online program that helps BHS

teachers manage and monitor your child’s independent reading practice.

How does the program work?

The Renaissance Reading Program is made up of two programs, The STAR Reading Test and Accelerated Reader.

All students in Years 7 and 8 undergo a STAR Reading Test at the beginning of every term. The STAR reading assessment

is a multiple-choice test that takes the students approximately 30 minutes to complete. This test determines the range of

books that will challenge your child without causing frustration (their book level).

Students are also assigned a personal reading target and points to achieve in a term. Students earn points, or a portion

of a book’s points, depending on how well they do on the Reading Practice Quiz.

Your child picks a book at their own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on

the computer. Accelerated Reader then gives students and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the

teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

Accelerated reader has over 33 000 titles for students to choose from. All matching books on the program at BHS library

are marked to help students to make their reading selection easier. Students can also access Accelerated Reader

Bookfinder http://www.arbookfind.com.au/ to search for titles of interest.

How can you help your child?

You would have signed a permission note in late 2018.

As with anything, performance improves with practice. Please encourage your child to read at home for at least

15 minutes a night.
