Company HistoryB&W was formed in 1966 as a
partnership between Tom Brownand Raymond Woodbine andoperated from rented premises.
In the early years the partnershipdeveloped a respected local busi-ness working in the Agricultureindustry in a buoyant local farmingenvironment.
These activities expanded and in1978 a limited company was formedas B&W Mechanical Handling Ltd.
and the company moved to alarger dedicated freehold factory atLisle Lane in the City of Ely.
Operations continued at Lisle Lanetill 1991 when as a result of theillness of the founder partners thecompany ownership was transferredto the present shareholders.
As part of the restructuring packagethe Lisle Lane property was soldand the company relocated to its
present base at Lancaster Way.
The Lancaster Way site offered
much improved production capacitywith roughly four times the produc-tion space plus the added benefit ofa dedicated blasting and paintingfacility to satisfy clients demands forhigh performance finishes in themost demanding industries.
The improved production facilitiesdeveloped at Lancaster Way, asillustrated above, have substantiallyeliminated dependence on outsidesubcontractors for fabrication and
finishing with significant gains inefficiency.
In house manufacture has enabledclose quality control in accordancewith ISO 9000 standards and thecompany has now developed anenviable reputation for quality ofconstruction and finish...

In the early 1980s the development
of the EC Grain Intervention schemefor agricultural produce generated avast cereals surplus within the UKand as a result existing storage andhandling systems were unable tocope with the greatly increasedtonnages.
B&W were well placed to capitaliseon this new market opportunity andrapidly developed a range of highperformance handling equipmentdedicated to this industry. In the
agricultural industry B&W hadalready established the Samsonconcept to satisfy the demands ofintensive farming operations han-dling root crops for processing.
The Stormajor design as illustratedopposite grew from the originalSamson principle with the additionof a radial outloading boom ideal forhandling cereals direct from tippingtrucks.
Over the following years the Stor-major became the industry standardfor this market establishing B&W asa main stream supplier...
To export these large quantities of
cereals new export facilities wererequired and B&W reacted to thischanging market by developing anentirely new range of specialisedmobile Ship Loading systems, typically as illustrated above.
The new B&W designs were ex-tremely robust and rapidly foundmarkets outside agriculture...
Recognising the expanding grainhandling market would be short
lived in 1985 B&W embarked on asustained market diversificationprogramme with the objective ofextending the range of applicationof these new products to manydifferent market sectors.
This programme of diversification isongoing and has resulted in a majorshift in emphasis to the heavymaterials handling industries suchas Cement and Steel where continu-ous operation handling aggressive
materials demands the highestengineering standards.

The market diversification from
grain handling to heavy industrydemanded a new approach tomachine design recognising thedemands of continuous processapplications in the Ports, Steel andCement industries particularly.
Whilst changes in machine designand specification were made acrossall products the Samson SurfaceFeeder in particular has undergonea rigorous development programmeculminating in the design of a series
of five distinct models from theSamson 380 to the Samson 3200covering applications from cerealsthrough to heavy mining projects..
The detailed development of theSamson concept has extended to allaspects of the construction match-ing the machinery to the marketdemands to achieve the level ofperformance and reliability de-manded by professional usersoperating in the most difficult
working conditions.
Product DevelopmentIn parallel with the Samson devel-opment associated products such asthe Stormajor and Shiploaderdesigns have undergone a similarprocess of market driven designchanges.
The Stormajor illustrated belowbeing a typical example incorporat-ing full powered travel systems withElectronic Ackerman Steering andintegral on-board diesel gen-setallowing the complete machine tobe driven under its own power
within the stockyard.
Integrated facilities with electroniccontrol systems have been ex-tended to the Shiploader designsexpanding the range of applicationthrough to dedicated export termi-nals handling heavy materialsincluding comprehensive dustcontrol facilities.
With the latest development of thenew Sterling Series of Tower Design
Shiploaders B&W have extended theapplication of mobile equipmentfrom barges through to Cape Sizebulk carriers.

The fundamental principle of
Surface Installation and Mobility iscentral to the marketing philosophyof all B&W products focusing onflexibility and economy combinedwith high engineering standards forlong term reliability.
By avoiding the expensive fixed civilworks associated with traditionalunderground pits and hoppers newprojects may be realised economi-cally with the flexibility of futurerelocation should plant development
demand.
Similarly with Mobile Shiploadersand Stackers high performance maybe maintained without the need forfixed infrastructure allowing fasttrack economical solutions maximis-ing return on capital investment.
Combining these principles witheffective pollution control andreduced operating and maintenancecosts offers the client a unique
opportunity to increase productivityand profitability without sacrificingreliability or performance.
Market DevelopmentThe mobile Shiploader as illustrated
above is typical of this philosophyincorporating the Samson equip-ment with an Outloading Boom to afully mobile chassis with poweredtravel providing autonomous opera-tion.
Similarly the Stormajor oppositedemonstrates how a barge loadingfacility may be made on a riverberth with no foundations or civilworks.
This concept of mobility is extendedto Mobile Link Conveyors operatingin a stone quarry with a MobileCrusher eliminating the need for afixed primary plant.
In addition to the benefits of lowercapital costs and fast track availabil-ity surface equipment retains a highresidual value and may be sold-onwhen not required...!!
By applying high engineering
standards to surface equipmentB&W offer a radical alternative tofixed installations in any workingenvironment

Pollution ControlControl of dust emissions isa critical element in all new
plant designs to minimiseenvironmental pollution.
The Samson concept is inherentlysuperior to conventional undergroundpits and hoppers when handling dryand dusty materials.
With the Samson the material isdrawn from the truck body in a con-trolled stream with minimum mate-rial fall.
Since the material fall is substantiallyreduced air is not displaced from theSamson enclosure and therefore anydust generated is not immediatelydispersed aggravating dust pollutionin the surrounding area.
By minimising material fall and con-trolling the flow from the truck thematerial does not separate into freeparticles and therefore dust genera-tion is almost eliminated.
By minimising dust generation atsource it is generally not necessaryto provide dust extraction facilities inall but the most environmentally sen-sitive locations.
Even where dust extraction is consid-ered necessary the air flow rate issubstantially reduced.
Combined with the Kleen-Line con-veyor design at the Samson dischargetotal dust emissions are closely con-
trolled.
By minimising dust genera-tion and therefore extrac-tion requirements the totalproject cost and the ongo-ing operating cost is greatlyreduced making the com-
bined Samson and Kleen-Line solution even more at-tractive...

Special ProductsTripper Carriages: -
Travelling Trippers discharge a troughed
belt conveyor at any point along its
length for stockpiling applications using
fixed overhead conveyors.
Tripper Carriages may be supplied for
operation on structures produced by
others or as a complete installation as
illustrated opposite.
For Ship Loading operations the travel-
ling tripper may be combined with a
quayside conveyor to discharge material
to a travelling Shiploader.
The Tripper may be self powered or may
be linked to a travelling stacker boom or
Shiploader for rail mounted installations.
Plough Dischargers: -An economical alternative to the travel-
ling tripper the Plough Discharger may
operate on virtually any troughed belt
conveyor.
Ploughs may be positioned at fixedintervals along the conveyor as shown
opposite or may be mounted to travel-
ling carriages to cover an extended
discharge area.
The plough system is not suitable for all
materials but in many applications this
solution offers excellent reliability.
Drive Over Doors: -For drive-over-tip applications where
conventional grill bar opening may cause
bridging and blockage handling cohesive
materials the automatic Drive-Over-Door
system has proven effective.
The system illustrated opposite is
combined with a Samson sub-floor
feeder incorporated into the new Rugby
Cement development handling clay, coal
and pet-coke.
Whilst the system is ideal for the
Samson it may be used effectively withany type of underground hopper/feeder
equipment.
