CAMP STAFF:Brett Boretti, Head CoachUnder Brett Boretti’s leadership the Lions have won two Ivy League Championships and three Gehrig Division titles since 2008. The 2013 season marked the best in Columbia Baseball history. The lions set
a new program record for Division 1 wins with 28 and won their first ever NCAA Regional game beating New Mexico in an epic 13 inning affair. The Lions have had five players drafted or signed to professional baseball contracts the past two seasons. 2012 was another strong season for Columbia, which won 20 or more games for the second time in three seasons and finished with a .600 winning percentage in the Ivy League for the second time during that span.
In 2011, the Lions began the season at 7-3. It was the best start for a Columbia team in 23 years as the Lions finished the season with the best fielding percentage in program history.
Six Lions gained All-Ivy honors after the 2012 campaign. Already, Boretti has coached 39 players to All-Ivy recognition.
Peter Maki Pete Maki is in his sixth season as the Lions’ Associate Head Coach. In each of the past two season, Columbia pitching staff has ranked among the top two Ivy League teams in earned run average.
In 2010, Columbia’s pitchers led the Ivy League in team earned run average for the first time in 23 seasons. The Columbia staff also set a school record for strikeouts in a season with 293. As a staff in 2010, Columbia’s pitchers had better than a 2.5:1 strikeout-to-walkout ratio, one of the best in the country.
“First and foremost, Pete is an excellent teacher,” notes Boretti. “I like his style of communication and he has been a great fit for our program and the young men with whom we work.”
Dan Tischler Dan Tischler reuinted with his former college coach Brett Boretti and joined the Columbia baseball staff as an assistant coach in June 2012.
Tischler played four years at Franklin & Marshall and was a team captain in 2008. In the 2007 season,
Tischler was named first team all-conference and was a second team all-region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Tischler graduated cum laude from Franklin & Marshall in 2008 and received his Master’s degree in education from Columbia’s Teachers College in 2012.
Jimmy Walsh Jim Walsh is the longest tenured assistant coach on Brett Boretti’s staff, in his eighth season alongside the Columbia skipper. Walsh joined the Columbia staff as an assistant after serving as the head baseball coach at St. Peter’s College for four seasons.
Playing at Upsala College of East Orange, N.J. under coach Ed Lyons, who spent over 50 years in the game, Walsh was the 1989 New Jersey College Division Player of the Year as a pitcher ans All-Middle Atlantic Conference as a designated hitter. He graduated in 1989 with a degree in business administration.
Walsh, his wife Susan, and two children, Kate and Jack, live in Westwood, N.J.
