CCGC President’s Report AGM 13 October 2007
3. President’s Report At the last AGM the Club was in a state of physical flux. Building of Stages 4 & 5 was not to be completed officially until late February 2007. The following eleven months witnessed an extraordinary amount of work from the Management Committee and volunteers to both outfit the new areas and develop our programs to utilize new spaces efficiently and equitably. The good will and good nature of all concerned: coaches, gymnasts and office staff, continues to make this transition successful. Defining the Club's activities this year were our contributions to the gymnastics scene in the ACT Region. The Club made history by being selected as the venue for the gymnastics event in the Capital Youth Games in March. By all accounts this was most successful and was followed by ACT Championships for Women's Level 4 to 10 in May. Even more historic was the Men's Invitational that the Club hosted in April. Our hospitality, as well as the medals and trophies, were warmly received by gymnasts from the major clubs in the region. The Club is also proud to be the venue for the gymnastics event of the Special Olympics ACT Region State Games to be held in November and the Junior National Games in April 2008. Other events in our calendar: Christmas Cup Challenge and Kindergym Challenge were once again most enjoyable for both organizers and participants alike. The Club was also pleased to be able to assist a fellow club, Rollers, when it ceased operation. Although a difficult time for transferring gymnasts and families, we hoped that we had made it as smooth and welcoming as possible. The associated Friday after school program at Lyneham has continued successfully. A highlight for 2007 was the Club's official opening of our new Stages 4 & 5. Guests included officials from the Minister's department, Special Olympics ACT Region, the Australian Sports Commission, the ACT Gymnastics Association, the Women's National Coach, Peggy Liddick and, of course, the Club's founders Dr Les and Dahlia Sharp. The new aqua cocktail, the Canberra City Cartwheel, was launched and Club officials are still testing and refining this concoction. This was a fantastic, capstone event for all - an opportunity to thank our mentors, to receive complimentary feedback and to enjoy meeting up with old friends and first generation gymnasts. The Club was particularly chuffed to receive Dr Sharp's congratulations on bringing Canberra City to its maturity! It has also been pleasing to welcome Canberra Diving Academy, Canberra Trampolining and Canberra Circus to training opportunities in the Club. More recently, University of Canberra's School of Teacher Education students have begun using Canberra City as the venue for their training in the basics of teaching gymnastics. This makes for a very vibrant and diverse gymnastics scene at the Club and also exposes retiring gymnasts to further participation opportunities. The Club has been fortunate to continue employment of professional staff and to have the services of dedicated volunteers, therefore ensuring a vigorous team community. During the next period, the Committee has new things to grapple with, not least of all the maintenance of a larger club, both physical and membership wise, while noting one of the major associated risks: personnel and succession. Of practical interest will be the continuing disruptions from building sites both immediately west and also east of the Club, where new office buildings are to be erected. We note, however, that the more activity surrounding us, the less crime and vandalism occurs around our facility.

Gymnastic Results
Following a most successful 2006 competition season, Club gymnasts and coaches have again enjoyed excellent participation and outcomes, both locally and interstate, with Men's ACT Championships and Nationals Clubs still to come in November and December. Results are at the end of this report and well and truly speak for themselves. This year the Club fielded maximum entries in both national and state competitions. In particular, recent Grading competitions saw magnificent representation by record numbers of CCGC gymnasts. This is a testament to the encouragement given to gymnasts by their coaches as well as successful promotion of the competitions by the afternoon and Saturday morning program coordinators. Staff
The Club's continued development can be attributed to our enthusiastic and dedicated staff. This year saw Mary Schumacher take up afternoon Program Coordinator duties and Naomi Nye the Saturday morning Program Coordinator duties. We welcomed new MAG coach, Christopher Beer; Junior Cheer coach, Dale Pennycuick; and more recently, the return of senior WAG coach Alexander Kostenko. Also, WAG coaches Vanessa Elphick and Elyse Baldwin. A further fourteen young coaches have been inducted into assisting and coaching roles, which augers well for the Club's future. In particular, we congratulate Jess Donahue and Jake Silvestri for achieving their Level 1 coaching accreditation and 2007 Coach-of-the-Term awardees: Alison Finlayson, Elissa Sharp, Jess Donahue, Mischa Calnan and Aaron Hutchinson. We also welcomed Traci Ward to the office assistant position. The Club farewelled long-standing Gymnast and Coach, Natasha Schumacher, Coach and Choreographer Amber Ashley and Office Assistant Helen Preston, much in their debt for their wonderful contribution.
Membership. External Programs. New Programs. Membership numbers for 2007 are now 960 and have again surpassed last year's high (from around 630 in 2003). These enrolments are for the whole year and include children participating in our Schools program. Where possible the Club participates in Community events, contributes to youth education, eg: supporting PCYC's KidSmart publication. We have been pleased to donate prizes to pre-school and school trivia events. The Club's website, www.canberracity.org.au, promotes our profile to the wider community, as is reported on our new-enrolment forms - coming second to word-of-mouth as a way of finding /deciding on a gym club. External Programs
Programs at Charnwood (TEAM gym), Gungahlin (CCGC-RAGE), 'Majura', Miles Franklin and now, Lyneham, have stabilised at very solid numbers. It was great to see these programs represented at the ACT Levels 1-4 Grading day. Congratulations to all coaches coordinating these satellite venues!
CCGC President’s Report AGM 13 October 2007
New Programs
The Baby's Class has developed a small following and has confirmed how much and how quickly our littlest members are able to learn.
GymABLE, the Club's program for people with a disability, is developing strongly under Coach Mary Schumacher and has five athletes participating in the SOACTR State Games event in November. The Club was also fortunate to receive a 'Community Sport and Recreation Development Grant for Target Populations' to run a pilot program: GymABLE Schools. The grant of $1760 assisted the Club to bus in 2 classes from Turner Primary for 5 weeks of gym classes during term 3. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
CCGC's Full Day School Holiday Program was trialled this year very successfully and is now booked out before term ends.
CCGC Birthday Parties are now being offered and look like being a lot of fun.
Schools Program
After-school classes at Aranda Primary and lunchtime classes at Cook Primary continue to be enjoyed by youngsters. The coaches continue to do wonderful work in what is normally a diverse class grouping. Although Cook Primary is closing at the end of this year, Canberra City has been asked to continue the program at Macquarie Primary School!
Education
This year has seen a continuation of the Club's Professional Development Workshops held, as a minimum, at the start of every term following Staff meetings. The Club values education highly and subsidises these events and other updating opportunities - mostly from funds raised through Christmas Cup, an event where coaches and judges donate their time. Attendance at these workshops provide points towards staff re-accreditation requirements and this year the Club has been able to step this up a notch by providing external presenters such as educators, exercise physiologists and sports medicine staff. Senior Club (and National) judges also prepared and presented a basic Level 0 Judging Course on behalf of ACT Gymnastics. Building, Infrastructure and Equipment. Setting up the Multi-purpose room, the Tumble floor and the Pit Room has been a major undertaking. Thank you to all volunteers that assisted in preparing these areas for Term start this year! MAG equipment and Gas Heating to new areas had been high on the priority list. Finishing touches are still being applied with last week's transfer and welding of the High Bar to the far East wall, thus making Vault #3 more useful for groups rostered there. Just like Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is back to repair work on damaged sprung floor areas. In parallel: work has already begun on the Committee approved ducted vacuum system. The next required major work is the installation of large whirly vents in the roof of the main gym hall. Builders advise an expected completion within the next six weeks. New to the Club this year was the brewed coffee (and soup) machine - feedback has been very positive and thanks go to franchisees Doug and Therese Wright.
CCGC President’s Report AGM 13 October 2007
Office & Administration. Communication.
Still to do is networking of the office computers to further improve office operations and communication. Coach and Program coordinators' position continue to improve the all-around communication at the Club. In particular, the Kitchen/Meeting Room/Coaches Resource areas and noticeboards are now pretty well set up, having been strewn everywhere during building phases. Management Committee Committee Member, Kerry Glover, resigned during the year. I would like to record the Committee's thanks to Kerry for her work on jobs that were rather unpalatable, for organising the sign identifying the Club on College Street, for being available at various parent group meetings, not to mention her development of the CCGC Cartwheel Cocktail. Thank you also to Lesley Dickens who bravely filled the casual vacancy on Kerry's resignation.
Volunteer Efforts. Grants. Awards.
Volunteers and fund-raising occasions continue to contribute to the Club's physical and social well being. Acknowledgment plaques around the gym identify many pieces of equipment and refurbishments supported by Sausage Sizzle funds (current $7000 ear-marked for some of the equipment purchases mentioned in this report). Travelling gymnasts (Caloundra 2006; Hawaii 2007; Brisbane 2007) are also supported by a separate Travel fund where all chocolate sales income resides as well as funds raised by specific events, eg: Trivia Night (contributed $1500 towards travel to Nationals in Brisbane), Party Plan afternoon coming up (4th November) on the tail of the CCGC SLEEPOVER. Supporting the volunteer effort is not only very productive but a great deal of fun. A BIG THANK YOU!
GymABLE pilot grant has already been mentioned. The Club is awaiting news regarding an infrastructure Grant Application to WESTs. We continue to be recipients of the Sports Loan Interest Subsidy Grant - every quarter -until 2015!
Congratulations to - The ACT WAG Level 10 team, including CCGC gymnasts Phillipa Dickens, Laura Peel and Elise Wright, having been nominated for a 2007 ClubsACT Sport Team award. - Melissa Orr for her nomination for both a 2007 ClubsACT Sportsperson award and a 2007 WESTs Sportsperson of the Year award. - 2007 Coach-of-the-Term awardees: Alison Finlayson, Elissa Sharp, Jess Donahue, Mischa Calnan and Aaron Hutchinson.
The Club welcomes nominations for these awards.

Gymnast Scholarships: To Level 8 Gymnasts, Melissa Orr and Brittany Thomas for their performances at National Championships.
Maintenance, Equipment and other Purchases
Post AGM 2006 came the installation of the Audio equipment (~$7000) just in time for Christmas Cup. Our latest order includes another Soft Vault, 300mm Landing Mat, Action Box and new Ropes, Beam Mats - $4500. Required Roof Vents: $20000. Ducted Vacuum System: $3600. The Club also ensures other services to its coach, judge and gymnast members - including the availability of uniforms/merchandise nominally amounting to $4000 stock-in-hand.
CCGC President’s Report AGM 13 October 2007
Auditor
Ray Buchanan retired rather suddenly this year and the Club was most fortunate to appoint Christine Reid & Associates to undertake the Club's Audit. I would like to record our thanks to Ray Buchanan for his advice and services to the Club over many years. With a change of Auditor comes a different approach, and we have survived the change! It is pleasing to report the auditor's commendation on the highly organised administration and good operation of the Club. Referring to the financial statements……
Although the operating surplus looks rather grand, we should note that the cheque account balance came in at $10962. Expenditure following the financial year included $15000 for Gas Heating to new areas. Throughout, our Not-for-Profit charter has been a priority and the Committee has taken every opportunity to re-invest in Club infrastructure and resources for all members benefit. The Club's loan repayments are $5622 per month and the SLISS quarterly grants have been around $9000 this year (decreasing to around $200 by 2015) - and have been classified as income. As of last quarter the Committee agreed to arrange to pay the loan on a two-weekly regime and for the SLISS grant to be deposited directly into the Club's CBA Business Loan account. I am pleased to report that these measures have now reduced our Loan Liability to $401000 and will hopefully reduce the debt to match the reducing grant amounts.

In conclusion….. Some new goals for the Club and its Committees include considering a Building Stage 6 - developing external areas for both outlook, safety and security. Ongoing are the review and renewal of policies and management plans such as strategic and risk analyses. In particular, the Club is required to renew its Club 10 accreditation through a substantial National Standards quality assurance process over the next six months. Finally, we look forward to a period of stability and consolidation, with the challenge of maintaining what we have all worked hard to develop: a fantastic environment and culture for all levels of interest and participation in gymnastic sports.
