Sustainability at the University of Leeds has a high profile and is being embedded
throughout the organisation; driven through our ambitious Sustainability Strategy. This
role will support this ambitious vision, through setting future plans for travel and make
them a reality on the ground, supporting our procurement activities to become more
responsible and more generally supporting our campus being a sustainable and vibrant
place to be.
We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, who can build and
develop strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and who can apply
their excellent working knowledge and experience of sustainability to develop creative and
innovative approaches to our sustainability challenges.
What does the job entail?
As Sustainability Project Officer, you will:
Be responsible for communicating and updating the University Travel Plan,
ensuring it is kept up to date, in line with the Sustainability Strategy and reflects
sector and legislative changes. Monitor and report progress against the Travel Plan
performance targets;
Project manage the delivery of sustainable travel solutions, in conjunction with the
other members of the Sustainability Service, liaising with relevant departments to
ensure the development and delivery of project objectives on time and within
budget. Oversee the running of one of the biggest U.K. University Bike Hubs and
driving real change in our business travel practices;
Work proactively with internal and external stakeholders, in relation to sustainable
travel, and wider sustainability initiatives where appropriate, to develop strong
working relationships and to identify and secure new funding;
Support sustainable procurement activity, in conjunction with the Sustainability
Manager, including reviewing sustainability elements of Pre-Qualification
Questionnaires and tenders;
Track, report and reduce our Scope 3 carbon emissions; supporting both internal
and external reporting and the setting of future targets;
As part of the Service team embed sustainability within the University culture
through supporting the development of new initiatives process and identify and
develop opportunities for research and student education and engagement relating
to sustainability;
Promote and uphold University values through personal example and working
practices.
These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive
list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post.
What will you bring to the role?
As Sustainability Project Officer you will have:
A degree or equivalent qualification preferably in a sustainability related discipline;
An excellent knowledge and understanding of the holistic nature of sustainability
with experience of working in a sustainability role;
Excellent understanding of sustainable travel and how to facilitate change in this
area;
Excellent organisational skills with an ability to work under pressure and to respond
to continually changing priorities and demands;
Strong analytical skills with a good eye for detail and experience of developing
creative and innovative approaches to sustainability challenges;
Experience of developing effective working relationships with a proactive and
positive approach to working with a wide range of stakeholders;
Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to adapt
communication style to different audiences;
Demonstrable behaviours in line with University values.
You may also have:
Experience of working in a sustainable travel environment;
Experience of sustainable procurement;
Excellent understanding of the higher education environment.
