My View of the Situation
• Demand for information security consultancy is very high, and constantly growing
• There is a clear lack of local knowledge and companies, research, initiatives - all behind Europe
• Several universities have good programmes, but
• It takes time to produce the people needed
• The programmes concentrate heavily on technical aspects
Technical vs. Strategic
• Information security consists of a lot of different aspects
• Technical – protecting against hacking, code breaking, system intrusion, denial of service, …
• Non-Technical – policies and procedures, social engineering, awareness training, compliance with standards, …
• Both need to come together to achieve information security
What can be done
• More initiatives on non-technical topics, to achieve a better balance (university programmes, ISA)
• Practical experience – internships, working as consultant, more involvement in the private sector
• Understand the market need• Take activity to address it• Use your personal way to increase
security by talking to people and make them see
Thoughts on the Future
• The interest in information security and standard compliance will increase
• The security problems will surely increase• Amount of data and interconnectivity will
increase• Cloud services will change the IT landscape• Far more opportunities to get
involved
