AGreen Mission • Combine organics with manure in anaerobic digester to
create energy and ferFlizer • Help make farms more economically sustainable by adding
income streams • Help food processors be more sustainable by recycling food
scraps for a zero-‐waste food chain • Compliment current composFng efforts to divert maximum
amount of organics from landfills • Reduces Green House Gases (GHG) by capturing methane
from manure and replacing “dirty” electricity • Replace chemical ferFlizer used on farms and grows more
feed for animals • Makes way for greenhouses using “waste” heat, ferFlizer, and
CO2 in winter for more local foods. www.agreenenergyllc.com © April 2012 2 AGreen Energy, LLCAGreen Energy, LLC

Rural Job Making
1 project = 12 FTE Jobs Created $3M per digester plus $2M in infrastructure for organics
diversion
Organics Diversion to ferLlizer from landfill
Environmental Benefits
1 cow reduces GHG emission = 3 cars Produces organic ferLlizer Improve air/water quality
BeVer nutrient management on farms
1 cow = power for 1 MA house plus power and heat to farm

Use of liquid fertilizer from Jordan Farm doubled the hay output with no chemicals used – no GHG – doubled the food used to feed the cows to make the milk. A enclosed food chain.
Opportunity for dairy anaerobic digesters model to contribute to U.S. bio-‐economy
Dairy industry can generate value by repurposing food waste from landfills, converting into renewable energy and providing for ecosystem services.
$2.9 Billion

One out of three food calories is wasted -‐ POTENTIAL
• 29% of America’s food supply lost consumption
• Estimated total value at retail and consumer levels was $165.6 billion
• 273 pounds of food per person per year
• Disposal costs add one billion dollars in local taxes annually
• Coming State bans on organics in landfills – MA set for 2014 to start organics ban

Remaining Challenges
• LogisFcs and infrastructure of gathering and removing contaminants from organics from many sources, is sFll a huge challenge, parFcularly with residenFal
• Permikng pathway is cumbersome – to be helped by new DEP regulaFons but will need conFnued work as organics processing develops
• Finance barriers to developing anaerobic digesFon – banks require 10 year agreements on all feedstocks
• Change – move all of the food industry to see re-‐purpose of organics as a source of power; less GHG; and more food.
