Casa Vicens was designed by Antoni Gaudí and built for industrialist
Manuel Vicens.
It was Gaudí's first important work.
It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni
Gaudí" in 2005.
The house is constructed of undressed
stone, rough red bricks, and colored
ceramic tiles in checkerboard and floral
patterns.
The owner, Manuel Vicens, was the
owner of a brick and tile factory, so the
ceramic tiles pay tribute to his business.
The yellow, zinnia-flowered tile, designed
by Gaudí, was manufactured by Vicens.
CASA VICENS ALSO REFLECTS GAUDÍ'S LOVE OF NATURE.
PLANTS THAT HAD TO BE DESTROYED TO BUILD CASA VICENS ARE
INCORPORATED INTO THE BUILDING.
GAUDÍ BASED HIS DESIGN FOR THE PRESSED TILES ON THE FRENCH
MARIGOLD (TAGETES PATULA) WHICH GREW IN THE GROUNDS OF THE
ESTATE, MARKING THE BEGINNING OF HIS WIDESPREAD USE OF NATURE AS
AN INSPIRATION AND A MODEL.
The wrought iron found on the
façade and balconies has been
shaped into the form of natural
objects- plants and herbs- and
reflects Gaudi’s deep connection
with nature.
