Dear Reader,
We enter 2021 with a spirit of hope and confidence. For many of us, 2020 was undoubtedly the most difficult year in living memory, but we trust that the worst is now over, and that we can look forward to better days.
Despite the pandemic, the lockdown and the various challenges we experienced, we have more or less been able to publish all the books that we had scheduled for last year. This year’s programme, therefore, is entirely new – and full, as usual, of exciting new titles spanning all our main series and a multitude of languages and genres.
Our Evergreen list will see the publication of three seminal novels by George Orwell (Nineteen Eighty-Four, Animal Farm and Keep the Aspidistra Flying), as well as Margaret Mitchell’s epic novel Gone with the Wind, set during the time of the American Civil War, and Bernard Shaw’s eternally popular play Pygmalion.
The two standout titles in our expanding 101-Pages list are Henry James’s Daisy Miller and Heinrich Von Kleist’s collection of tales, The Marquise of O— and Other Stories. In the classics series, we are adding two more novels to our series of the complete works of Virginia Woolf and Arthur Conan Doyle, while our Alma Junior and Great English Poets series will see the publication of Louisa May Alcott’s Good Wives, the sequel to Little Women, and the Selected Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley.
In short, there is a wealth of new books to choose from – and don’t forget to browse our website, where you will find over twenty unique collections, such as the F. Scott Fitzgerald fifteen-volume fiction collection, the Bulgakov complete fiction collection, as well as other bundles of books from beloved authors like the Brontës, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Céline, Queneau and others, all offered at an irresistible discount of 50%.
I hope our selection of titles will cheer you up in these turbulent times, and we thank you once again for your continued support.

LETTERS FROM LONDON AND EUROPE
Giuseppe Tomasi d i Lampedusa
PThe Leopard, published posthumously in 1958, was one of the most important works of fiction to appear in the Italian language in the twentieth century. Between 1925 and 1930, its author, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampe-dusa, wrote a number of letters to his cousins Casimi-ro and Lucio Piccolo in which he describes his travels around Europe (London, Paris, Zurich, Berlin).

DEAD F INGERS TALKWilliam S. Burroughs
with an introduction by Prof. Oliver Harris, Keele University
Dead Fingers Talk is, in the words of Oliver Harris, “a prophetic work of haunting power”, and is perhaps the most commercial and accessible of Burroughs’s works. Combining new material with selections from Naked Lunch and his cut-up novels The Soft Machine and The Ticket That Exploded, the book is also a fascinating precursor to remix and mash-up forms in art and music, which owe much to Burroughs’s influence. This newly edited edition, based on the restored text of the novel, will delight all lovers of experimental literature and offer a new insight into the artistic process of one of the most original and influential writers of the twentieth century.

THE EMERGENCY ZOOMiriam Halahmy
It is late August 1939: Britain is on the brink of war, and preparations are under way to evacuate London’s children to the countryside. When twelve-year-old Tilly and her best friend Rosy find out that they will not be able to take their beloved dog and cat with them – and that, even worse, their pets will, along with countless other animals, be taken to the vet to be put down – they decide to take action. THE STORY OF A SEAGULL AND THE CAT WHO
TAUGHT HER TO FLYLuis Sepúlveda
THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
A moving, uplifting and life-enhancing story with a strong environmental theme. This edition contains over 70 illus-trations by prize-winning illustrator Satoshi Kitamura.
Caught up in an oil spill, a dying seagull scrambles ashore to lay her final egg and lands on a balcony, where she meets Zorba, a big black cat from the port of Hamburg. The cat promises the seagull to look after the egg, not to eat the chick once it’s hatched and – most difficult of all – to teach the baby gull to fly. Will Zorba and his feline friends hon-our the promise and give Lucky, the adopted little seagull, the strength to discover her true nature?

Alma Junior’s series of illustrated classics includes some of the greatest books ever written for younger readers, as well as new translations of unjustly neglected international works. Our aim is to give our list an international feel and offer young readers the opportunity to connect with other cul-tures and literatures – this applies not only to the titles we choose but also to the illustrators we commission – so that we can bring a bit of novelty into the canon of British children’s lit-erature. All Alma Junior Classics contain extra material for young readers, including a profile of the author, a section on the book, a list of characters, a glossary and a test-yourself quiz.
THE ADVENTURES OF PIPI THE PINK MONKEYBY CARLO COLLODI
TRANSLATED AND EXPANDED BY ALESSANDRO GALLENZI
WITH COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS BY AXEL SCHEFFLER
Collodi wrote this story immediately after Pinocchio, and the little monkey’s adventures present clear similarities, both in terms of themes and characters, with his more celebrated masterpiece. Incredibly, they also share some characters, including a 10-year-old boy named Alfred who was once a wooden puppet.
Pipi isn’t like his four brothers or the other young monkeys living in the forest of Hullabaloo: he has bright-pink fur, a mischievous character and a rebellious streak that lands him into all sorts of scrapes. In this story, an expanded version of Collodi’s original tale, we see him lose his tail to an ancient crocodile, end up as a valet to a young master, fall into the hands of flying bandits and become emperor of a tribe of apes.
THE BEARS’ FAMOUS INVASION OF SICILYBY DINO BUZZATI
WITH A READER’S COMPANION BY LEMONY SNICKETWITH COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS BY THE AUTHOR HIMSELF
Starving after a harsh winter, the bears descend from the mountains in search of food and invade the valley below, where they face fierce opposition from the army of the Grand Duke of Sicily. After many battles, scrapes and dangers, the bears’ reign is established over the land, but their victory comes at a price.
