What is the desert in our own lives?
What can we learn from it?

Opening Hymn
New every morning is the love
our wakening and uprising prove;
through sleep and darkness safely brought,
restored to life and power and thought.
New mercies, each returning day,
hover around us while we pray;
new perils past, new sins forgiven,
new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
If on our daily course our mind
be set to hallow all we find,
new treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.
Only, O Lord, in thy dear love
fit us for perfect rest above;
and help us, this and every day,
to live more nearly as we pray.
John Keble 1792-1866 CP6

Gradual Hymn
Christ triumphant, ever reigning,
Saviour, Master, King!
Lord of heaven, our life
sustaining,
hear us as we sing:
Yours the glory and the crown,
the high renown, the eternal
name!
Suffering servant, scorned,
ill-treated,
victim crucified!
death is though the cross
defeated,
sinners justified:
Yours the glory…
Priestly king, enthroned for ever
high in heaven above!
sin and death and hell shall never
stifle hymns of love:
Yours the glory…

Offertory Hymn
At the name of Jesus
every knee shall bow,
every tongue confess him
King of Glory now:
this the Father’s pleasure
that we call him Lord,
who from the beginning
was the mighty Word.
Humbled for a season
to receive a name
from the lips of sinners
unto whom he came,
faithfully he bore it
spotless to the last,
brought it back victorious
when from death he passed.
In your hearts enthrone him,
there let him make new
all that is not holy,
all that is not true.
He is God the Saviour,
he is Christ the Lord,
ever to be worshipped,
trusted and adored.
When this same Lord Jesus
shall appear again
in his Father’s glory,
there with him to reign,
then may we adore him,
all before him bow,
as our hearts confess him
King of Glory now.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 25 February 2018
Final Hymn
'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said,
'if you would my disciple be;
take up your cross with willing heart
and humbly follow after me.'
Take up your cross; let not its weight
fill your weak spirit with alarm;
his strength shall bear your spirit up
and brace your heart and nerve your arm.
Take up your cross, nor heed the shame,
and let your foolish pride be still:
your Lord refused not even to die
upon a cross, on Calvary's hill.
Take up your cross, then, in his strength
and calmly every danger brave;
it guides you to a better home
and leads to victory o'er the grave.
Take up your cross and follow Christ,
nor think till death to lay it down;
for only he who bears the cross
may hope to wear the glorious crown.

Psalm 22.24-32
Chant: Camidge, Matthew (1758-1844)
24 O praise the Lord, all | you that | fear him:
hold him in honour, O seed of Jacob, and let the seed of | Isra . el
| stand in | awe of him.
25 For he has not despised nor abhorred the poor man | in his | misery:
nor did he hide his face from him, but | heard him | when he |
cried.
26 From you springs my praise in the great | congre- | gation:
I will pay my vows in the | sight of | all that | fear you;
27 The meek shall eat of the sacrifice and be | satis- | fied:
and those who seek the Lord shall praise him —
may their | hearts re- | joice for | ever!
28 Let all the ends of the earth remember and turn |to the | Lord:
and let all the families of the | nations | worship . be- | fore him.
29 For the kingdom | is the | Lord’s:
and he shall be | ruler | over . the | nations.
30 (Unison) How can those who sleep in the earth | do him | homage:
or those that descend to the | dust bow | down be- |fore him?
31 But he has saved my life | for him- | self:
and my pos- | teri - | ty shall | serve him.
32 This shall be told of my Lord to a future | gene- | ration:
and his righteousness declared to a people yet un -| born, that
| he has | done it.
