Sisters and brothers,
Each year, Catholic Schools Week recognizes the mission and achievements ofCatholic schools throughout the United States. For us, it is another opportunity toshare with all people the values, academic excellence and sense of community thatdefine the Catholic school experience.
The timing of Catholic Schools Week could not be more fitting as the Dioceseof Camden prepares for our March 2019 Convocation of Catholic Leaders: TheJoy of the Gospel in South Jersey. The focus of the Convocation is a call to “mis-sionary discipleship” — to live the Gospel, not just as followers of Jesus Christ, but as evangelizers of the Good News.
Missionary discipleship is at the heart of Catholic Schools, where our studentsare formed in the faith, share faith experiences and learn to serve others.Throughout our diocese, students, families, teachers, staff and administrators cre-
ate school communities that bear witness to God’s great love for us. I hope you will enjoy this edition of the Catholic Star Herald’s Catholic Schools
Week section. But more importantly, consider a Catholic education for your child,or suggest it to someone you know who is searching for a school that educates thechild academically AND spiritually. Or, if you are able, please help by financiallysupporting a Catholic school.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend Dennis J. Sullivan, D.D.Bishop of Camden
Hermanas y hermanos,

When my children were being bullied at school,I knew just how they felt. Before moving to
this country, I was bullied for not having parents. Mymother and father had left — not because they want-ed to, but because they wanted a better life for mysister and me. Everyone at school made fun of us.For two years, we didn’t have friends and we werelonely at school. I couldn’t understand why we hadto be apart from our parents.
When I was 11, my 8-year-old sister and I came tojoin our parents in the United States. But the bullyingfollowed me. My first day at school was the worst daypossible. I didn’t know the language and everyonemade fun of me because I couldn’t understand whatthey were saying. It took me two years to learnEnglish. I wanted to prove my desire to be in theUnited States, to learn and to be a better person. I wasblessed with many people who helped me, and I want-ed to prove to them that their help was worth it. Aftertwo years of being bullied for being different, Ibecame one of the top students in my school and grad-uated from high school with one of the best GPAs.
I never thought my children, who were born in theUnited States, would face the same challenges I did,but the bullying began with my son when he was just5 years old. My twin daughters used to cry and say,“Can we please stay home. We hate school.” Theywere becoming shy, mad and insecure, just as I hadonce been.
My husband and I began to think about differentschools, but we didn’t know how we could affordtuition with three kids. We had heard about SaintJohn Paul II Regional School in Stratford at ourchurch, and it took a year to finally ask one our goodfriends for information about the school. We made anappointment with the school principal, Mrs. Persing. As soon as I walked in, I felt the difference. Ithought, “This is exactly what I want for my kids.”
Mrs. Persing explained how the school worked andsaid we might be eligible for tuition assistance,
thanks to generous people who donate to help fami-lies like mine.
Now my children are getting a good education andthey have a stronger relationship with God. They arenot afraid to come to school. They are happy andconfident. They have friends and play sports. Theydon’t hear anyone telling them, “You are not goodenough.”
I appreciate everyone at Saint John Paul II whogives my kids the love they receive at school everyday. Coming to the school has changed our livesand my kids’ future. I pray to God every day that hecontinues to bless everyone who gave my kids andmy family this amazing opportunity when we need-ed it most.

Tienen amigos y juegan deportes.
As soon as I walkedin, I felt the difference. I
thought, “This isexactly what I want

My wife and I attended Catholic gradeschool, high school and college. Wealways knew we wanted to provide our
children with this same experience, but when thetime came, our circumstances had changed. We wereliving in a great school district, we both worked full-time, and busing to a Catholic school was not avail-able to us. We had some big decisions to make.
One summer morning we met with LaureenBrady, advancement director at Saint MargaretRegional School in Woodbury Heights. Within 10minutes my wife had made up her mind. Thefamiliar feel of a Catholic grade school, welcom-ing staff, and signs of our faith throughout thebuilding had sold her pretty quickly, but I had lotsof questions. I wanted my daughters to grow infaith, but their academic and extracurriculargrowth was just as important. Mrs. Brady waspatient and informative, explaining how importantacademics were at Saint Margaret’s and how suc-cessful the students were after leaving the school.Feeling happy with our decision, our daughterstarted the Pre-K 3 program.
It’s three years later, two of our daughters are atSaint Margaret’s and we couldn’t be happier. Thereis something to be said about sharing experienceswith others who have similar values and traditions,
and that is exactly how we feel about our schoolcommunity.
Since my wife and I work full time, transportationis not easy. We are fortunate to have a neighbor nowattending Saint Margaret’s, which helps a lot, but itstill has its challenges. A few months ago our kinder-
gartener asked why all the neighbors get to ride thebus together. I explained they go to a different schoolthat’s closer to home. She asked what was differentabout their school and I told her they don’t get tolearn about Jesus or go to church. The look of shockon her face was priceless as she asked, “They don’tlearn about Jesus?” I immediately thought, “This iswhy we send our girls to Catholic school.”
Saint Margaret’s challenges students academicallyand helps them grow spiritually. The values instilledin our children are the same we teach at home. I con-stantly hear, “That’s what Mrs. Noonan says too.”The idea that a teacher is delivering the same mes-sages when it comes to schoolwork and real life situ-ations is so reassuring.
At dinner one evening before Thanksgiving weasked the girls, “What are you thankful for?” Our 3-year-old said her family. Her class had been talkingabout the importance of spending time with familyand friends and the point hit home with her. Our 5-year-old’s response was, “I’m thankful for myschool.” My wife and I looked at each other with asmile of content and I know we were both thinkingthe same thing: That is something you can’t put aprice tag on.
Our parents sacrificed to send us to Catholic schooland we see the multitude of reasons why. We arepaying it forward and giving our three girls the price-less opportunity of a Catholic school education.
Shared goals at home and at school

“The Gift of a Lifetime” is more than just atagline for South Jersey CatholicSchools. Gospel values, academic excel-
lence, a supportive community, and opportunities toserve others are among the many gifts our studentsexperience every day. They are gifts that shape ourgraduates for life. And they are gifts our students andgraduates bring to the communities where they wor-ship, live, work, and serve.
Our schools in South Jersey do everything possibleto make the gift of a Catholic school educationaffordable. Most people do not realize that everyfamily who attends a South Jersey Catholic elemen-tary school receives tuition assistance.
The average tuition charge in our elementaryschools is $4,500, but the real cost to educate is anaverage $8,000 per student. That results in a gap, ordiscount, of $3,500 per student. Since many familiesqualify for further discounts, the actual gap is evengreater.
There was a time when many parishes funded thefull cost of a Catholic school education. This modelwas not sustainable, so tuition was introduced as away for families and parishes to share the cost. Insome areas of the country there are no parish subsi-dies. In the Diocese of Camden, parish financial sup-port continues through the Inter-parochial CatholicSchool Fund (ICSF), a pooled resource that is allo-cated among the elementary schools each year. ICSFfunds cover a portion of the gap; fundraisers andannual fund appeals, gifts and donations, and grants
make up the difference. Securing essential funds is a year-round effort for our schools.
There are many ways to support the gift of aCatholic education — even if you don’t have school-aged children or financial means.
• If you are interested in a Catholic school educa-tion for your child, apply. Even if tuition seems outof reach, you may qualify for additional tuition assis-tance. You will be asked to apply for financial aidwhen you complete the school application process, soyou will know up front if additional support is avail-able.
• Consider making a contribution to the school ofyour choice or to the South Jersey Scholarship Fund, which supports elementary and high school studentswho attend diocesan schools. Visit www.southjersey-catholicschools.org and click “DONATE NOW” tosupport the scholarship fund.
• Be a voice for legislation that supports Catholicschools. In 2018, thousands of Catholic school sup-porters in the Diocese of Camden answered requeststo contact state legislators. Their voices (and perhapsyours) were heard, and funding levels were restoredfor busing, technology, security, and school nurses.Imagine if the nearly 10,000 students in South JerseyCatholic Schools suddenly went to local publicschools. At an average $19k cost per pupil to edu-cate, it would cost the state $190 million to accom-modate our students.
• Pray for our schools and our students.
The Gift of a Lifetime is alive and well in SouthJersey. On behalf of the Office of CatholicSchools, I thank our administrators, teachers andschool staff members, our families and students, our priests, parishioners, donors and vocal support-ers, and our great and giving God for the ability tocontinue our mission: to educate and inspire youngminds spiritually, academically and in service toothers.

“Reach out. Apply for scholarships. Make sacri-fices.” Those are words of advice from
Ayanna Plummer, a 2018 graduate of Holy SpiritHigh School, Absecon.
Growing up in a military family, Plummer movedand changed schools several times. Her familyreturned to South Jersey from Fort Hood, Texaswhen she was in middle school. Plummer said thatwhen it came time for high school her local publicschool was not an option. Had it not been for tuitionassistance, Holy Spirit wouldn’t have been an optioneither.
“Don’t shy away because of money issues,”advised Plummer, “You never know how great anopportunity you might miss out on.” Her opportunitycame in the form of scholarships through generouslocal donors who place a high value on service to theschool and the community at large — a hallmark ofCatholic schools.
Plummer had never attended a Catholic schooluntil she enrolled at Holy Spirit. She said she espe-cially appreciated her high school religion education.“It made an impact on me… put me in touch with myspirituality,” she said, adding that she valued the wayreligion was woven throughout the curriculum, notjust in religion class.
Plummer’s scholarship opportunity became HolySpirit’s gain as well. She was a four-year member ofthe track team, a football manager and cheerleader, amember of stage crew and participated in studentgovernment. Chosen for homecoming court, she alsobecame a Kairos retreat team leader.
“Ayanna contributed to everything. You couldalways count on her,” said Holy Spirit principalSusan Dennen. “She’s one of those students youalmost hate to see graduate because it leaves a hole. She valued every piece of what we offered — fromacademics, to spirituality and all the activities shewas involved in.”
Now a freshman at Stockton University, Plummerenvisions a career in the environmental science field— perhaps helping corporations ensure their policiesare environmentally conscious. As she considers pos-sible majors, she maintains the positive approach tolife that served her well in high school. “[You haveto] create your own experience, try new things, makeyour experience what you want it to be.”
The gap between
elementary school
tuition and the real
cost of education is
about $3,500 per
student.

South Jersey Catholic HighSchools offer open houses andacademic scholarship tests dur-
ing the official application period inthe fall of each year. But as long asthere are spots available, admission isrolling. Year round, schools acrossthe diocese receive questions aboutthe admission and enrollmentprocess.
Can my child enroll in anydiocesan high school?
Yes, your child may apply to any
diocesan high school. There are nogeographic restrictions.
Are the high schools openfor visits?
There are many ways to visit SouthJersey Catholic Schools. Each school’swebsite has information about openhouses, personal tours and other eventsdesigned to give prospective studentsand families an inside view.
What is the enrollment process?Outside the fall enrollment window,
admission to diocesan high schools isrolling. As classes fill, enrollment willclose. Each school’s website has com-plete application instructions anddates. The best way to find the rightschool is to schedule a visit — via thewebsite or by calling the school’s mainoffice. School administrators andadmission directors will be happy tomeet with you.
Is there any admission preference for studentswho already attend a
diocesan elementary/middleschool?
No. South Jersey Catholic highschools welcome all applicants.Students coming from public or othernon-Catholic schools will requesttranscripts and other records fromtheir current schools. At parents’request, records will be sent automati-cally from Catholic elementaryschools where students are alreadyenrolled. Otherwise, the applicationand review criteria are the same nomatter where a student is currentlyenrolled.
What is the tuition for aSouth Jersey Catholic HighSchool?
Tuition rates vary by school. Fordiocesan high schools, the currentrange is $9,000 to $10,000 per student. Many of our Catholic school familiesqualify for tuition assistance or schol-arships. If a family enrolls more thanone child, reduced tuition rates typical-ly apply. Payment plans and otherfinancing options may be available.
How will we know if wequalify for tuitionassistance?
Tuition assistance is determined bythe school to which your child isapplying. The FACTS online tuitionmanagement system is a startingpoint for determining eligibility, andyou are strongly encouraged to applyfor tuition assistance at the same timeyou apply for admission. Our princi-pals work with families to the extentpossible to help make our diocesanschools affordable and accessiblewith limited funds for assistance. Theearlier you complete the applicationprocess, the better your chances forbeing eligible to receive tuition assis-tance.
Are there additional feesbesides tuition?
Most schools separate tuition fromfees for expenses related to registra-tion, technology, graduation and cer-tain extra-curricular activities. Thisgives families a clear breakdown ofthe total cost. When you visit a schoolor a school website, you will be able toget up-to-date information abouttuition and fees.

No hayrestricciones geográficas.

Recomiendo Paul VI High Schooland Guardian Angels Regional School

As Colombians and Latinos, weprofess the Catholic religion. So one of my priorities when I
came to this beautiful country was tomake sure that my daughters couldcontinue to receive a quality educationlike they had in Bogotá, not only aca-demically but also with strong valuesand principles.
I believe that a good education is thebest inheritance parents can give totheir children. That is why I alwaysknew that I wanted to send my daugh-ters to a Catholic school. I considerthat all the financial efforts and thedaily sacrifices are worth it. Mydaughter Valentina is currently study-ing fashion design at the EuropeanDesign Institute. She has an impressivematurity. She knows what she wantsand focuses on achieving it. Above all,she has strong faith and spirituality, with a great sensitivity to injustices
and inequities toward the most vulner-able. Although being away from herrepresents an emotional sacrifice forthe family, without a doubt the fruitsof her invaluable Catholic education atPaul VI High School in Haddonfieldare reflected in her personal and pro-fessional growth and development.
My other daughter, Anna, is current-ly in seventh grade at Guardian AngelsCatholic School in Gibbstown, whereshe greatly enjoys her theater and artclasses. In addition, her entry in anational creative writing contest wasrecently selected for publication. Thecontest received 13,500 entries. I enjoy
watching her progress academically asshe learns from our faith and developsin her artistic abilities.
As a mother, I am proud of mydaughters. I am convinced that the bestdecision I have made in the UnitedStates was to send my daughters toCatholic school. In addition to itsCatholic principles and values, Paul VIHigh School has a wide range ofinvaluable art and design programs, with all kinds of audiovisual resourcesthat made a difference in Valentina'sfashion design career. GuardianAngels is an elementary school where, like Paul VI High School, academic
excellence, comprehensive educationand a friendly family environment arepriorities.
I recommend Paul VI High Schooland Guardian Angels Regional School,or any of our Catholic schools in theDiocese of Camden.

When it was time to enroll ourfirstborn for school, weexplored all available
options to ensure we made the bestdecision for our family academically, spiritually and socially. I rememberattending an open house and sittingwith the advancement director, whovery patiently answered my nearlyendless list of questions regarding testscores, high school placements, finan-cial security and enrollment.Ultimately it was less the answers tothose questions, but all the other intan-gibles that solidified our decision toenroll our children in Catholic school.
Our children have been at SaintMary’s in Williamstown for almost sixyears, and we are confident that aCatholic school education was andcontinues to be the right decision forour family. Saint Mary’s provides asafe, faith and family focused, support-ive, academically challenging environ-ment that reinforces and shares themorals and values we work to instill inour home.
It is impossible for us to imagine ourchildren learning in an environmentwhere they cannot openly pray andexpress their faith. Religion is not just
a class once per day at a Catholicschool. It is seamlessly woven in to theoverall experience from morningprayer to closing prayer.
I was visiting the school library oneday and started chatting with a teacher.
She asked if my husband had returnedfrom his work trip. I was puzzled, unsure how she knew he had beenaway. She explained that my sonseemed distracted in class one day andshe asked if there was anything he
wanted to talk about. He opened up toher that his dad is a lineman and leftthe night before on a storm trip and hedidn’t know when he would be able tocome home. The teacher led the classin prayer for a safe trip and quickreturn for my husband.
Imagining the support and love myson must have felt knowing his entireclass and teacher were praying for hisdad made my heart warm. Thesemoments of prayer and support, whichwould be absent in other learning envi-ronments, help to strengthen friend-ships and my son’s faith in God.
For our family it is clear that thevalue in a Catholic education and thelong lasting effects it will have on ourchildren outweigh any temporaryfinancial sacrifice we make. Livingmore of a minimalist lifestyle allowsus to provide our children the experi-ence of living and learning lessons incompassion, charity and community ina loving, supportive, Christ-centeredschool environment. Our childrenadore their school and those who fill it.From the smiling and dancing eighthgrade students who greet them in thecarline each morning, to the amazingnurse and everyone in between,Catholic schools are a family unlikeany other.

“When I’m here I get to see the world asit should be.” That is Ralph Pileggi’sperspective about Our Lady Star of
the Sea School (OLSS) in Atlantic City, where hehas worked for 24 years. A seventh grade teacher,Pileggi celebrates the diverse community that drawsfamilies from several countries of origin.
“I love it. I get to learn a lot in the classroom withso many different nationalities,” he said.
First grade teacher Mimi Lovallo agrees. “The stu-dents have a lot to share about their families andthings they do at home,” she said.
Latino students account for more than a third ofOLSS’ enrollment. The school has a significantAsian population as well. In Vineland, more than 50percent of students at Bishop Schad are from Latinofamilies — a reflection of the rapid growth in theU.S. Latino population.
The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that Latinos willcomprise 30 percent of the United States total popu-lation by 2050. Since most Latinos are Catholic, thegrowth in the church among Latinos is higher thanany other demographic group. According to theUSCCB, 8 million school age Latino children live inthe United States, yet just 4 percent are enrolled inCatholic schools.
Across the country, Catholic schools have realizedthe need to attract more Latino families who seek aneducation that merges faith and academics. Since2014, the Diocese of Camden has made a concertedeffort to reach out to Latino families. That effort hasresulted in an increase in Latino enrollment — from4 percent to 6 percent of students enrolled in dioce-san high schools, and from 12 percent to 18 percentof students enrolled in South Jersey Catholic elemen-tary schools — well above the national average. Inthe five Catholic Partnership Schools, those numbersare even higher, reflecting the demographics in andnear the city of Camden. As demographics continueto change outside the city, the enrollment shift isopening up new academic, cultural and faith opportu-nities for entire school communities.
Our Lady Star of the Sea is making groundbreak-ing gains with differentiated learning. Class may startwith a mini group lesson, and then students breakinto small groups and rotate through various learningstations — online, in small groups, working inde-pendently and meeting with their teacher.
Ongoing assessments give teachers a real-timeview of what each student has mastered and areasthat need refocusing. This personalized approach tolearning takes into account language barriers andlearning differences as well as advanced learningcapabilities. “Kids can’t believe how the afternoonflies,” said Pileggi. “When it’s time to change sta-tions they will say ‘already?’”
Lovallo and Pileggi said students are quick to helpeach other. When a new student from China enteredPileggi’s class, students made signs with words toput on different objects in the classroom — forexample, “door” and “cabinet.”
Cheryl DeVecchis at Saint Michael the Archangelin Clayton sees the same kindness in her kinder-garteners. “The kids are so loving … so welcoming,”she said, adding that students watch out for their twonew Latino classmates.
“If a [Latino student] doesn’t have the right colorcrayon out, [classmates] will go in the pouch and pullthe right color out,” she said. DeVecchis said the dif-
ference in her Latino students’ language skills is“night and day” since they arrived at the start of theschool year.
Students learn English quickly and subconsciously, while retaining their heritage language at home. It ismuch harder for parents, who tend to be more isolat-ed and whose language skills are already fully devel-oped. Teachers realize that it is harder for these par-ents to help their children with homework and proj-ects, which in turn can affect classroom performance.
Joe Williams, a fourth grade teacher at SaintMichael’s, pointed out that what might be perceivedas a learning issue could simply be a case of a childnot getting enough help at home.
Schools are finding ways to reach out to parentswho may know little or no English. At OLSS,Lovallo uses an online program that allows studentsto read in English and Spanish. They can share theSpanish version at home to engage in meaningful dis-cussions about schoolwork with their parents.
Teachers also celebrate the universal language offood. Many schools sponsor events that encouragefamilies to bring in dishes representative of theirhome countries.
“We’ve got [students] asking the Latino kids‘When’s your mom making the empanadas again?’And we’ve got Latinos looking for the eggrolls. There’s a lot of sharing going on,” said OLSS’Pileggi.
Bishop Schad teacher Veronica Glogau believes herschool community has particularly benefitted fromexpressions of devout faith evident in Latino families
and students. Other Bishop Schad teachers said theyare happy to see Latino families participating inschool functions — a sign that, despite some languagebarriers, families feel welcome and comfortable.
Most South Jersey Catholic elementary schoolshave madrinas or padrinos (meaning “godmother” or“godfather” in Spanish). School madrinas and padri-nos connect with and support Latino families. SaintMichael’s middle school teacher Sharon Fabriziorecalled with gratitude a time when madrina BrigidaLopez provided translation support to ease communi-cation with Latino parents.
“I think teachers feel very happy with my presenceat the school,” said Lopez, who is also a school par-ent and Spanish teacher at Saint Michael’s. “Theprincipal is always so appreciative of what I do,always encouraging me and the other Latino familiesto participate and implement new ideas, [to be] partof our school culture.”
Catholic Schools Week is a celebration of themany ways South Jersey Catholic schools educateand inspire young minds spiritually, academicallyand in service to others. Several schools haveplanned events to honor and share cultural traditionsin increasingly diverse communities. And there is apretty good chance some of those celebrations willinvolve empanadas and eggrolls.

“Me encanta.

Catholic schools lead in test scoresSouth Jersey Catholic elementary schools consistently outrank national averages
in reading and math in all grades. Our schools use the Iowa Assessments, a rigor-ous, nationally-normed test to evaluate student achievement and growth. Schoolsdo not “teach to the test.” Instead, our academic programs provide a strong foun-dation in core content and critical thinking to prepare students for success in highschool and beyond.
