What are the Common Core State Standards?
The Common Core State Standards set grade-by-gradelearning expectations for students in grades K-12 forMathematics and for English Language Arts and
Literacy.
While states have had standards for more than 15years, this set of standards is more focused on
preparing students for success in college and career. They set clear, consistentand high learning goals.

The Common Core State StandardsImportant Points
The goal of the CCSS: All students graduating from ourpublic school system as life-long learners with the skills and
knowledge necessary to assume their positions in the
global economy.
The CCSS are designed to be relevant in the real world, reflecting both the knowledge and skills students need for
success in both higher education and careers.
The CCSS are internationally benchmarked: informed by
curriculum and assessments from top-performing countries.

The Shifts in ELA/Literacy
1. Building knowledge through content-rich
nonfiction
2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded in
evidence from text, both literary and
informational
3. Regular practice with complex text and its
academic language

The Shifts in Mathematics
1. Focus: Focus strongly where the standards focus
2. Coherence: Thinkacross grades, and link to major
topics
3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual
understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and
application with equal intensity

How can you help your child in math?
-Help children practice their addition, subtraction, multiplicationand division facts.
-Encourage children not to give up while solving problems, tobuild stamina and develop their critical thinking skills. Dont give
them the answers - ask them to think of different ways they cansolve problems.
-Have children illustrate the math they were thinking in theirhead and discuss it out loud.
-Have children apply their math knowledge to a real-worldscenario at home, such as doubling a recipe or calculating thearea of a room.

A Note About 6-8 Math Program Changes
-The CCSS will bring about some changes to our math courses atthe middle school level.
-These changes will be phased in over the next several years and
include:
Accelerated math courses to begin in the 7th grade instead of 6th
grade. (This will start with the 2014-2015 school year.)
8thGrade Math will be the on grade level course. This course will
include many of the concepts from our current algebra course and
some of the concepts from our current geometry course.
-Meetings regarding our math program will be scheduled in the
Spring.
