The Economics of HappinessPremiere Film Screening - Friday, March 11, 2011 - 7:30 pm
Meinders School of Business Kerr McGee Auditorium, OCUNW 27th St. & McKinley AvenueA new film, The Economics of Happiness, says our spiritual satisfaction, our sense of secu-
rity, our joy, derive from our deep connections with others and our natural environment. It
also states globalization destroys security by undermining community, subordinating local con-
nections to the dictates of distant profits and creating dissatisfaction by replacing local cultures
with consumer culture. View the movie trailer online www.theeconomicsofhappiness.orgVicky Rose, daughter of Bernie and Joyce McNickle, has helped assemble an outstand-
ing panel to spark provocative conversation and dialogue following the film screening. Rev.
Chris Shorow will be part of the panel. Other invited panelist include a banker, a physician, a
sociologist and an expert on finance. This wide range of perspectives should ensure a lively
discussion. Each panelist will offer a brief comment on the film, leaving time for dialogue
among the panelists and Q&A from the audience.

As I write this article, it is Tuesday. But more popularly, it is
the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, or Mardi Gras. I know
New Orleans is preparing for a party, but so is the rest of
the world. I read about celebrations that are taking place all
overon a Tuesday!
The idea behind Mardi Gras is that we should partyhard before entering into that most somber of seasonsLent.
Eat, drink and be merryfor tomorrow we die. Is that what
this season is supposed to be about? Traditionally, Christians
were supposed to clear their shelves out of all the sweet good-
ies that would tempt them during this season, not just have an
excuse for a party. I think that preparation for Lent is still an important part of our lives, but
it speaks to deeper meaning for us.
First of all, our preparation is about the joy in our lives. We cant experience that joy
without recognizing the pain we experience. And we certainly cant experience joy without
disciplining ourselves. I tell my kids that they can celebrate their report cardsafter disci-
plining themselves to get their homework done throughout the year to have something to
celebrate.
The ancient Greeks had a philosophy called Epicureanism. Today the word has a littledifferent meaning than was originally intended. We think of epicureans as those who live
only for pleasure. And that was a part of the thinking. But true epicureans knew that to ex-
perience pleasure, there were several things they had to do to make sure the pleasure came
their way. Like work hard. Be a good friend and nurture those friendships. Take care of their
bodies. Many practical ideas like this were preached in epicurean circles and they felt that
this led to ultimate pleasure.
The same is true for us in our Christia
journey. To experience the joy of Jesus
Christ in our lives, we must discipline
ourselves to do the things that will help u
to see that joy. Like reaching out to other
Loving one anotherand even our en-
emies. And worshiping together in Christ
name. Hope to see you on Sunday as we
experience the joy and discipline of our
worship.

Lenten Bible Study andDevotions AvailableLent is a season of soul-searching and repen-
tance. It is a season for reflection. Lent origi-
nated in the very earliest days of the Church as
a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful
rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared
for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, we imitate Jesus withdrawal into the
wilderness for forty days.
The General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are inviting
all Disciples on a journey for the 40 Days of Lent. Two special opportunities to deepen
your faith and further understand the work and witness of our General Ministries have
been created.
You can sign-up to receive a daily Lenten devotion, story or prayer in your
email, beginning March 9! You can also download a Lenten Bible study written by Dr.
Richard Lowery. Log on to fccedmond.org/lentto sign up for the daily devotionalsor to download a PDF copy of the Bible study. Additional copies of the Bible study
available at the Welcome Center.
