Chapter 1The Human Body: An
Orientation
Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity
• Serous Membrane or Serosa– Double layered
membrane that covers the walls of the ventral body cavity and outer surface of the organs
– Parietal serosa and visceral serosa
Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity
• Parietal serosa– The outer layer of the
serous membrane that lines the cavity walls
Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity
• Visceral Serosa– The inner layer of the
serosa that covers the organs of the ventral body cavity
Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity
• Serous fluid– Separates the serous
membrane– Thin layer of lubricating
fluid
Regions
• Umbilical Region– Centermost region– Surrounding the navel
Regions
• Epigastric Region– Superior to the umbilical
region– Epi = upon, above– Gastri = belly
Regions• Hypogastric (pubic)
Region– Located below the
umbilical region– Hypo = below
Regions
• Right and Left Iliac (Inguinal) Regions– Located lateral to the
hypogastric region – Iliac = superior part of
the hip bone
Regions
• Right and Left Hypochondriac Region– Flank the epigastric
region laterally– Chondro = cartilage
