CHILD LIFE INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONPeyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 1. Bachelors Degree or last semester of Senior Year
2. 3.0 grade point average
3. 150 combined hours of volunteer experience with children; 75 of these hours must be
in a healthcare setting. (50% of these hours must be completed by the application deadline, and all must be completed by the start of the internship). Student must provide documentation of all volunteer hours.

INTERNSHIP INCLUDES:
1 . Three clinical rotations in various pediatric units
2. Formal written case study to be presented to Child Life staff
3. Final project of your choice, which also requires an oral presentation
4. Site Visits – you will be given an opportunity to visit other facilities to learn about other Child Life programs and alternative Child Life settings
5. Daily journal entries
6. Small projects that will be assigned by individual preceptors

Goals and Objectives for Internship
1. To become familiar with the Child Life profession,
along with Child Life programs at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent.
2. To gain an understanding of the impact of
hospitalization on the emotional and developmental needs of children.
3. To have the opportunity to interact with patients on a one-to-one basis and in group situations.
4. To provide an accepting, non-threatening environment to promote healthy interactions
between child, staff, and family.
5. To become acquainted with the needs of hospitalized children and to recognize creative and
6. To be an advocate and spokesperson for children and families in their interaction with the health care system.
7. To prepare children for surgery and other medical experiences through the use of books,
photo albums, dolls, medical equipment, and play.
8. To gain a basic and practical working knowledge of medical procedures and terminology.
9. To develop an understanding of other disciplines working with Child Life in a hospital setting.
10. To strengthen ability to interact and relate to other professional and departmental members.
11. To develop an understanding of team effort in effecting positive experiences for hospitalized children.
12. To evaluate oneself under the guidance of experienced professionals, and to be measured by professional standards.
13. To begin transition from student to professional.
14. To gain professional attitude, growth, maturity, and judgment.

ESSAY: Please write an essay stating why you would like an internship at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital
at St.Vincent. This can include what you hope to accomplish; what expertise you will bring; and your long
term goals.

______ REFERENCE LETTERS: We require three letters of reference. One needs to be from a college supervisor
or professor; and the other two should be from people who have observed your work with children. Please
have the letters sent in sealed envelopes.
______ CPR CERTIFICATION:
______ ADVISOR’S PLAN FOR COMMUNICATION: If you are a last semester senior, include a letter from
your supervisor stating the requirements of your internship, as well as information on how communication
between the hospital and school will take place. If your university has evaluation forms that need to be completed
after the internship, please include copies of them.
______ HEALTH INSURANCE: Proof of health insurance will be required upon start of internship.
