Weir Wood Sailing Club - Information about our club 2016
Children 8-15
Optimist Club
Oppy Club is for children aged 8-15 and runs on
Saturday afternoons from 1.30pm (rigged and
ready to sail) to approximately 5pm. It is run by
qualified coaches, instructors and other parents.
The sessions offer children the opportunity to sail
and develop their skills to a high level of racing
competence, in a friendly, safe and supportive
environment.
Weir Wood has an active Optimist fleet with boats
sailing every Saturday afternoon during the
season which runs from March to November with
winter training sessions for the keener sailors.
The children in the group have a lot of fun and
make good friends on and off the water.
Beginners Sessions
We also run sessions for members’ and non-
members’ children to learn the basics of Optimist
sailing. Sessions are run by RYA instructors and
include use of club boats, buoyancy aids and
safety helmets. These are available subject to
availability through the club booking site –
Members £15 per session, non-members £20 per
session.

Adult training courses
Weir Wood Sailing Club is a recognised RYA
Training Establishment. Training courses range
from those tailored for complete beginners
through to courses in advanced sailing tech-
niques for those wishing to improve and hone
their sailing skills. So, if you have never sailed
before, why not enrol on one of our ‘Start Sailing’
courses? It could change your life! Or, if you
have sailed before but need a ‘refresher’, our
‘Basic Skills’ course will get you back up to
speed. We also offer First Aid and Powerboat
courses (Basic Skills and the Safety Boat
Course) for members who wish to support sail-
ing.
Courses last two days and cost £115 for mem-
bers and £155 for non-members, including £40
temporary membership fee. If you join the club
in the same year we’ll waive the £50 joining fee.
We also run 2 residential weekends at Cobnor

Saturday Skills
If formal courses aren’t your thing, but you
would like to improve your sailing skills with an
instructor on hand, why not try one of our Sat-
urday Skills groups? Initially conceived to pro-
vide structured sailing practice between cours-
es, these sessions have also proved very suc-
cessful with members not wishing to undertake
formal courses. Each session costs £5 with
your own boat or £20 if you hire a club boat.
Taster Sessions
New for 2016 – we’re offering taster sessions
for people who’ve never tried dinghy sailing
before or who sailed long ago and would like to
start again – so you can see if you like it before
committing yourself to a course or to member-
ship.
