1ST XV SLUMP CONTINUES
CLUB XV DEFEAT OLD STREET IN ENTERTAINING MATCH
Welcome to Chiswick RFC Times issue 26.
This week we have match reports from the 2 matches played last weekend as well as league results and round ups and a photo special from the 1
st XV match at Hemel Hempstead RFC.
This Saturday the 1
st XV play in the League versus Harpenden RFC in a match that they just cannot afford to lose if they want
to match last season’s 3rd
place finish or better it. The loss at Hemel has made 2nd
place very hard to achieve but not impossible it just requires the 1
st XV to win every remaining match and ideally by the full five league points available.
For information on Harpenden RFC please visit: www.hrfc.com
The 2
nd XV have a massive game on the main pitch at home against Rosslyn Park IV, the result will decide who plays whom in
the semi finals of MMT 1, please come and show your support if you are not watching the 1st XV at Harpenden.
Information on Rosslyn Park IV can be found at: www.rosslynpark.co.uk The Stags have a MASSIVE MMT 6 quarter final match against Northolt RFC at home this Saturday, the Stags are in their first season and the quarter final is a big achievement but rookie skipper Kelvin Campbell hopes the side can go further as if they lose this Saturday then the Stags season and some careers could be over (Due to age not Kelvin’s wrath) Information on Northolt RFC can be found at: www.pitchero.com/clubs/northolt

CHISWICK STIFLED BY LIVELY HEMEL HEMEL HEMPSTEAD RFC 32 CHISWICK RFC 15
REPORT BY DAVID LOVELL
On a spring-like day, which should have suited them, Chiswick were worn down, and finally out-played by a lively Hemel team, who kept their foot on the gas for seventy five minutes. Chiswick started as if to exact revenge for their one point home defeat by Hemel. Sam Hood, Jon Joyce and Rikki Darroch were all involved in an attack which ended with a successful penalty kick by Keith Luckman, after Sam Biss had got close to the line. Chiswick had first tried a quick tap, and Darroch had gone over the line, only for the referee to call them back.
Joyce did well to hang on to the restart kick under a three-man assault, and Luckman then did well to eschew a kick in favour of setting Josh Noble free in some space. Noble made mincemeat of the nearest Hemel men, and then chipped neatly over the others. The ball did not bounce kindly for him, but went straight into the hands of hooker Biss on the follow-up, and he zoomed in under the posts, giving Luckman an easier kick than the first. 10-0 after 4 minutes. Chiswick kept attacking, but had their first set-back when losing their own lineout, where Hood was, most unusually, beaten to the ( accurate ) throw by the excellent Hemel No.8. Their second, more serious setback occurred after a scintillating run by captain John Gibson, who released Adie Lewis on a run to the left corner. As Lewis plunged over for the try, the referee, claiming, apparently that he wasn’t quite sure about it, as the corner flag had been hit by something at about the same time, disallowed it.
Chiswick lost a bit more momentum when Luckman just failed with a kick after a high tackle brought an attack to a halt well into the home 22. The Hemel back row were increasingly successful in their attempts to disrupt the flow of balls from the Chiswick scrums, and then Chiswick were lucky that an unspotted forward pass did not bring greater reward for the home team. Luckily, Gibson was on hand to sort things out. Hemel then gained a penalty, and mauled well from the ensuing lineout. A player broke from the maul and raced for the corner. He dived over, apparently touching down on the sideline ( your reporter was very close ). The referee, a little further away, saw no reason, on this occasion, not to award the try. The kick failed. Hemel threw away a good chance, being penalised for feeding, on a rare excursion into the Chiswick 22. However, they produced another good maul which led to another unconverted try just before the interval. Right on the whistle, Lowe gave Lewis a pass near the line, but his grubber kick went astray and the chance had gone.
Chiswick were under pressure from the kick-off, as Hemel stormed downfield and downwind, and a knock-on, followed by an inability to stop a run by the Hemel No.5, led to a converted try by the home team. Jon Joyce had to retire injured, and then an injury to Gibson led to a reorganisation of the Chiswick backs. With the forced changes, and a couple of other niggles being just about coped with, the ball was very much in the home court. They had a successful penalty kick, and kept up the pressure with good long touch kicks. Some ineffectual tackling allowed the lively Hemel left winger to get an inside pass away as he was driven into touch, and that was another home try, which was well converted. The next home attack led to their winger apparently hitting the flag as he went over the try line, and the referee did not award a try. Luckman, no doubt still smarting from last week’s charge down, then produced an excellent drop-out, caught cleanly by sub Brinley Price, who combined well with sub Ben Catliff before a forward pass halted the move. Chiswick’s handling got more urgent, but a spate of injuries didn’t help the minor revival. A knock-on gave Hemel a good field position, which they exploited with some careful passing, their No.12 finally scoring near the corner, the kick failing. With Chiswick finally reduced by injuries to fourteen, they produced their best move of the match, with Lewis, Darroch, Lowe, Luckman, Noble, Price, and Rory Fletcher all handling well before Tom Adams put Noble clear down the right wing, to cut inside the last defender to score. Luckman’s kick hit the post. Chiswick team :- Donaldson, Biss, Joubert ( Carroll ), Hood, Joyce ( Price ), Adams, Darroch, Fletcher, Lowe, Luckman, Lewis, Gibson ( Catliff ), Noble, Small, Perfect

CLUB XV SHOW SKILLS TO OVERCOME OLD STREET CHISWICK CLUB XV 31 OLD STREETONIANS CLUB XV 26
REPORT BY SIMON “BIG CHIEF”BARTLEY
With Chiswick needing to keep momentum going in the Merit Table, the Chiswick Club side pulled off a hard fought victory which should have come much easier. Old Streetonians who hosted us at the start of the season came for the return leg of friendliest, unfortunately a few players short so Olli Vivian and Pat Sloane stepped up and played for the opposition allowing for a very competitive game. Streets opened the scoring thanks to some sloppy defence from Chiswick; this was however closely followed by a Chiswick try through a well worked backs move allowing Greg Talbot to cross the line. The rest of the first half was very much back and forth between the two 22's to leave the score at five all at half time. The second half was a higher scoring 40 minutes of rugby. Steve Davis opened the Chiswick second half scoring followed by two converted from Streets. Dave Thornton then crossed the line with a 40 metre run to finish under the posts allowing him to convert his own try. Chiswick’s fourth try came from a break down the wing from James Edgson, again coming around and under the post which gave Thornton his second conversion of the afternoon. Streets final score came with about 20 minutes left on the clock, but it was Chiswick who sealed a hard fought and close match with a try from Scrum Half Andy Higgins which was again converted by Dave Thornton who was declared man of the match. This season is rapidly drawing to close gentlemen and we are getting to the business end, all three sides in Merit Table are headed for playoffs, with the stags starting their campaign for the final first with a quarter final match. The Chiefs are in a playoff position but the ideal would be a home playoff like last season. So the next two merit table games are vital in getting us that home advantage, the next two games are where the Chiefs step up to the mark and take two big scalps on the way to the final. The way in which we finish our season is up to us now. We can step up the mark and play for each other and progress further, or we don’t and we fail. There have been weeks where we have found it easy to field four competitive sides and others where we have struggled. In our first season with four sides we have done amazingly well, there are other clubs around us who are struggling and even folding sides so for us to be expanding is nothing short of amazing and its all down to you guys the players. So in these last few weeks it down to all of us to keep that momentum going and push Chiswick RFC further.
