CHRIST CHURCH DUANESBURG NEW YORK
RECTOR’S REFLECTIONS
ext time you have a quiet
moment in church, pick up
the hymnal and look up one of
your favorite hymns. Then say it
softly. You will discover that while
some of our hymns have truly fine
poetry, without music it is clear
that something is missing. Once
we combine the poetry with the
music, then few remain
unmoved. Not only do some
great hymns have the ability to
stir something deep within our
souls, they even have the ability
to change the world.
This month I invite you to join
me in our parish hall on October
13th and 20th to explore 9 great
hymns and to learn the history
from which they emerged and
the stories of those who wrote
them. I will add some comments
of my own and (If we have
enough singers) we will sing some
of these great hymns.
On Monday, October 13th we
will travel to Ireland with Patrick
(Be Thou My Vision), to the
monastic community of Bernard
of Clairvaux (O Sacred Hear Now
Wounded), journey with
mendicant preacher Francis (All
Creatures of Our God And
King),and finally come to the
Reformation with Luther (A Mighty
Fortress is our God.)
On Monday, October 20th the
amazing stories of deep faith that
gave us five hymns that changed
the world: Amazing Grace, It is
Well With My Soul, What A Friend
We Have In Jesus, Silent Night,
and How Great Thou Art. The
hymns are performed by soloists
and choruses. Silent Night
features the Vienna Boys’ Choir.
Each session will begin at 6:30
PM and end between 8:00 and
8:30. Come, join us, and let the
music fill your soul.

VIEW FROM THE PEW The Bad, the Good and the Beautiful
hether you realize it or not, you cannot
spell DEVIL without EVIL
Thanks be to God, we also cannot spell
JESUS without US. Thank God also that Jesus
died, resurrected and ascended into Heaven for
all of US. Also by the Grace of God our sins are
forgiven us, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Jesus was tempted by the (evil) Devil and He
resisted all those temptations. We, as Christians,
must also do likewise. There is sorrow, hatred,
violence and turmoil in this world of ours. We
must let go of all our anxieties and learn to live in
God’s love. His love is good and greater than
evil and we are truly blessed to receive this gift
of love. The love of God will challenge us to
help change this world.
Love, compassion and understanding will
always overcome hate and with the love of God
we can find freedom and peace. Transcend
the darkness of hate and come alive in the light
of the unsurpassing love of God and Jesus Christ.
Share the gift of the strength and power of this
love with others you meet in your lifetime. We
may not be perfect, but we can do the very
best that we are capable of doing. Remember,
God loves us just as we are, warts and all!
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding
abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us. Unto
him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus
throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
(KJV) Ephesians 3:20-21
When you find that unbounded love of God
and His peace, you will also become aware of
the beautiful world He created. There is joy in
the perfection of all around you and you are
truly blessed to be able to see this breathless,
undeniable beauty, to live in it, and to share it
with others.
Resist the Bad, be thankful for the Good and
enjoy the Beautiful.
You are all always in my prayers.
In His love and Peace,
Doris J. Weiler

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS And What a Blessing it Was! By: Deacon Debbie
n September 27th, we had Blessing of the
Animals at the Hannaford in Esperance for
the second year. The thought behind moving it
from Christ Church to the Hannaford is that more
people from the community would attend. Last
year, the attendance was limited to our parish
family with one exception if my memory serves
me correctly. This year we had 6 dogs come for
a blessing that did not belong to Christ Church
families! One gentleman said they were driving
by and his wife told him to turn around as they
had their dog, Rocky, in the car! Altogether, we
blessed 22 of God’s creatures, including one in
absentia, as fish are a little difficulty to transport!
There were 2 horses, 2 cats, 1 fish and 17 dogs!
The weather was quite warm but it was a
beautiful and blessed day for Christ Church and
the community to which it belongs!
