CHRISTA MCAULIFFE MIDDLE SCHOOL ROLLS OUT “LEADER IN ME” PROGRAM
Christa McAuliffe Middle School rolled out their “Leader in Me” program which will develop a culture of leadership in the school based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. At the end of the last school year CMMS was chosen to receive a $75,000 grant from the “I Am a Leader Foundation” to implement the new school-wide leadership program. This school year will be the first year of a three year rollout process. The “Leader in Me” process involves students and staff infusing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen Covey into their lives and lessons. The Habits are based on 20 years of leadership, character, and life skills training. The common “language” will become part of the school’s culture and will continue to produce positive results year after year. The Leader in Me model emphasizes skills that parents, teachers, and business leaders want and that students need to be successful in an ever changing society:
Leadership / Responsibility / Accountability / Problem Solving / Communication
Initiative / Self-direction / Creativity / Teamwork / Cross-cultural Skills
The staff voluntarily returned early to school in August for several days of in-depth training on how to implement this program. Christa McAuliffe Middle School now has a Lighthouse Team consisting of staff members from different areas of the school. At their first staff meeting the Lighthouse Team rolled out the “Leader in Me” program with a “Hollywood Theme”. Staff were treated with popcorn, had their pictures taken on a green screen, and walked the “red” carpet leading into the staff meeting. Presentations were then given to announce team leaders to head up the essential “Leader in Me” departments. Some staff members were even surprised by finding “Golden Tickets” that were redeemed for “Million Dollar Chocolate Bars”. Staff members are very excited about the implementation of the Leader in Me program in the school this year. They have even created a new mission statement for Christa McAuliffe Middle School:

Fun in the Lunchroom
Our lunchrooms over the past few months were an exciting place to be thanks to our dedicated food service staff. First, during the week of October 12th through
the 16th, National School Lunch Week was celebrated. This year’s theme was “School Lunch Snapshot”, where fun activities were planned along with surprise
giveaways. On October 16th, we celebrated Pink Out with a “Tailgate Free Lunch For All Day”. The students in the elementary buildings had the opportunity to
have lunch with their favorite John Glenn Varsity football players and cheerleaders. Prizes were handed out along with a lot of autographs by our Varsity players.
Then, on November 19th we celebrated Thanksgiving with huge Thanksgiving buffets in all our schools. The food service staff worked long hours to serve their
students everything from turkey to pumpkin pie. They enjoy doing this every year because of how much the students appreciate it and look forward to these
wonderful meals. We would like to take this opportunity to give a huge “Shout Out” to our food service department.
The Bangor Township Firefighters visited Central, Lincoln, West and North Preschool during Fire Safety Week in October. Firefighters visited
each classroom where students learned how to keep themselves and their families safe in the event of a fire. Students were guided through the fire
safety house by our local firefighters, which targets preventing dangerous home situations and simulates a home fire situation. All students were
encouraged to practice fire safety drills at home and remind parents/guardians to check their smoke detectors. Thank you to the Bangor Township
Fire Department for your dedication and commitment to keeping our students safe!

Minecraft Club Once again our Minecraft Club was a huge success thanks to the help of 6th
graders Jenna Seward and Shawn Ford, who assisted in getting Minecraft up
and running. Classes were held every Tuesday from October 13th until
November 17th, and everyone had a great time. Minecraft Club is one of our
free programs sponsored by Bobcat Recreation. It is offered after school
from 3:30pm to 4:30pm at Bangor West and is open to anyone at least 10
years old. It will run again for 6 weeks beginning Tuesday, January 12th and
ending Tuesday, February 16th. Space is extremely limited due to computer
availability and the program will fill up fast. Once the spaces fill, registration will

John Glenn’s 1st Annual Women’s Basketball Alumni Game
To celebrate the 40th year of the girls’ basketball program, John Glenn hosted its 1st annual women’s basketball alumni game. Participants from all
across the state came home to play in this fun-filled event that was held on Saturday, November 28th at 7 PM. The game hosted 35 alumni ranging in
graduation years from 1983-2014. There were even two mother-daughter combinations on opposite teams. Katie Johnson (2014) and Laurie Johnson
(1983) and Kristen Tobin (2013) and Debbie Tobin (1984) battled back and forth all night. In attendance were families, friends, supporters of the
program, and former coaches. Also included in the evening was a 50/50 raffle and throwback uniform sale, which was used as a fundraiser for the
girls’ basketball program. It was an awesome evening filled with Bobcat pride.

HOMECOMING RECAP By: Holly English and Hallie Ruegsegger Countless hours went in to the planning and preparation of John Glenn’s Homecoming. The
game this year was on October 2nd, and also celebrated 50 years of John Glenn Football.
John Glenn took the win against Muskegon Heights.
Each year in the week leading up to the game, grades compete against one another for
school spirit, participation in homecoming events, and in raising money for local and state
charities. The entire school is decked out in class and school colors during this week. The
theme chosen for John Glenn’s Homecoming was
cities around the world. Starting with the freshman,
the cities were: Cancun, New Orleans, Beijing, and
Paris.
The competition between the grades was close this
year, each grade vying for the jug that boasts
winning classes’ years. The week ended with a pep
assembly that announced the senior Class of 2016
as the winners.
The King and his court were announced the
weekend before the homecoming game at the girl’s
powderpuff game. Adam Wolschied was crowned
King, With Spencer Hardy as first runner up and
Logan Reder as second runner up. The Queen and
her court were announced during halftime of the
homecoming game. Alisha Lodewyk was crowned
Queen, Riley Cunningham was first runner up, and
Wendy Pham was second runner up.

The students at John Glenn High School proved how
much can be accomplished when you work hard to give
back. During the month of November, students
participated in a food drive. The whole thing was
constructed and ran by the students. It was a competition
between first hour classes with the winning class
receiving a bagel party courtesy of John Glenn Student
Senate. Students in every grade participated and the
turnout was incredible. As a student body, a total of 1,984
nonperishable food items were raised and donated to
Hidden Harvest. Mrs. Makar’s first hour class came out on
top and averaged 30
food items a person. The
food drive was an
overall success and it
was a great way for
students to give back.

Members of SLS (Students
Leading Students) at John Glenn High School had an opportunity to attend a
leadership conference at Shanty Creek Resort, November 7-8. All schools
decorated their doors to represent their schools. Students attended different
workshops where they learned about driving simulators, project funding, dangers
of distracted driving, STOP, and much more. Each student attended four different
workshops. Trooper Mark Kellar was the keynote speaker. On Saturday evening,
there was an advisor dinner where everyone had to dress up. All schools gave a
speech about their advisors. After the dinner, there was a Glow-in-the-Dark dance
where all schools came together to have fun and meet new friends. On Sunday,
there was a memorial service where students heard about people who had passed
away in each school. At the end of the conference there was an award ceremony
where the JGHS SLS group was presented a stuffed dog named Happy for being
the most outgoing and energetic school.

On November 5, 2015, students were inducted into the
Michael L. Wemple Chapter of the National Honor
Society. These accomplished juniors and seniors have a
minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and
20+ hours of community service. Students were also
evaluated on the four pillars of National Honor Society:
Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. These
dedicated students worked hard to achieve such high
standards. Fourteen seniors and forty-two juniors were
recognized for their commitment and inducted into John
Glenn’s National Honor Society.

MARCHING BAND SHOWCASE By: Cally Quale, Multimedia Arts Student/Band Member The Showcase, simply referred to as “Midland” by most, is where
all the bands in the area come together to showcase their talent.
Each band has their own theme that the directors choose, and they
have 15 minutes to perform their halftime show to an audience of
well over a thousand fellow band members, parents, community
members, and a panel of judges. This year, John Glenn’s theme was
“Then and Now” playing a collection of Bruno Mars’s “Locked Out
of Heaven”, Ozzy Osborn’s “Crazy Train”, and Fun’s “We Are
Young”. “Marching band season is always a good time”, said senior
Marilyn Ziehmer. “From camp to the last game, which is
always emotional; I love it.”

Copies of the minutes shall also be available at the reasonable estimated cost for printing or copying. Upon oral or written request for a subscription and payment of a fee established by the Board, minutes shall be mailed to any person or business by first class mail. The subscription may be valid for up to six months.

Our first Bangor Central running program, Run 4 Fun, was a huge success. We had a total of 59 first—fifth graders who participated.
They learned running techniques and healthy nutrition. Thank you to our teachers, Mrs. Badour, Mrs. Beythan, and Mrs. Knoll for all
your hard work, drive, and dedication in making this program a success. We are looking forward to the spring session.

the top of City Hall. They had a great view of

Bangor Lincoln hosted their first Family Science and Engineering Night on Thursday, November 12th.
Students and their families explored activities that centered on Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics. It was a fun night -- filled with creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Thank

Grandparents and special people were invited to
our school for our annual Grandparent’s/Special
Person’s Day during the week of November 16th.
Students and their guests worked together to
make a Thanksgiving project and enjoyed cookies
and lemonade afterwards. Thank you to all of our

Wildlife Safari Comes to Bangor Lincoln
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have the opportunity to be part of a
walking club during recess. Every time a student walks around the walking track they get
their mileage marker stamped by a noon aide. For each 20 laps walked, students are
rewarded with a toe token and a number token to be placed on their shoe certificate
which keeps track of their total laps. There is a special recognition for students at our
Team Rally to celebrate the students who
have walked 100 laps. Congratulations to the following students who have already walked
100 laps: Emily Shook, Jacklyn Schafer, Kiara Peters, Addison Alexander, Ryan Baumer,
Mason Clements, Isaiah Struck, and Emily Price.
Walking Club at Lincoln
On Tuesday, November 24, the Wildlife Safari spent the whole day with
students at Bangor Lincoln Elementary School. Students were able to go
on an expedition around the world without having to leave the building.
They had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some amazing
animals, like a toucan, sugar gliders, lynx, alligator, python, and an
armadillo. Students learned about important wildlife topics such as
threatened and endangered species, habitat destruction, and animal
diversity. Did you know that the armadillo can stay in its shell for as
much time as needed? Thank you to the Wildlife Safari for making this a
great experience for our students!

Students in Mrs. Arnold’s 1st grade class had a blast
studying animal classifications and their habitats at
the Bay City State Park
Recreation Area in October.
Students also got to eat
lunch there and enjoy some
time at Play by the Bay.
The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program is off to a
great start at West! We held our kick-off event before
Thanksgiving break and had a wonderful turnout. Students and
dads enjoyed pizza together and were able to sign up for their
volunteer days. During
that one evening event,
we were able to book
every Monday,
Wednesday, and
Friday for the
entire school year! Our
students are already
so excited to see the
Watch D.O.G.S.
throughout the
building as they are
awesome role models
to learn from. A huge thank you to all of the dads that have made
this first year a big success so far!
In November, Bangor West fourth graders ventured to the Bay
Arenac Career Center to tour the facilities. The boys and girls
discovered so much about future learning opportunities. The
Career Center staff and students provided a fun, hands-on
learning experience for our nine and ten year olds who learned
about auto mechanics, culinary arts, nursing, building trades,
and so much more. A great time was had by all!!

Every Friday, Miss Nelson’s fourth grade class
partners up with Mrs. Arnold’s first grade to
work on special projects. The boys and girls
have particularly enjoyed tackling challenging
math tasks together and writing letters to
veterans in honor of Veterans’ Day. Learning
can be a lot of fun at Bangor West when you
work together.

Our Study of Force and Motion
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
On December 11th, our kindergartners participated in a hands
-on activity involving rockets! Demonstrations to help
understand force and motion took place as well as an
introduction to several scientists, who have impacted our
lives.
Our engineers were given a mission to create one working space rocket that would successfully launch with a stomp of the foot. Our destination was the moon! Final preparations and engine and fuel checks took place prior to launching. Our engineers/astronauts returned to their work stations and prepared for the gathering at the “Launch Station”. The captain at Mission Control initiated the launch sequence! “All Systems go! Lift off in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 booster ignition and ……blast off!”
Paws on the Path
In late October, Bangor West students hit the walking/running
track to get some exercise in a mileage club called Paws on the
Path. Students walk or run during their lunch hour and are
putting in several miles a day. After students eat lunch they go
out to the track where they pick up four sticks. Every time the
students make a lap they drop off a stick and continue walking
until all the sticks have been dropped off. Every four laps is one
half mile and most students are getting in one mile at lunch time
which means eight laps! You go kids! Students get a punch on
their Mileage Punch Card and can keep track of their miles using
this card. Bangor West will be keeping track of the school
mileage to see how far each class has traveled. The school’s goal
is to run or walk in the St. Patrick’s Day race here in Bay City.
The students are enjoying using the track and are walking or
running just for the health of it.
