“Recapture the Dream”
A Dream Come True!
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 28, 2012
From the Pastor October 28, 2012
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Jesus asked the blind man, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ The blind man replied to him, ‘Master, I want to see.’ Jesus told him, ‘Go your way; your faith has saved you.’ Immediately he
received his sight and followed him on the way’” [Cf. Mark 10:51-52]
To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, I’m giving a weekly reflection on the three theological deep and beautiful Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts.
30th
Sunday in Ordinary Time - Collect
Almighty ever-living God, increase our faith, hope and charity,
and make us love what you command, so that we may merit what you promise.
Faith, Hope & Charity. As St. Paul wrote: “Faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” [1 Corinthians 13:13] We call these the ‘theological’ virtues since we cannot obtain them by mere human effort; they are gifts from God which lead us to God. They are the steps to heaven [see ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ in Genesis 10:28-22] that set us in ‘right relationship’ with God. The four ‘cardinal’ virtues: temperance, justice, prudence, fortitude are the hinges [in Latin, ‘cardo’ means
‘hinge’] upon which our moral life must ‘swing.’ Many, if not most societies - even atheistic ones - can and do ascribe to the ‘cardinal’ virtues, since they are obvious by use of our human reasoning. But how do we obtain what only God can provide: the ‘theological’ virtues?
Faith, hope and love are bestowed on us at our Baptism and nourished by the Eucharist. Each time we ‘exercise’ our faith, we grow in hope and love; so a healthy prayer life, enhanced by regularly celebrating the sacraments, enables us to see that God’s plan is not only good for us, it is BEST for us! And even better yet, we know that as the Holy Spirit works in and through us, our main goal is not to be successful, but to be faithful, hopeful and filled with love! So as Saint Augustine said: “Love, and do what you will.”
30th
Sunday in Ordinary Time – Prayer over the Offerings
Look, we pray, O Lord, on the offerings we make to your majesty, that whatever is done by us in your service
may be directed above all to your glory.
Are We Properly Oriented? To be ‘properly oriented’ literally means to face east, toward the Orient! In secular lingo that means looking toward the rising sun, the new day, a new beginning. Biblical prophecies direct us to look east, for just as the Wise Men saw the sign of His coming, the Star, rising in the East, we will see the sign of Christ return in the Eastern sky. That’s why churches once had to be so constructed that during the Eucharistic Prayer, both Priest and People faced the East. [Contrary to the naysayers who saw it as the Priest turning his back on the People, both faced the same way, as do pilots and their passengers, as courageous generals lead their armies, and as shepherds walk before their flock.]
In this Prayer over the Offerings we pledge to direct all we do to God’s glory or to ‘orient’ all our words and deeds towards God’s glory. And the best way to do this is to make sure all we say and do advances God’s plan, and activates God’s call, and fulfills God’s will. If this is not the case, we may be spiritually disoriented!
30th
Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion
May your Sacraments, O Lord, we pray, perfect in us what lies within them,
that what we now celebrate in signs we may one day possess in truth.
Flawed, But Salvageable. Radical Protestantism
sees the world as so far beyond hope it has no redeeming qualities, and is only ‘saved’ when God looks through it to see Christ. Catholicism sees the world as fundamentally flawed, but basically good; why else would God become man and live in it? Yet Catholics also recognize that the world needs something only God can supply: the Way, the Truth and the Life!
Some get so caught up in the beauty of this world they fail to see the Creator within it; but do we get so caught up in the signs and symbols of the sacraments that we fail to see Jesus’ presence within them? As this oration reminds
us, we will not see it clearly until we possess it in the truth of heaven, but if we look more closely now - and use what is right before us, we can make our life and our world a better place!
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

YEAR OF FAITH
"World without end - the end times"
A morning of reflection for the Year of
Faith on November 17, 2012. Join us for
morning mass at 8:30 a.m., reflection,
discussion and an opportunity for
Reconciliation.
ARE YOU PRAYING OR SAYING A PRAYER?
The Year of Faith is an opportunity for us to rediscover the
practical ways to enliven our faith. Prayer is one of the tools to
encounter a personal God in Jesus. St. Therese of Lisiuex said,
“Prayer is a lifting up of our minds and hearts to God.” In a
prayerful reading of the Sacred Scripture we truly encounter a
personal God when we have a dialogue with those words we
read. Let the “4 P’s” guide you in encountering Christ.
Passage: Take a passage from the Bible or it may be the reading
for the day or the following Sunday. Read the passage and let it
speak to you. Imagine yourself as one of the characters in the
scenario.
Place: Choose a comfortable place. It could be in your office
during the break time, in a park, in the chapel/church or even in
your room. Choose a place in which you are able to relate with
the passage you are reading.
Position: The posture of your body will help you to relax and to
be receptive in hearing the words which speak to you during your
reading. You may kneel or sit comfortably. Remember Jesus
reclined at the table and instituted the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Passage: When you are reading the passage, there will be some
words which will speak to you. Keep your focus and be attentive
to your feelings, thoughts and desires. You speak to God through
them. When distracted go back to the passage and keep talking
to God in the silence of your heart.
This is just a guide. For the first time when you do these steps,it might be difficult but with perseverance like Bartimaeus intoday’s Gospel, Jesus will give you what you need. Rememberto be always grateful to God by saying a Thanksgiving prayer. The prayer for the Year of Faith is helpful or you can recite basicCatholic Prayers (Hail Mary, Our Father, Gloria Patri) and endit with a sign of the cross on yourself. In this way you arePraying, not just saying a prayer!

Pastor’s Update – October 28, 2012
Election Day Eucharistic Adoration. On November 6,
the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed on the DAILY
MASS CHAPEL Altar from the end of the 8:30 AM Mass
until Evening Prayer at 8 PM. All are invited, requested,
strongly encouraged to make a visit to pray before voting.
Many issues will be determined by our choice: Supreme
Court justices, laws and policies that will affect the life of
the unborn, the sick and dying, poor and needy, illegal
aliens, the unemployed and underemployed, those who
rightly and honestly rely on benefits they paid into and
deserve, and those who abuse the system and demand
to be cared for without offering anything in return, etc.
Without God’s help, we could never do the right thing that
will bring peace and justice, prosperity and security,
ethical values and biblical truths to our beloved United
States of America. So pray – and vote!
A sign-up sheet may be found in the chapel and narthex;
there are 5 lines for each of the ½ hour time slots. So
that the Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended,
please commit to at least one ½ time slot. “Can you not
watch with me for one hour?” [Cf. Matthew 26:40]

GYMNASIUM ENTRANCE PROJECT. We postponed
the presentation to the Borough of Rutherford’s Board of
Adjustment because our architect was unavailable. As
yet, no new date is scheduled for [hopefully] Borough
approval of the variances needed for our project. The
front of the gym is one of the last eyesores on our Parish
campus; we hope to put a new brick front and extend the
area out further to provide needed office space. I will
keep you posted on its progress; I need as many of you
as possible to attend the board meeting when we get our
new date for a respectful “storming of the Bastille.”

CAN YOU HELP?
A second grade Catechist is needed! Our Second grade catechist, Mrs. Vicky MacFadyen,
has just been diagnosed with a serious illness and will
not be returning to our Religious Formation program.
We wish to thank her for her many years of service as a
catechist both on Sunday and Wednesday and as a
mentor for the Confirmation program. Please keep her
and her family in your prayers. If you can help, please
call Betty Hatler at 438-2200 ext 140 or email bahatler
@gmail.com. I will work with you and will even accept
a team.
PART TIME CLEANING POSITION A part time cleaning position is available in The Academy at
Saint Mary. Afternoon to evening hours - 4 hours daily.
Please contact the School Office at (201) 933-8410 if
interested.
How to Report Abuse The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at (201) 407-3256.
HALLOWEEN With Halloween approaching next Wednesday, we ask
everyone to be extremely careful and think of the safety
of the children. Warn children not to eat any treats
before an adult has examined them. Decorate costumes
with reflective tape, bags should be light colored.
Children should carry flashlights. Costumes should be
short enough to prevent from tripping. Sturdy shoes
should be worn and hats and scarves should be tied
securely. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than
wearing a mask. Children should always be
accompanied by an adult. Please keep our children
safe!
BEQUESTS We are most grateful toIRENE HUDAK who in her Last Will
and Testament bequeathed Saint Mary Church $41,920.00
and to MARY F. SIWIK who bequeathed $10,000. to Saint
Mary Church. In the name of the parish family, we thank
these and all benefactors for their generous gifts. May the
Lord, who can never be outdone in generosity, bless these and
their families for their goodness.
