Staff news
All the staff try to make themselves accessible to
families at the beginning and end of the day. If you
want to have a chat with a teacher about any-
thing, it’s best to make an appointment, so that
they can give you their full attention.
Parents’ evening is coming up after half term, watch
out for the booking letter in the children’s book
bags.

Parking The vast majority of families have been super
supportive and have kept cars away from
Moorlands Grove and Brooklands Grove. There are
a few people though, who are still risking
injuring children by insisting on bringing cars close to
the school entrance. The streets were not
designed for cars, they are generally too narrow,
really only suitable for pedestrians.
Please, don’t bring cars up Moorlands Grove or
Brookland Grove. Follow the example of the
majority and walk to school, or at least part of the
way to school.
We have had a few near misses recently. It is every
drivers responsibility to keep all children safe, not just
the ones in your car.
NEVER park on or opposite the zigzag markings
around school. They are there to keep all children
safe.
Thank you
BOOK bags We have book bags on sale in the office, with the
new school logo on. They are available for £4.00.
Please don’t feel compelled to buy one if your
old style one is still going strong, they do last well!
Early finish at Christmas
We don’t ususally finish early at the end of the
autumn term, but as we are holding on to the
children until 23rd December, we have decided
to finish at 2pm, to give people a little extra time
to prepare for Christmas.
Building work We are drawing to the end of our building work now, there is just a last minute rush to get rid of the
portakabin and get the new offices established ready for the start of next half term. There has been an
unavoidable delay on the roller shutter for the kitchen serving counter. This is a vital piece of fire
resistant equipment for the kitchen and, unfortunately, we won’t be able to prepare hot meals until it
is installed. We will be serving sandwiches just for the first week after half term. We have been promised
that if they can get a hot meal out on the Friday of that week, they will! It’s such a shame because
Mandy is really looking forward to getting in there and creating meals. It will be worth it in the end!
With the end of the building work will come a relief for our neighbours who have been very patient
about parking around school. The staff will have a carpark for their cars, which should ease things.
Our main entrance will now be off Moorlands Grove, although during the day you will also be able to
access the office off Captain’s Clough Road on foot, using the top gate.
PTA news and events We have a few events coming up for the PTA. We are
mentally preparing ourselves for the two doses of
Spooky Disco that are coming up this week….all the
tickets have now been sold. If you are able to bake
some buns or biscuits for the café at the disco, please
drop them off on Wednesday morning.
On 17th November, the same day as the
Spotacular, we are holding another Ladies night. The
last evening was a great success with lots of
opportunities to buy new clothes, or try new beauty
products, as well as a chance to chat to some familiar
faces from the playground.
Please put the date in your diaries and try to
persuade your friends to come along.
We will be having a Christmas Market in school on 7th
December. In the run up we will be holding non
uniform days to gather in some tombola prizes and
our world famous “non parents room”.
More details in the November newsletter!
Bags 2 School
Your kind donations for Bags 2 School have raised £88
towards PTA funds. Many thanks!
School dinners and packed lunches As we approach the re-opening of the kitchen,
we thought this would be a good time to remind
you all about the great value school meals we
have on offer. All children in reception class, Y1
and Y2 get a free school meal every day. When
the children move into Y3 the cost of the meal is
heavily subsidised by Bolton Council to £1.25 a
day, which is fantastic value for money. The food
is lovely and is freshly cooked on the premises
each day by Mandy and her lovely team.
If your child would
prefer to bring
sandwiches to school,
there are a few things
to bear in mind to
make sure the school
complies with its
“Healthy School
Status”
Please make sure the
packed lunch is
healthy. We don’t
allow chocolate bars,
or fried crisps.
Chocolate cake is a lovely treat and sometimes
we have that in school, but just once a week.
Baked crisps are ok, not great, but ok!
If you could avoid blackcurrant juice, that would
be really helpful, it stains the tables!
Please don’t send in fizzy drinks.
Thanks for your co-
operation with this.
On the whole the
kids are great with
their packed
lunches, but every
now and then it
helps to have a
reminder!
Playtime snacks and classroom drinks We have noticed that some children are playing
fast and loose with the rules about snacks at
playtime! Just a quick reminder that as with the
packed lunches, they should be healthy snacks,
fruit, yoghurt, cheese, cereal bar for example.
During the day in school children are allowed
plain water only. No
flavoured water, even if
it is not coloured it is
still not allowed.
The children are
allowed free access to
their drinks during
lessons as we believe
hydration is good for
the brain.
Attendance Our attendance is looking ok...ish at the
moment. We have had an outbreak of chicken
pox in EYFS and Y1 which hasn’t helped, but is
beyond everyone’s control!
There are still families taking holiday in term time
which is really disappointing. We do understand
how important holidays are for families, but it is
harder to understand when the holidays are for
three weeks, or are second holidays in the year.
Please try to avoid any time away from school. It
is the only thing that Ofsted consistently find to
criticise time after time. We really need to
improve by 0.5% this year.
The attendance so far this year is
95.5% Which is 0.5% under where we need to be.
Allotment Well done to Y2 who have had yet another harvest
from the allotment, this time the baby corn has come
back to school. I think the Y2 classes win the
“biggest harvest” award!
School photographs Our school photographer is in on Friday18th November.
She will start taking photographs from 8:45 in the school
hall. The first photographs are always of families with
children who are not in school. If you have a child at
another school, or if they are preschool age, please
bring them along at 8:45 and we will get the pictures of
them together.
Throughout the rest of the day we will get the other
pictures taken, of children in family groups (if they
haven’t already been done first thing) and individual
pictures.
If you have any particular requests, please let us know
and we can do our best to accommodate. Maybe you
want a set of cousins together as a Christmas present
for grandparents?
We are assured that the photographs, although taken
later in the year than usual, will be back in school in time
for Christmas.
Back packs As the colder weather approaches we are
having trouble fitting all the coats and bags
on the pegs in school. We know the children
love their backpacks, but could we please ask
that the children just bring a small drawstring
bag into school with their PE kit in. Homework
and reading books are best transported in
school book bags. Thank you so much for your
co-operation in this. It’ll be great not to be
tripping over coats and backpacks after half
term!
This year Children In Need is on November 18th. As you
can see above, that is the very day our school
photographer is in. As lovely as it would be to have
school photographs in spotty gear, we have
decided to hold our spotacular a day early on Thursday
17th November.
The children and staff are invited to come to school
wearing as many spots as they can! We are really
looking forward to seeing how many spots (apart form
their chicken pox) they can squeeze into their outfits.
We will be doing spotty fun filled activities throughout
the day. If your child would like to join in with the
spotacular, please send them in their spotty outfits with
£1 donation for Children in Need.
We will also do a cake sale on the day, so if you can
donate cakes (the spottier the better) then please bring
them in on the morning of 17th November. If children
want to buy cakes at break time, they’ll need another
50p or so.
We’ll forego our Healthy Eating policy for the day!
Head lice We recently had a text suggesting that our head lice
problem “is getting beyond a joke”. I think this arises
because we are trying to be helpful. Many years
ago all schools were advised by health professionals
not to notify parents of instances of head lice in
school, because they are ever present in all
communities. We did stick to that for a while, but
eventually we began to send texts to alert parents.
This has not alleviated the problem, but it has
heightened everyone’s awareness. We don’t have
any more head lice than any other school or
community group. The only way to deal with head
lice is by checking your children’s hair each day by
combing thoroughly each evening to remove any
live lice, before they lay eggs.
If you need to treat any lice, then the chemist will be
able to advise you.
Please don’t buy “preventative” treatments, I am
assured that they don’t work.
We will speak to individual parents if we see head
lice on a child’s hair. We are doing our
best, but they are resilient creatures,
who are just as common now as they
were when the nit nurse used to visit!
Congratulations to all these children who had 100% attendance in the month of September
