EXAMPLES.
SQUARED TIMBER.Suppose the contents of a piece of square
timber, measuring 54 feet in length by 11
inches in breadth and 14 inches in depth,be required ; look for the page marked atthe head 11 x 14, and, in the columnopposite 54, you will find 57 feet 9 inch,es, the contents required. If you wishto find the contents of a piece of a greaterlength than tiiat contained in the table
;
for instance, 73 feet—take the amount of36 and 37 feet : If the breadth or depth is
not in the table ; for instance, 10 x 22
—
take the amount of 10 x II, and double it.
STAVES.
The following Tables are calculated to
shew the number of standard staves con-tained in any given quantity of staves ofother dimensions, the standard being 5^feet long by 1^ inches thick ; for instance
:
If it is required to know the number ofstandard staves, in 400 pieces of staves,
5^ feet long by 2 inches thick, it will befound to be 480 pieces, as per Table 1st,
Again, if you wish to know the number ofstandard staves in 400 pieces, 4^ feet longby 3 inches thick, per Table 8, it will befound to be 426 pieces and 66 parts ; and80 on for any other dimensions from 1 to
10,000.
PLANKS.
The following Tables are calculated to
show the number of standard planks in anygiven number of planks of other dimen-sions, the star^.dard being 12 feet long by11 inches broad and 2^ inches thick;—for
example : If it is required to know the
number of standard planks in 500 pieces of
7 inches broad by 2 inches thick, opposite
to 500 will be found 254 pieces and 50parts, the number they contain, and so
on for any other from 1 to 10,000 pieces.
