March 2014

Dear Friends,

The six weeks before Easter is called the "Lenten Season". It is a time to focus on the suffering, death and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The word "lent" means "lengthen" and stands for that time in spring when the days grow longer.

The original period of Lent was 40 hours. It was spent fasting to commemorate the suffering of Christ and the 40 hours He spent in the tomb. In the early 3rd century, Lent was lengthened to 6 days. About 800 AD it was changed to 40 days. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter but Sundays are not included in those 40 days. Those 40 days correspond with Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness.

Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is celebrated in many parts of the world with feasting and takes its name from "shriving" or forgiving sins. The FRENCH call it "Mardi Gras". (I never understood why Lansdale’s has a Holiday parade called Mardi Gras in November.) The Germans call it "Fausching". The feasting comes from the custom of using up household fats prior to the 40 days of Lenten fasting, when no fat is used.

The Lenten season is intentionally set aside for examination, instruction, repentance and prayer. This season is one of preparation for all the people of God. It is written in Galatians 6:3-5, “For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load.”

As we enter the Lenten Season, let us examine ourselves and draw closer to His presence and grace by intensifying our prayer time, by increasing our Bible reading, by improving our worship attendance, and by multiplying our fellowship with one another. Let God’s grace grow in you and flow through you. It will be amazing.

In God’s Love,

Pastor Max

Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ,

I hope you are as excited as I am by the news that our Fulfilling the Covenant Capital Campaign has not only reached but exceeded our $3 million goal! This is an important milestone in the history of our Annual Conference. It is our first capital campaign to reach its goal.

To all of you who made pledge commitments I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation. Thank you for your willingness to participate in this endeavor and for your sacrificial stewardship to ensure that our local churches might be spared the burden of increased payments to the Pre-82 Retired Clergy Pension Liability.

Your sacrifice means that significant ministries will not be further hampered or diminished because of this obligation. And it will help to ensure that the liability may be completely paid off by our 2021 schedule, if not before.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you for your selfless generosity and your commitment to faithful stewardship of God's abundant gifts. I rejoice in our ministry together, inspired by Jesus Christ and manifested through our local churches. Sincerely, Bishop Peggy Johnson

The UMC website

The United Methodist Church announces that UMC.org, the denomination's official website, has gotten a makeover.

Who are we? What do we believe? How do we serve? What's going on? The new UMC.org makes finding information and staying in-the-know more user-friendly with improved search capabilities -- and it's mobile friendly too!

UMC.org still has all the award-winning stories and photos you're used to seeing, but now it will be more about your own spiritual journey - a place to help you navigate faith, giving, life issues and what it means to be a United Methodist.

Be sure to check it out.

Current Food Needs

While Manna appreciates all donations, the following goods are especially needed right now: •Canned Fruit (peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, pineapple, mandarin oranges, etc) •Canned Meats (tuna, chicken, turkey, chili, beef stew, chicken dumpling, salmon, spam) •Fresh produce: Vegetables and fruits (bananas, apples)

And the Survey Said…………….. Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the 2014 LUMC Goals Survey. We received a total of

59 surveys. You have spoken “loud and clear” about what you as the members of the church would like us to focus on in the upcoming months and we appreciate your input.

Church Council met the other night to review the results and we are happy to report we will be focusing on the following key areas in 2014:

Developing a process for engaging visitors.

Establish a new young adult group (post-college and singles).

Increase church advertising and promotion through social media, a digital sign and other means.

Increase attendance at the Praise Service by 20% of the current average attendance.

Another goal also received a high number of votes and that was to increase church membership by 20 members. We agreed to monitor this over the course of the year but we felt this will be a RESULT of doing all the other things we have prioritized over the course of the year.

We also received a number of write-in comments on the survey and we have logged and discussed each of these. Church Council leadership all agreed that we also need to focus on Sunday school growth, attendance and the actual facilities that we have for our children’s Sunday School. This will be our 5th goal.

As one of the leaders of this church I am SO encouraged by the survey and by the growing excitement and creativity I see in many of our members. I believe that 2014 will be an awesome year: already, members have come to us with additional ideas and an offer to start a new small group. Please keep our church in prayer and consider what you might do to help us achieve our goals. I have seen many new faces enter our doors and I am praying we can get them engaged in the life of our church.

Please consider doing something for our church that you have never done before. Look for opportunities for service that fit into your busy schedule. When God calls you to do something, He will find a way for you to do it. Remember the Power of One (each one of us) working together as a team is unstoppable!! Look for opportunities that you see advertised in the bulletin, Circuit Rider, on the bulletin board and many other ways. Or feel free to talk to Pastor Max or any Church Council member about ways that you can become involved.

Nursery News - March 2014

Welcome to all the newborns born in the past couple of months. I would like to invite you to our church nursery.

My name is Donna Fritz and I have been a member here for over 45 years, and the nursery director for almost two years. I have had childcare experience teaching preschool, and after receiving a certificate from the Sheffield School for Nannies I helped raise two children for nine years. Two years ago I received my CDA (Child Development Associate credential) from Manor College. I will be renewing my CPR and First Aid Training very soon. Working with children and seeing them grow and learn is very rewarding to me. I hope to see more infants, toddlers and children come soon to our nursery. Sunday morning hours are 8:45A.M. –12:45P.M.

College Care Packages

Oasis (former ly known as the 1935 Young Adult Group) is collecting $5 gift cards for Starbucks, Wawa, or similar stores to use in care packages for our members who are college students. A box labeled "College Care Packages" will be outside Stringer Auditorium from now until Sunday, March 9th.

As I sit here in February looking out at all the snow, its hard to believe that March, and Spring are just about a month away. It can’t come quick enough for me. I love the beginning of Spring-seeing the bulbs start to sprout, and buds start to appear on the trees. The earth is coming back to life after a very long, very snowy winter.

March also begins the season of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. Christians use this time to re-evaluate their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something, or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. The Sunday School will be using this season to support a very special Lenten Mission Project. This year our chosen project is the “Haiti Hot Lunch Program”. The Hot Lunch program provides Children in schools operated by the Methodist Church of Haiti with hot, nutritional meals, that many children otherwise would not receive. Before this program was started, most children did not eat a meal at school. This program ensures access to nutritional meals, cooked on-site, to provide energy for them to learn throughout the day. More information will be presented on Sunday, March 9th, during the Sunday School time and both Church Services.

Confirmation Class is going strong with 7 young adults meeting each week during the Sunday School time. On Sunday, February 8, the students were presented with new Bibles during the worship services. These Bibles are to be used as they prepare for Confirmation and joining the church. The students in the class are:

Jason Beideman, Journey Burroughs, Johnny Mowbray, Jimmy Neild, Stephen Nwogwugwu, Dianna Perry and Owen Ranck. Please pray and support these young adults as they prepare to dedicate their lives to the Lord and to the church.

I wish you all a wonderful March. Please come on out to Sunday School. There are a lot of fun things going on and we want you and your children to be a part of it!!

G.Y.M. God’s Youth in Motion

The Youth are just finishing our latest unit discussing Christmas…no I did not stutter. I said Christmas. Christmas approaches so quickly and the season is so full of activities that we never actually get an opportunity to discuss the components of the story of Christmas. We’ve discussed Mary and Joseph and their relationship and most recently the Wise Men and their relationship with Herod. With the Wise Men and Herod, the Wise Men knew of and saw the Star. It meant hope, grace and a symbol of the Messiah to them. To Herod, the star was a threat. A threat to his lifestyle and his Kingdom. In this lesson we discussed how even today, this simple lesson of the same symbol meaning different things to different people still applies, 2,000 years later. Same lesson…different times. Ask your teenager!

Thank you to everyone for their support of the Youth through the Lasagna Sale and Spaghetti Dinner. Proceeds from the two events will go to support the Youth Musical. The Youth Musical will take the place the weekend of March 22nd & 23rd. We’ll tear down the stage and return Stringer to its normal configuration on Monday, March 24th @ 6:30P.M.

We are looking forward to April, the Rummage Sale will be Friday, April 4th and Saturday, April 5th. Collections and setup will begin on Saturday, March 29th from 9A.M. to Noon. Please mark your calendars.

Last but not least, the Youth Mission Trip is coming July 12 to 19. We’re headed to McColl, SC and have started signups now. Cost is $100 for church members, $200 for non-active, non-Members. Deposits of $50 are due March 1st. Spots are limited. Please see Brent Snyder ([email protected]) with questions.
