1. The classification: definition
14The classification society as an ROs _ Barcelona, 14-15 December 2010
1. Classification: an overview
► What the Class does not cover?
It does not cover every piece of structure or item of equipment on board the vessel, nor does it cover operational requirements
► Classification remains voluntary
Its effectiveness depends on the shipowner, including the manner the ship is operated and maintained
During class surveys, it is neither possible nor expected that the surveyor scrutinize the entire structure of the vessel or its machinery.
Surveys involve a sampling based upon empirical experience:
• Parts of the vessel subject to corrosion
• Parts exposed to the highest incidence of stress or
• Parts likely to exhibit signs of fatigue or damage
15The classification society as an ROs _ Barcelona, 14-15 December 2010
A REFERENCE STANDARD : CLASSIFICATION RULES1. The classification: an overview
► 5 Key steps for class society during the construction of a new ship
► During the ship’s life, ships are then subject to periodic surveys (annual, intermediate, renewal) to maintain their classification
Technical Review of design Plans

What Bureau Veritas would expect from a Flag administration
► Technical competency in the Flag administration
For elaborating rules and procedures
BV is working in cooperation with administrations : decisions have to be taken jointly
► The fewest particular regulatory regimes to be kept to the bare minimum international rules setting to be preferred
including data transfer protocol
► Monitoring of ROs
Transparency of RO record to be built upon towards less audits (2 BV units are audited every week !)
► Effective system of two-way communication
Communication from RO towards administration
Communication from administration towards its ROs
