Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton
Lane for today’s Sussex County League
Division Three match against Sidlesham.
We extend a warm welcome to our
visitors and their supporters who have
made the short journey for this
afternoon’s game, and to match referee,
Ian Moore, from Angmering.
Rolling the clock back a week saw our first
meeting with a Langney Wanderers side
who had only suffered one defeat all
season.
What followed was one of our best team
performances of the season, with few
begrudging us the five goal victory, against
last season's champions.
The result was testament to the whole
squads' attitude and application at training
and on the day - not to mention the
management of Andy, Neilsa and
Grahame Vick who were forced to mix it
up with our regular goalkeeper Simon
Hasted injured; and a back line missing
Ben Blanshard and Probee (suspended)
and left-back Graeme Dowden who
recently signed for Chichester City as we
documented last week, allowing Paul
Sumnall to step in for a rare appearance.
But even with the enforced changes, we
came out strong and Alex Barnes’ well
deserved hat-trick capped a memorable
afternoon at Walton Lane.
This latest win - coupled with an
impressive 15 goal haul in the last three
matches - has opened up a six point gap at
the top of the Division 3 table with four to
play - and let's not forget, a cup semi-final
to look forward too against either Burgess
Hill & Hurst Albion or Ferring.
But you feel there are a few twists to
come, and Sidlesham will know all about
our game with a number of former Robins
set to line-up for them today, and also
fairly fresh from the memory of our 0-0
draw in the reverse fixture at Christmas.
Gary Jefkins men are on a good run
themselves having beaten Burgess Hill &
Hurst Albion on Saturday to sit handily in
second spot.
So not only do we have a local derby on
our hands today, but a table-topping clash,
too - and one that we will be keen to take
maximum points from to keep up our title
challenge with Langney and Southwick's
games in hand, and of course Sids well
placed also.
Rhys Hughes from Mulberry Contractors
has done another great job in getting the
pitch ready today so we hope it will help to
make for some free flowing football and a
decent game.
The reserves are without a game today,
but ironically host Sidlesham here next
Saturday (21st, 2pm k.o). Commiserations
to John Stead's under 16's who put up a
valiant effort in their Invitation Cup semi-
final at Barnham Trojans Puma's, going
down 2-0.
As this is the last programme of the
campaign - and we're only in the middle of
February (!!) - I would like to take the
opportunity to thank all our loyal sponsors
for their continued support of our
voluntary run club. We have a committee
who work tirelessly to make for the best
environment possible, and along with you
- the supporters - having the backing that
we do from a number of local trades
certainly makes running a local football
club that bit easier, and more enjoyable
for everyone concerned.
A quick reminder that the bar is open
throughout the afternoon, serving hot and
cold refreshments, with scores from
around the grounds on the TV.
Enjoy the game, and Up The Robins!
SUSSEX COUNTY FOOTBALL
LEAGUE DIVISION 3
By ALAN PRICEBosham firmly stated their title
credentials this week with a five goals to
nil rout of Langney Wanderers –
including a hat-trick for Alex Barnes –
and move six points clear at the top of
the Division Three table.
Bosham started well and created early
pressure on the blue and black stripes,
looking for an early goal to settle
nerves.
Manager Andy Probee, and fellow
defender, Ben Blanshard were both
suspended meaning changes to the
starting line up and Paul Sumnall made a
welcome return along with Bradley
Miles to add to the strength in depth.
Only six minutes were on the clock
when Bosham took the lead to the
delight of the home support thanks to
the predatory instincts of Adam Brett.
Barnes surged in from the right and
fired a shot goalward. Keeper, Leigh
Sherwood, fumbled the effort and Brett
pounced to poke the ball home.
Langney remonstrated for an offside but
their claims went unanswered leaving
the reds to soak up the glory.
Bosham continued to dominate their
visitors and goals seemed more likely to
come from the hosts.
The inevitable happened just after the
half hour when Barnes grabbed his first
strike thanks in no small measure to the
great work of Marco Giambelardini.
Giambelardini was becoming a constant
thorn to the Langney defence and he
bemused several players before setting
the ball on a preverbal plate for Barnes
to finish spectacularly into the roof of
the net with Sherwood unable to do
anything to prevent it.
Bosham tails were up and frustrations
were beginning to boil up for the
visitors. Shane Saunders was lucky to
receive just a stiff talking too from
referee, Jamie Wells after a searing
tackle on Kieran Carter and Bosham
went into the break with their lead
intact and looking full of confidence with
a second half still to come.
The likes of Kasey Smith and Ben Saber
did their best the midfield for Langney
but Dave Bryant and Kieran Carter were
strong in defence for the Robins and
when a third goal arrived in the match it
was a big moment for the reds as it
almost settled the tie for good.
This time Barnes surged through a static
defence and with only Sherwood to
beat, neatly found the bottom corner to
spark great celebration all round.
Bosham stepped up a further gear and
added two more goals before the end.
Barnes, deservedly, nailed his hat trick
after being set up expertly by Brett but
the best was certainly saved till last.
James Wilson found the ball at his feet
almost thirty yards out and tried a
speculative effort on goal.
Amazingly the ball ended up sailing over
the stunned Sherwood’s head and into
the roof of the net to set the seal on a
perfect day in the office for the Robins.
