Have you visited the
Reedy Creek Elemen-
tary Little Free Li-
brary? Did you know
that the library was
designed, built and
donated by a RCE
4th grade scholar and
her family? Everyone is invited to open
the door. It’s open 24/7, 365 days a
year! The Little Free Library is a “take
a book, return a book” free book
exchange. Scholars can keep the free
books as long as they wish or return
them to the free library. Infants
through 5th grade will find a variety of
authors, titles and interests. Books are
always changing so be sure to visit
often! Questions or for more infor-
mation about the Little Free Library,
email [email protected].
Warmest Regards,

My how time has flown! One half of the
school year is complete. We have many opportunities for you to support our
school this coming month like our second quarter awards ceremonies, Daddy/
Daughter Dance, Book Fair, and our International Festival.
I am grateful every day for the opportuni-
ty to be called “principal.” I strongly believe that all parents want the best for
their children and want them to be suc-cessful in school. Our teachers and staff need your help and partnership to make
this happen as we focus on this second semester. Children benefit greatly when
parents/guardians take an active role in their child’s education. Research proves
that when students have parental support at home, they enjoy their learning and
school life even more. Please support our efforts to finish strong
by making sure your child at-tends school daily and on time. Classes begin at 8am.
We need your help to reduce daily tar-dies. Also, please re-member report cards
go home on February 9th, please take time to review your child’s report card and
contact their teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
CALLING ALL FAMILIES!! Saturday, February 24th is our 6th
annual International Festival! The festival is from 11am-2pm and admission is $2 per
family. We are celebrating the diversity in our school community. We are looking for volunteers to share a cultural talent or
skill. If you or your child would be willing to share a talent or skill (i.e. dance, play
African drums, sing, etc.,) please notify your child's classroom teacher, or com-
plete the form sent home by your child's teacher to confirm that you will be able to
perform during our International Festival. Thank you for helping to strengthen our
home-school partnership, and for making our International Festival a continued
success! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bourguignon or
Mrs. Graham at 980-343-6480.
I will continue communicating information about school events, dates and activities
using email and phone connect-ed messag-es. Please contact the school if you are
not receiving our emails or connect-ed

During the month of February, our scholars will be learning about China and its culture for our International Festival on February 24th.
For reading, they will be encouraged to use all reading strategies, work more on being able to identify the main idea, and
retell key details of the text that they
are reading. Our focus in reading will be to understand non-fiction texts and
how that type of genre helps us to gain information about the topic that we are reading about. Our scholars will also be
able to write “How to…” stories for others to read. They will be using the words that show order (First, Next,
Then, and Last) to transition from one step to another. For math, our scholars will be working on both addition and subtraction, being able to decompose a
set of objects within 10 in more than one way and to demonstrate an under-standing of making combinations for a
given number using pictures and/or equations. They will learn to add and subtract within 5 using mental strate-
gies. Please help your child daily at
home to practice using the skills and strategies that they have learned in
school. Thank you for your support!
Our Reader’s Workshop lessons are
teaching strategies to study character’s actions and examine their traits. When reading with your child, ask them to use
evidence from the story to describe the
character's personality. Scholars will begin writing realistic
fiction stories in Writer’s Workshop in which they will create pretend charac-ters and come up with small moment,
real-life adventures for the characters. In mathematics, scholars are learning strategies for solving subtraction facts
to 20. These strategies include counting to subtract, subtract 10 to subtract, and using addition to subtract. These strate-gies will encourage deeper understand-
ing of the relationship between addition and subtraction.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, February 24th for Reedy Creek’s Annual International Day!
First grade will educate you with won-derful projects and creations about the
great countries of Australia and New Zealand! Mark your calendars for this exciting event!

Thank you for purchasing the EOG prep book for $20. Your child’s
teacher is still accepting payments.
In literacy we are finishing up our biog-raphy unit and moving into our unit on International Studies. Our students will
focus on South America, with each class-room looking at a specific country in more depth and detail. This will prepare
students for our upcoming International Festival. After this unit we will then focus our attention on mysteries. In math, we are starting our unit on
fractions and continuing to build on the skills we have learned previously. Stu-dents will learn to recognize fractions as
part of a whole, read them, write them, order them on a number line, find equiv-alent fractions and compare them ac-
cording to size. Please continue to make sure that your child is reading each night and completing
his or her reading log as well as studying math facts.
Can you believe we are halfway through the school year?! Mid-year
testing is coming to a close. Report card grades were submitted prior, so teachers will communicate scores as
tests are completed. In reading, we are wrapping up our
character study unit and will soon be focusing on nonfiction. In writing, we are finishing up our opinion pieces. In math, we are continuing to work on
strategies to solve various problems and are using regrouping. We just finished our science unit about weath-
er. In social studies we are beginning
on our biography research unit.
Please continue to support your child’s academic growth during second se-mester. Continue reading with your
each night. Monitor that your child accurately answers comprehension questions as well as writing response
questions about both fiction and non-fiction books. Please practice telling time, counting collections of coins, and reviewing the concepts on math sheets
sent home. Please continue to check and sign your child’s agenda nightly, and to return their Friday Folder
weekly.
Keep a lookout for information re-garding our Valentine’s Day party!
Thank you for your continued support!

ments.
This month in Math we will be continu-ing with our Fraction/Decimal unit. This
unit is very important because Fractions and Decimals makes up close to 30% of the questions on the EOG! This is the
first time that students will be adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. In 4th grade adding fractions is limited to like denominators, e.g. ⅖ +
⅕. We will continue expand our knowledge by multiplying fractions and
plotting fractions on a line plot. Stu-
dents will be introduced to the relation-ship between fractions and decimals. As you can see, this month is jammed
packed! Be sure to ask your child’s teacher ways you can help them be successful. With your support, these
challenging concepts will be a breeze!
Social Studies- Native Americans and
Early Explorers
After learning about the 3 regions in North Carolina, we will be figuring out how the early settlers of North Caroli-
na cultivated the land and why they
chose to live near waterways.
Writing- Informational Writing
This month we will be finishing up our
final drafts of our informational piece
that we have been working on.
Reading- Historical Fiction
We will be delving into our historical
fiction unit. Students will be working on the importance of setting and how
setting drives a story.

The Encore Team
Ask your children, what kind of
responsibilities does a good
digital citizen have?
In technology class we discuss the Rings
of Responsibility...
• reflect upon their offline responsibili-
ties within their self, family, and commu-
nity.
• examine their online responsibilities
within their self, family, and community.
• learn that good digital citizens are
responsible and respectful in the digital
world.
Thank you for purchasing the EOG
prep book for $20. Your child’s
teacher is still accepting payments.
In reading students are beginning nonfiction research
projects to compare and contrast multiple accounts of a topic, or event and analyze how point of view is con-
veyed. In math students will continue their
work with fractions. We will be focus-ing on dividing fractions and reviewing all fraction operations. We will dive
deeper into analyzing and solving multi-
step word problems.
In Science we will focus on our ecosys-tems unit. We will then move into cells and genetics.
Students will be completing a unit project on Africa. This project will be focused on science and social stud-
ies. It will also allow students to re-search Africa for the International Festival.

School Counselor Spotlight
We are very pleased to announce our new K-
2 School Counselor, Ms. Shanice Clinton. Ms.
Clinton is from New York. She attended
North Carolina Central University and gradu-
ated with a M.Ed. in School Counseling and a
M.A. in Clinical Mental Health.
Help us welcome Ms. Clinton to the Reedy
Creek Elementary School family.
Thank You Parents for getting your scholars
to school on time and ready to learn for the
Perfect Attendance Spirit Week in January. The Perfect Attendance Spirit
Week was a success! Our scholars had their name put into a daily drawing
during Perfect Attendance Spirit Week for a special prize if they were in
school, on time and ready to learn by 8:00 a.m. We want to continue to teach
our scholars the importance of attendance and how it is the baseline factor for
their success. Again, thank you parents for your commitment to the success of
your children. As always, please let us know if we can help with any issues you
may be having with getting your scholar to school on time and ready to learn
by 8:00 a.m. each day.
