In “Christianese” – the language and expressions of Christians - we have the expression, “layingout a fleece.” This saying hearkens back to the book of Judges and a man named Gideon. Godcalled Gideon to deliver God’s people from the captivity of the Midianites.
So Gideon lays out a fleece - a sheep skin - on the ground at night. In the morning if the fleeceis wet and the ground dry, this would be a confirming sign that God is being truthful. When Godcomplied, Gideon lays down another test. This time the ground must be wet and the fleece dry.
Hence, among many professed Christians today “laying out a fleece” is a way of determiningGod’s will. They pray, “God, if You make such n’ such happen, I will know Your will.” However, isthis a legitimate practice?
Personal anecdotes aside, consider:1. Gideon was a weak individual who disbelieved what God plainly said. He was not an obedientbeliever seeking God’s will.2. God accommodating a weak individual in one instance does not create a method for determin-ing God’s will for everyone. 3. Believers should never try to be “God’s boss” in setting conditions He must meet.4. Gideon’s test was not to determine God’s will but to evaluate God’s faithfulness.
