Common Vision Blox with TurboDrive
Version 1.0 from 21/07/2016
Author: Heike Gast, Arno Dietz
For TELEDYNE DALSA GigE cameras with TurboDrive
Teledyne Dalsa has introduced the unique patent-pending TurboDrive
technology allowing data rates beyond the GigE Vision limit. Users of
STEMMER IMAGING’s Common Vision Blox (CVB) software library are
provided with the latest TurboDrive version in the most recent software
release. This Application Note describes the usage of TurboDrive with
Common Vision Blox.

1. Introduction
According to the specification, the Ethernet based GigE Vision interface allows data transfer rates of up to 100 Megabytes per second. However, current industrial cameras often generate much larger data volumes due to the ever-increasing resolutions and speeds. Users who have been working with the GigE Vision interface so far, have reached the limit of the GigE Vision bandwidth and had to adjust their systems to faster interfaces such as CameraLink or CoaXPress. These interfaces, however, cannot guarantee a safe data transmission, quite contrary to GigE Vision, offering integrated Packet Resend functionality. Moreover, CameraLink and CoaXPress interfaces require an additional acquisition card and cable lengths are limited when using CameraLink.
Thanks to the TurboDrive technology, the image data can be transferred for processing at rates exceeding the constraints of Gigabit Ethernet. This increases the effective throughput (between 120% and 235% of normal bandwidth) in typical vision applications without losing the data transmission reliability of GigE Vision.
This is enabled by TurboDrive’s advanced data encoding techniques, that look at the redundancy in the data coming out of the sensor. It uses image entropy based encoding to model pixel information with no loss of information. This allows faster data transmission on the link as each pixel is comprised of fewer bits for encoding.
The latest versions of STEMMER IMAGING’s Common Vision Blox (CVB) programming library and the corresponding CameraSuite have already integrated drivers which support the TurboDrive technology.
All mentioned Software in this document can be downloaded at the Stemmer Imaging’s website or the Common Vision Blox homepage: http://www.commonvisionblox.com/en/.

2. Supported Models
The current GigE models of Teledyne Dalsa’s Genie Nano and Linea camera series are already designed for the use of TurboDrive. Thus, users will now experience all the benefits of the proven Ethernet interface with extra high data volumes.
An example comparison of transfer rates using TurboDrive to standard mode is in following table:

3. Configuration for using TurboDrive in CVB
Configure the GigE network card and camera performance settings first (refer CVB GenICam
User Guide).
No further hardware or software changes to your network or application are necessary.
Use the CVB GenICam Browser from at least CVB 2016.
The feature has to be enabled and saved in the Configured Devices -> Device Options
(results in GenICam.ini file entry).
Enable “Use Turbo Drive” option always together with the cameras listed under
supported models!

4. CVB TurboDrive Technology Demo
This optional tool can be used to demonstrate the TurboDrive functionality:
the demonstration program checks on startup if TurboDrive is enabled in the Genicam.ini file and if not, asks to enable it,
compression factor is dependent on image content: o Images with a lot of details (e.g. much image noise) = low compression, o Images with few details (large areas with similar pixel values) = high
compression,
Network Bandwidth = compressed data rate,
Image Data Rate = uncompressed data rate,
CPU workload with TurboDrive + ~5-10%,
right click on the image -> zoom mode can be changed to 1:1,
demonstration program uses camera on port 0.
Current released version is for mono cameras. Version with color cameras will be available in the end of this year and later also in CVB.
Careful! Framerate can be set to maximum framerate, even if TurboDrive is disabled and the data rate is higher than the GigE limit of ~100 MB/sec.

5. TELEDYNE DALSA TurboDrive Performance Tool
This optional tool can be used to calculate the estimated additional throughput based on the size of one example image and the mathematical model of TurboDrive.
