Associate Professor, Division for Clinical Sciences, University of Lund, Sweden.“Jan Apelqvist is the Ingmar Bergman of Swedish diabetic foot medicine and the Stieg Larsson ofScandinavian wound care, and like their remarkable art, Jan’s equally remarkable scientific work is knownnot just in Sweden but throughout Europe, and indeed the world,” said Dr. Armstrong. “Going back some 30 years to his earliest days as a physician, Jan has lived and breathed diabetic footresearch and care -- he is an international scientist totally focused on the goal of preventing amputationsand saving limbs,” Dr. Andros said.Dr. Apelqvist helped found and served as the first chairman of the Swedish Wound Healing Society andis currently president of the European Wound Management Association. He has served on a number ofinternational working groups on diabetes, PAD and the diabetic foot. Dr. Apelqvist is on the editorialboards of several European and North American professional journals. For nearly three decades, Dr.Apelqvist has designed, coordinated and participated in many clinical trials in the areas of diabetes,peripheral vascular disease and wound management. He has given more than 1,000 lectures on the dia-betic foot and other complications of diabetes.A 1979 graduate of the medical school of the University of Umeå, Sweden, Dr. Apelqvist also receiveda PhD in 1990 from the University of Lund.

COURSE DESCRIPTION DFCon 2012 is the premier international interdisciplinary diabetic foot conference inNorth America. This year’s conference is joint sponsored by Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Ciné-Med® and InternationalConference Management, Inc. It features the presentation of the 9th Annual Edward James Olmos Award for Advocacyin Amputation Prevention. The course is designed for the wide spectrum of generalists and specialists who diagnoseand manage the diabetic foot. It will delve into diagnostic and interventional strategies for diabetic foot ulcers andamputation prevention. Featuring a world-renowned faculty, it offers the opportunity to review state-of-the-artconcepts and techniques.
CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, attendees will be able to: ✲ List key risk factors associ-ated with ulceration and amputation. ✲ Discuss the importance of appropriate vascular interventions and their region-al and ethnic variations in diabetic foot care. ✲ Recognize the growing importance of the diabetic foot as an interna-tional healthcare problem. ✲ Discuss the role of various technologies and their impact on healing and preventing dia-betic foot wounds. ✲ Outline the appropriate use of various shoes, insoles and braces in foot care. ✲ Outline the basicsof appropriate antibiotic care of the infected diabetic foot. ✲ Discuss the complexities of the microenvironment of thediabetic foot wound. ✲ Cite the fiscal and social impact of diabetic foot ulcers and amputation.
