The new science of cities stands at a crossroads. It
encompasses rather dierent, or even conicting,approaches. Future cities place citizens at thecore of the innovation process when creatingnew urban services, through “experience labs”,the development of urban apps or the provisionof “open data”. But future cities also describethe modernisation of urban infrastructures andservices such as transport, energy, culture, etc.,through digital ICT technologies: ultra-fast xedand mobile networks, the Internet of things, smartgrids, data centres, etc. In fact during the last twodecades local authorities have invested heavilyin new infrastructures and services, for instance
putting online more and more public servicesand trying to create links between -still prevalent-silo approaches with the citizen taking anincreasingly centre-stage role. However, so far theresults of these investments have not lived up toexpectations, and particularly the transformationof the city administration has not been as rapid noras radical as anticipated. Therefore, it can be saidthat there is an increasing awareness of the needto deploy new infrastructures to support updatedpublic services and of the need to develop newservices able to share information and knowledgewithin and between organizations and citizens.
And above this, there is an urgent need todiscuss among practitioners and academicianssuccessful cases and new approaches able tohelp to build better future cities.
Taking place in Shanghai, the paradigm ofchallenges for future cities and a crossroaditself between East and West, the InternationalConference on City Sciences responds to theseand other issues by bringing together academics,policy makers, industry analysts, providers andpractitioners to present and discuss their ndings.
A broad range of topics related to infrastructuresand services in the framework of city sciencesare welcome as subjects for papers, posters andpanel sessions:
• Developments of new infrastructures andservices of relevance in an urban context:
broadband, wireless, sensors, data, energy,transport, housing, water, waste, andenvironment.
• ICT-enabled urban innovations• Smart city developments and cases• Social and economic developments citizen-
centric• Renewed government services in a local level• Simulation and modeling of the urban context
Additional relevant topics are also welcomed.
Authors of selected papers from the conferencewill be invited to submit to special issues ofinternational peer-reviewed academic journals.

Submission of Abstracts:
Abstracts should be about 2 pages (800 to1000 words) in length and contain the following
information:
• Title of the contribution
• A research question• Remarks on methodology• Outline of (expected) results• Bibliographical notes (up to 6 main references
used in the paper)
All abstracts will be subject to blind peer reviewby at least two reviewers.
