Pull Open the Door, Let Out the Church!I remember putting all my weight into prying open the massive door of an old cathedral in England. One had to really want into that place. Fact is, church architects back in the day designed cathedrals to be difficult to enter. Faith required a deep commitment. It started at the door.

Our approach these days, is to throw open the doors. We even wander into the community to share the good news of God’s unconditional love. But make no mistake: The commitment to being a church at work in the world is no less demanding now than before.

Consider St. Luke’s this summer:More than 500 children were in and out of this building in summer programming that gave them a look at the life of faith – and the best week of their summer. Imagine the commitment that preceded those events. We served hundreds of folks all over the city on Servant Day, Aug. 2, then returned on Aug. 3 for Back-to-School Extravaganza. Once a year we greet school kids and their families who line up in numbers we won’t see around here again until Christmas. We share school supplies and such – all to build the confidence of our young neighbors in those early days of a new school year. Imagine the commitment.

A number of folks will be moved to visit the church after a summer of powerful connections with committed St. Luke’s Servants. Some have been looking for purpose in their lives, just like we were when we showed up here. Because of our commitment, we will be ready.

Our new worship series, “Living On Purpose,” will offer a glimpse into a more meaningful life – regardless of whether it’s smooth sailing. (p. 4)

An entire Fall Semester in Adult Learning Opportunities will help new guests and long-time members alike take next steps on their faith journey. (p. 20)

So, when you walk through those open doors this month, remember: faith requires a deep commitment. It only starts at the door.

Organ, Chancel Choir, and on the third Sunday of each month, a full Orchestra lift hearts and minds in praise of God. The classic style of liturgy, invites the worshiper into a setting that carries on traditions of the church in a time-honored, yet forward-looking fashion.

It features relevant messages by our senior pastor along with amazing musical talent and a more relaxed, interac-tive environment.

Later @St. Luke’s6PM in Robertson Chapel with Dr. Marion Miller – Come hear contemporary Christian, gospel and jazz music featuring the Later Band and Vocals, along with a challenging, thought-provoking message. Communion is served every Sunday and is available to all persons, along with light refreshments before and after worship.

The Garden8:15, 9:15 & 10:15AM Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre with Dr. Linda McCoy – The Garden is a satellite ministry of St. Luke’s providing non-traditional worship in a comfortable, casual setting. Music is provided by The Good Earth Band. The worship experience is hosted off campus at 9301 Michigan Rd., Indianapolis. It is designed to reach out to seekers who might not otherwise engage with an established Christian community.

Taizé5-5:45PM Third Sunday of each month, by the baptismal font in the Sanctuary, with musical community and Rev. Kim King – This service of peace and candlelight offers a contemplative style of worship. Silence, scriptures, prayer and music combine to engage worshipers in a spiritual experience.

There are even non-musical needs to help support the hundreds of music makers. Taizé Musical Community Small vocal and instrumental ensemble serving at monthly Taizé service (third Sunday, 5-5:45PM), rehearses one hour before each service. Contact Music Director Mark Squire at [email protected].

St. Luke’s Chancel Choir Welcoming New SingersThe St. Luke’s Chancel Choir serves each week in worship, supporting the congregation in their praise, offering inspiring and moving musical additions to each service, as well as presenting several concerts each year. This coming season includes special opportunities of singing with the Carmel Symphony & Anderson University choirs at the Palladium, the annual Christmas Concerts, and an international concert tour to Spain next May. While worship leading is the choir’s primary focus, the Chancel Choir undertakes numerous outreach projects – from supplying Fletcher Place Community Food Pantry with pasta & sauce, supporting Servant Day, and raising funds for St. Luke’s Outreach ministries. They also enjoy a profound level of fellowship and caring throughout their season. Previous choral experience is helpful, but not required of new singers. Ring In the New Ministry SeasonThe handbell choirs of St. Luke’s are excited to resume ministry this fall, and have several spaces within their ranks for individuals to join in the ministry. Joyful Rhythms rehearses each Monday night, and serves in a variety venues throughout the year. Director Marsha Coyner offers great coaching to individuals who may not have much experience in ringing bells. Wesleyan Ringers, under the direction of Mike Keller, rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and are seeking ringers with experience to fill out this high caliber ensemble! Contemporary Vocal Teams, Band Members, Artists of All Kinds – We’re Looking for You!Contemporary Worship Director Fran Wyatt ([email protected]) is welcoming additional singers, players, dancers and artists to serve at the 10:45 Service. In a comfortable rotation of service, musicians can tailor the ‘serve’ to match their availability, and enjoy the great fellowship and inspiration that accompanies serving on a ministry team! St. Luke’s OrchestraThe monthly contribution of the St. Luke’s Orchestra to worship is without compare! And now is the time to join their ranks. Whether a seasoned player, or perhaps a little rusty, the orchestra is welcoming new members for the upcoming season of ministry. STRING PLAYERS are particularly needed! Along with supporting worship at St. Luke’s, the orchestra has special opportunities planned, including a concert to support St. Luke’s Outreach ministries. The group practices once each month, and plays on the third Sunday of each month during the season. Worship Support Team FormingLove worship at St. Luke’s and want to find a way to be helpful in the weekly offerings, but don’t necessarily consider yourself a musician? Do you like to keep things organized, care about details that ‘make all the difference’, and like to work in the background? The newly forming Worship Support Team might be a place of satisfying involvement for you! This team looks after Sunday morning details – making sure that paraments are on pulpit and table as well as cared for when stored, see that candelabras are clean and ready for use, that candles are stocked, etc. and etc. Serve weekly, monthly, or as your schedule allows. Our Worship Stage Team Needs You!There are lots of moving parts to our worship services – and plenty of wonderful people playing a variety of roles. Behind the scenes are the opportunities for individuals to serve as stage managers and stage technicians. These folks help direct traffic and make sure technical matters are not overlooked in the midst of all the spiritual and musical blessings of worship! ST. LUKE’S CHILDREN’S MUSIC PROGRAM REHEARSAL SCHEDULE 2014/2015 (ALL rehearsals are in Room E208 and/or E207, 2nd floor)

Music activities include movement, playing rhythm instruments, and singing sacred songs. This youngest group of musicians offers songs two to three times per season in the Sanctuary, participates on Christmas Eve at the 3:00PM Service, and leads music for “The Mini-Track,” preschool worship service.

ELEMENTARY MUSIC PROGRAMGrades K – 4 Sundays, 10:10-11:00AM (Begins Aug. 24)

Young musicians are divided into two groups: K-2 & 3-4. Music activities include singing, movement and an instrumental program: Orff instruments, Boomwhackers and choir chimes. This group of musicians sings regularly in the Sanctuary on the second Sunday of the month throughout the season and participates at the 3:00PM

Christmas Eve Service. Older singers, Grades 3 and 4, sing in the Annual Christmas Concert with the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and Orchestra. An annual children’s musical is scheduled for the year, too!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SINGERS2 Options: Sundays, 10:20 – 11:00AM, Grades 5 – 6Tuesdays, 7:15 – 8:00PM Grades 5 – 8(Begins Sunday, Aug. 24 & Tuesday, Aug. 26)

This is an outstanding group of youth singers who participate regularly in worship services the second Sunday of the month and concerts in the St. Luke’s Sanctuary.

THE CHORISTERSA select group of singers, Grades 3 – 8 (treble voices)Tuesdays, 6:15 – 7:15PM (Begins Aug. 26)

This group of musicians makes a strong commitment to attending rehearsals and to singing

more advanced music in the Sanctuary worship services and sings at the Annual Christmas Concert with the St. Luke’s Chancel Choir and Orchestra. Attendance at Voice for Life is strongly encouraged in order to make progress and contribute to the group. Members of this group are also given the opportunity to receive additional training through the RSCM St. Louis Music Course, usually held the last week of July. VOICE for LIFEGrades 3 – 8Tuesdays, 5:45 – 6:15PM (Begins Aug. 26)

This is a nationally recognized program of instruction for music theory, ear training, music history, church history, hymnology, and overall musical training. Participants can earn Royal School Church Music ribbons and medals. The program is open to any singer who participates in the Tuesday evening program – Middle School Singers and The Choristers.

SUNDAY MORNING OPTIONS:

Preschool at 9:15 & 10:45There’s no better way to start a year than to recalibrate and refocus, so that’s what we’re doing for August. We are spending the entire month introducing the three basic truths to our preschoolers and their parents. We want all three of them to be front and center so everyone (you included) can be reminded what the goal is. Do you remember the goal? We want every child to know God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever. And, we want them to embrace it firmly in their little hearts.

We’ll start the month off by reminding preschoolers that GOD MADE THEM. God made each little eyelash and each little freckle, and that makes them so very special. Then they’ll hear how much God loves them and has a plan for each and every one of them just as God had a plan for Abraham. In fact, God will always seek them out just as the shepherd looks to find the lost sheep. Finally, they’ll hear the story of Zacchaeus and how Jesus loved him no matter what. He wanted to be Zacchaeus’ friend forever. Jesus wants to be our friend forever too. Our preschoolers will finish up the month with a fun day of review of all three basic truths to make sure they’re ready for the year ahead. Elementary at 9:15 & 10:45 If a painting has a few flaws, those are pretty easy to overlook. But people will do and say things that frustrate, anger or hurt us. People—especially those who have some level of authority—may ask us to do something we don’t want to do, or even worse, they may tell us not to do something we really want to do.

In fact, if you think about people only in terms of how they cooperate with what you want, it’s pretty much impossible to show respect. But if we stop and look at people with the knowledge that God made them, then we see things very differently. Suddenly, we can realize two incredible ideas.First, that God made them. Second, that God put

them exactly where God wants them to be.During August, we’re talking about respect—showing others they are important by what you say and do. Honestly, it’s easy to respect a flawed painting when you value the person who made it. But when it comes to respecting people, it gets a bit messier. This month our memory verse comes from 1 Peter 2:17. It just says, “SHOW PROPER RESPECT TO EVERYONE.” (NIrV) Pretty simple.

Nursing Mothers Room AvailableFor the convenience of new mothers in our congregation, we have a nursing room, located off the East Passage, in room E126. It can be accessed directly from the East Passage or through the childcare nursery room it adjoins. The room is equipped with rocking chairs and a television live-streaming the worship service from the Sanctuary. It is open to all who need it on Sunday mornings. Please ask an usher if you need assistance locating it.

Weekday Preschool & PDOWe provide an opportunity for children of all ability levels to relate socially to each other, learn from each other and play together. In addition to skill development, our philosophy is that the tolerance and acceptance of people with differences begins at an early age. PreschoolClasses (9AM-1PM) for three- to five-year-olds. All teachers are experienced, qualified, and strive to maintain strong relationships with the children and their families. Preschool offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum where children may grow socially, creatively, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Children must be three years old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

Parents’ Day OutClasses (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by 9/1/2014 to enroll for the 2014-2015 school year.

What is an Emerging Adult? You might be wondering, “What is an Emerging Adult”? At St. Luke’s, we use this term to encompass three distinct groups: 11th and 12th grade students, college students, and post-college age young adults.

Older high school students have very different needs from underclassmen. As we begin to specifically focus on this group, we want to create a space where students can wrestle with tough questions and truly feel ownership over their faith in Christ.

College students are in one of the most transitional phases a person will experience. Everything is subject to change—and we get the opportunity to walk side by side with our college students during these transitions. Presence and flexibility are the cornerstone of this ministry.

Young Adults are one of our most diverse groups. Spanning from twenty-one to mid-thirties, this group includes singles, married couples, parents, and everything in between. This diversity makes for rich community and bountiful opportunities to do ministry that is outside the box.

Ministry with Emerging Adults is constantly evolving—and that’s an exciting thing! If you want to be a part of building something new here at St. Luke’s, or if you just want to find out more, contact me.

In her book Stitches, Anne Lamott writes: “... in

the cold wind, if you can lean against others, none of you will blow away. You keep each other from falling or help each other get back up. Someone holds out a hand ... or you may hold out a hand, and a person in need reaches for it and hangs on.” On August 19 a new support group for those caring for loved ones will meet (and the third Tuesday of each month after that) in the Main Office Conference Room. Imagine for a moment: You have just experienced some type of loss, the death of a loved one, loss of a job, loss of a good friend, the end of a marriage. You are in search of answers, support, just something more. You decide to go to church. You do your research, maybe ask a few friends to make a recommendation. The next Sunday you show up at St. Luke’s. Now, imagine you are in the parking lot, unsure, confused, wondering if you will be welcomed. Everything that happens next may impact whether or not you give God a chance.

How we as a faith community respond to guests can make all the difference. This year, we have focused on hospitality and welcoming guests and members. Under the direction of Hospitality Commission Chairs Bev Gallagher and Stephanie Eckert we have even renamed this ministry Second Mile Ministry, based on Matthew 5:41. “If anyone compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” In Jesus’ time, Roman soldiers occupied the Promised Land. They could force civilians to carry their loads for up to one mile. How the Jewish people must have resented it! But the law limited the requirement to only one mile. Jesus suggests that they go the extra mile: that they give more than expected – regardless of the circumstances.

Under the leadership of long time members and seasoned servants, Rick & Janet Barb, our parking lot leaders, greeters, ushers, guides, section hosts, coffee/refreshment, welcome center and office volunteers all create a culture of welcome that goes beyond expectations.

Section Host Maria Blake said she has come to know guests at the 10:45AM service and members by sight and name, and loves to greet them as friends as they come

into worship each Sunday. Bev & Tim Gallagher have been greeting for over 20 years. “Greeting is the best job at the church…offering people coming through the doors a genuine smile, pleasant greeting and a warm handshake… Priceless!” Rosy Brownell says the secret is in being genuine. “Style attracts, relationships retain,” says Matt Russell.

So what if you are not actively serving on the Second Mile team? You can still exceed expectations: Say hello. Sit in the middle of a pew – or watch the aisles as the service begins and look for those looking for a seat – welcome someone to sit with you! Surprise (and cheer) someone with your hospitality.

Sierra Leone Winter Mission Trips Need Heath/Education WorkersSierra Leone Partners (Health and Education) will take teams to work with UMC health and education leaders in Sierra Leone, West Africa as they grapple with life issues in delivery of health care and primary education. Fifteen-day trips (with options of a shorter 10-day experience) will leave Indianapolis on January 15 and January 29. Health Teams need persons with teaching experience such as nurses, hospital/practice administrators, physicians, ultrasound and lab techs and other allied health care professionals. Also needed are those with experience in medical equipment and facilities maintenance. INTRODUCTION TO DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDYSome students have read the Bible, but haven’t really studied it. There’s a difference. Others find the Bible confusing and overwhelming to read alone. Others haven’t read scripture since elementary school. Still others seek a way to connect with new friends in a conversation that has some substance.

Disciple Fast Track Bible Study is a great, fun way to grow in your faith, meet new friends and learn more about the Bible in a four-part set of classes. Starting with Disciple I Fast Track: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, participants engage in a life-transforming 24-week, 75-minute class that offers an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Besides 12 classes in Fall and 12 in Winter, the class requires a commitment to 20-30 minutes of daily reading. No previous Bible knowledge is necessary. You will read 60% of the Bible. At the end of this class you will know Bible basics from beginning to end, have new friends and no doubt, will grow stronger in your own faith.

“I took Disciple because I knew I did not know much about the Bible,” one participant said. “Now, I understand the stories in the scriptures and how they all fit together. I get so much more out of the sermon and songs in worship. My faith has grown so much. And, the friendships I made in my group are very important to me!”

Participants take Disciple I as a prerequisite to the other three studies. After Disciple I, the other levels may be taken in any order. There is even an online option!

REGISTRATIONRegister now to participate in a Disciple Bible study in September. There will be many choices for all four levels of this popular Bible study program in the Fast Track and the Traditional (longer) version. See each entry for time, date and place for each class.

All Disciple Fast Track Bible Study classes will begin after Labor Day and run through the week before Thanksgiving. They will break and begin again in January and finish in March. When St. Luke’s leaders set out in 2013 to craft a vision for the next five years for this congregation, they got an unexpected boost

from an event that inspired and better equipped them to lead the process: the Global Leadership Summit. As a result, this year, they hope to double enrollment of participants from St. Luke’s.

Mark and Judi Hosfeld are leading a charge to sign up 200 leaders this year for the Global Leadership Summit, 8:30AM-5:30PM, Aug. 14-15, Grace Church, Noblesville, IN. (A $250 value, St. Luke’s guests can register for $129).

The Global Leadership Summit is a two-day, world-class leadership event experienced by more than 170,000 leaders around the world, representing more than 14,000 churches. It’s telecast live from Willow Creek’s campus (near Chicago) every August. This event is crafted to infuse vision, skill development and inspiration for leaders for the transformation of local congregations.

“I remember the first morning being blown away by the speakers and knowing I can improve my own leadership capabilities from every one of these speakers,” said Tom Lange, St. Luke’s volunteer representative to Fox Hill Elementary outreach efforts. A Kenyan clergyman, who described a leadership practice called “viral leadership,” told the participants

that he surrounded himself with emerging leaders, who were then exposed first-hand to his vision— and learning how to implement it “on the job.” Lange came back from the event and adapted his own leadership style in his work at Eli Lilly & Co., until his retirement.

“Now I’m using what I learned in volunteer capacities,” he said.

“I have to say how empowered I felt when it was over,” said Jilliane Pruiett, systems administrator at St. Luke’s, who came home and enrolled in a Master’s program to study organizational development, even as she continues her position at St. Luke’s.

Rob Wineland, CEO of a local company, came back from the event and trained his staff on some of the leadership techniques he learned for businesses. He plans to bring his leadership team to this year’s summit.

The opportunity to learn leadership skills in a faith-based context appeals to the Hosfelds who will attend for the first time this year. Registration includes all conference materials and break refreshments. Hosfelds will invite the entire group of participants from St. Luke’s to a pre-event gathering on what to expect and a post-event gathering to strategize on how to apply what is learned at St. Luke’s.
