Then, the collection of publications, newspa -
pers and printed medias allowed us to create
a first map on the topic. The last two steps
consist in a exploration both of the web a of
our home countries and cultures. This last
method gave us a wider field of vision and
took advantage of our dierent perceptions
and backgrounds. In all these four cases, we
kept in mind that a welcoming sign is not
always obvious. We tried not to underesti -mate any kind of message, even though it
was weak.
M atching our datas during these twoweeks, we began to draw a path, andto get a precise idea about the notion of wel -
coming and the several forms it can show.
Indeed, we admitted at a certain point, that
the welcoming could be generated through a
message, but also a sign, a word, and even a
shape or a simple trace on the wall. It can be
cultural, social, artistic and sometime concep -
tual. More than a notion, its a state of mind,
an attitude that can be spotted in almost every
type of media, physical or not.
In a world where communication increase eve -
ryday, cultural identities are more and morerelayed by the technologies, and distances are
shortened by the medias and the progress,
welcoming has become a central issue, but
also an essential tool for the new experiences
our this world provide us. therefore, we can ex -
pect this notion to change and materialize into
new approaches and values, probably more
adapted to our everyday mutations.
For all of us in the group, the meaning of wel -coming is strongly linked with a positive value,an exchange, and a very human concept. Its about
a connection between the people, their environ -
ment and therefore, the things surrounding them.
The notions of personal spheres and property -
physical or intellectual - are the core of this issue.
The multiple ways of creating interactions and
relationships between beings and things, places,
signs or cultures are its language. Then, in orderto analyze the welcoming process, we decided
to look around through dierent medias, experi -
ences and gestures surrounding us and speaking
about it.
T hus, four main axes could emerge at the verybeginning of the study. The acquisition of ma -terial infos and images in situ was the first step.
The Brave New World...

You move into a new city, for life, for va -cation, for whatever. You dont know thenew city. You have just the tourist guide and
nothing more. You dont know, where is the

to go out. Sometimes you wish that there is
somebody supporting you. Being there for

about their identity, based on the cultural

In order to celebrate this historical event, Provincia di

In some areas in Paris there is a new tradition going on.Four or five arabic restaurants now provide an open freecouscous once or twice a week. Directly inspired of the ar -
abic hospitality and traditions for welcoming the stranger,
this activity has now reached a lot of several cultural and
social environments. People from completely dierent
backgrounds join themselves every week around this gen -erous meal, and share opinions, tastes or simply thoughts
about their city or cultures. Indeed, it's a very human value
to gather around a dinner and share the food with un -
known people; and it's also a way to transmit a cultural her -
itage despite economic and profits obligations we live in.

C ritical Mass is a bicycle event, typically held everylast friday of the month in more than 300 cities allo -ver the world. Founded in San Francisco, the purpose of
this event was to draw attention on the problem of wel -
coming bikes in the city. Seen like a "protest by cyclist
reclaiming the streets", these events should be viewed
as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not
as protests or organized demonstrations agreeing to
Critical Mass participants. This organization diers from
many others in its rhizomal - rather than hierarchical -
structure, and therefore, was often called an "organized
coincidence". The routes are decided spontaneously
and the movement is free from association costs and
hierarchical leadership. The only requirement is to get a
sufficient "critical mass" to ride
