JANET Talk• We have developed a voice and
collaboration tool including:– Conference Bridging (for all applications)– Video, Shared Whiteboard, application
sharing, IM chat – PSTN breakout (cheaper than SKYPE – mostly!)
• Post-pay and pre-pay billing options• Standards based (SIP) desktop client with a
searchable central register• Capable of handling 50,000 users• Managed on an organisational basis

JANET Talk• JANET Talk can be used on or off campus
by any user “linked” with a JANET connected organisation
• JANET Talk is not a telephony replacement and wont integrate with campus kit…but it is SIP
• Supports both public and private users• Based around a desktop client (or a SIP
phone / client) • CODEC and bandwidth can be altered to
reflect connection speeds

• Just about to launch a 12 month no cost trial of JANET Talk

• 110 trial sites, from HE, FE, Research, Schools, support organisations and LA representatives
• HE = 42 • Sch = 1• FE = 40• Other = 26 (includes RBC’s, RSC’s,
LEA’s and service organisations• Over 7000 users

JANET Talk Uses
• Uses include:– multi-site distance learning for UHI, – FE college use while moving buildings– ECMWF remote site comms– Linking together sites working on a
northsea wind farm project

Support and management
• Nominated Admin contact at each site– Adding and Removing users– Adding and removing features– First level fault point of contact– JANET point of contact
• JANET Service desk act as liaison point for faults

Trial site Requirements
• Non really, apart from….– Opening up packet filters and ports to one
core IP address– Providing an admin contact who will
distribute and manage JANET Talk locally– Sign up to the trial T’s & C’s– Provide feedback during the trial

What else are we doing?
• Looking at the wider picture of telephony on JANET
• Working with Nominet - ENUM• Understanding if and how we can provide
centrally managed telephony services• Understanding how we can support mobile
clients for JANET Talk• We can do lots and lots, but there needs to
be a clear business case
