The Core Technologies are considered to be the "basic building blocks" from which all technology systems are created. They include:

PresenterPresentation NotesElectrical technology is where electricity is required to do work. Electricity is generated and sent to homes, schools, and hospitals usually be used to operate machinery or lighting. Most homes use 110 to 240 volts of electricity.

PresenterPresentation NotesUnlike electricity, which generates and uses higher voltages, electronic technology uses very low voltage. Many electronic devices use batteries to provide its power. When asked what is the difference between electricity and electronics, one could say about 100 volts.

PresenterPresentation NotesStructural technology does not typically show any motion or movement. Structural technology must accommodate the movement or stresses it is placed on an apparatus or architecture created by humans. The movement maybe created by winds acting on a high-rise building or a train crossing a bridge. Each of these movements create tension on the object that the the material and the design must support.

The technology of using fluid, either gaseous (pneumatics) or liquid (hydraulic) to apply force or
to transport.
Applications
Air brakes on a truck, tires on a car, airfoils on an airplane, warm air heating ducts and fan in a building, hydraulic jack, plumbing in a school, gasoline pump

PresenterPresentation NotesFluid technology or hydraulics requires a liquid under pressure to do work. Pushing fluids through a tube at one end will move the fluids through the tubes to do work at the other end of the tube. Fluids can be used to lift or move heavy objects because fluids do not compress. Pneumatic systems work the same way but air does compress so it needs a different application to be efficient.

PresenterPresentation NotesOptical technology uses light to do the work. The scanner reading a barcode at a supermarket or an x-ray or an alarm used during bowling to tell the scoring machine if you've crossed the line are all optical technology applications.

An oven used to cook a meal or a furnace to heat a home are thermal technology. Greenhouses are examples that get overlooked when thinking of thermal technology.

PresenterPresentation NotesIn summary there are nine core technologies covered extensively in the curriculum in Maryland. Core technologies are the systems that do all the work. From moving fluids through one's body during surgery, to dissolving cataracts, from lifting heavy objects, to detecting voltage drops in a system. The nine core technologies are the drones of the technological colony.
