About the workshop
This workshop deals with the Introduction to Spoken
Tutorial, its components, significance and application
in teaching and learning.
It will also provide a hands-on-experience to the
participants on how to write a script and create
(record, narrate and dub) a Spoken Tutorial.
This workshop aims to equip each participant with the
know-how to create a Spoken Tutorial on their own.

Introduction to Spoken Tutorial
Learning is more effective when animation and
narration are presented simultaneously
Audio-video demonstrations can illustrate features
with maximum clarity

Spoken Tutorial refers to explaining a computer based
activity with a screencast and a narration.
The screencasting software captures all the activities
on the screen along with the narration and plays it
back as a movie.
This movie is called a Spoken Tutorial.
What is a Spoken Tutorial

There are two major components for creating a
Spoken Tutorial
1. Scripting
2.Recording
Screencasting
Narration

WHAT IS A SCRIPT
A script is a written document containing the
narration of the Spoken Tutorial.

HOW TO WRITE A SCRIPT
1. Identify the need
Why are you making this tutorial? What do you want the
user/viewer to learn through this tutorial?
Mention the learning objective at the beginning of the script
Eg- To explain how to plot 2D graphs using Scilab
While writing a script for a Spoken Tutorial,
it is a good idea to follow these steps

2. Preparation before writing the script
Choose a software for a spoken tutorial that you are
conversant with
If you do not know much, then familiarise yourself with
the features you are going to demonstrate in the spokentutorial
Test all the features you are going to use and confirm to
check their applications
Spend enough time trying and testing the software indetail beforehand. This way, you will know all the
limitations of the software
Eg- To demonstrate how to construct a Parallelogram
given 2 Sides and the Angle between using Geogebra

3. Focus on the topicthat you want to demonstrate Choose one topic and explain it well Make a series of tutorials if required to talk about each
sub-topic separately
These can be woven into a study plan for that topic
Eg of a study plan- How to construct a Parallelogram given 2 Sides and the Angle
between
How to calculate the Area of a Parallelogram constructed from 2Sides and the Angle between How to construct a Parallelogram given 2 Sides and the Height

4. Choice of words
Use short sentences Use simple words avoid jargon Use a combination of screencast and slides
Be specific. Do not say, Go here and click this. Insteadsay, Go to the top left-hand corner of the screen. Click
on File and select New

HOW TO WRITE A SCRIPT
5. Follow a pedagogical approach while writing the script Give a brief introduction of the topic Mention the OS compatibility Mention the system requirements, if any, for that
software Write all the steps from the beginning to the end. Dont
leave anything to imagination or assumption

6. Follow a pedagogical approach while writing the script If any prerequisite knowledge is necessary in order to
understand this spoken tutorial, mention it
Ideally, this should be available as another spoken tutorial
If the spoken tutorial involves downloads from differentwebsites, show screen-shots of those websites
Remember, this is a visual medium, hence SHOW This will help in case of difficulty in understanding the
pronunciation or to avoid spelling mistakes
Eg website names or commands

7. Follow a pedagogical approach while writing the scriptIf you are going to make a series of tutorials on a single
topic, include the first 3 points in the first tutorial of the
series. You need not repeat it in the subsequent tutorials
for that series

HOW TO WRITE A SCRIPT
8. Review the script for accuracy and clarity Ask a novice to verify the correctness of your script by
actually trying it
Ask the novice to try the script without anyones
(including yourself) help The script should be improved until the novice can follow
the script without any help

9. Review the script for grammar
It is essential to proof-read the script to rectify any
grammatical mistakes before recording

HOW TO WRITE A SCRIPT
10. Time duration for a Spoken Tutorial
Ideally, restrict the time of a spoken tutorial to 10
minutes
This is an average attention span time and most of the
information given around 10 minutes will be retained
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
18/40
HOW TO WRITE A SCRIPT
11. Spoken Tutorial File-size Ideally, try to restrict the file-size of a spoken tutorial to
around 10MB, which would translate to 1MB per minute
This is ideal for streaming videos even if the bandwidth is
low. Try to work around this ratio while setting therecording parameters of the screencasting software

This kind of template will help the creator to
understand the process very clearly.
S/he can easily create the Spoken Tutorial by
following the Visual Cues and Narrations.

NARRATION
For Recording
All you need is a laptop/desktop, a headphone with mic input
and a screencasting software.
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
23/40
NARRATION
1. Speaking
Impart instructions politely and with clarity
Do not give orders be friendly Remember to make the spoken tutorial a pleasant
experience for the user
Speak naturally. Everybody has an accent and its okay.
Do not attempt to put on an artificial accent
Remember to speak clearly and slowly

NARRATION
2. Tips to cut out external noise
Ideally, record in a closed room with minimum
disturbance Close the windows to cut out the noise from birds, traffic
and construction
Switching off the fan helps in reducing the hissing sound
while recording
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
25/40
NARRATION
3. Do a few dummy recordings for 2-3 mins to finalise the
recording parameters
This will help you to predict the end file-size This exercise will also help you to check the clarity of the
audio narration and the quality of the video
Full-length dummy narrations will help you to improve
the tone of your voice and pronunciation
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
26/40
NARRATION
4. Final narration
Ideally, try to record the whole tutorial in one go
This will keep the tone of your voice uniform It will also reduce the time you spend in editing
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
27/40
NARRATION
5. While dubbing
If possible, remove the original audio stream completely
If not possible, dub from the original recording it willhave only one more audio stream apart from yours
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
28/40
NARRATION
6. While dubbing, make sure that
The audio-video synchronisation is not affected
The meaning of the original narration does not change File size remains approximately same Recording dimensions match those of the original tutorial
8/2/2019 Creation Workshop
29/40
SCREENCASTING
While capturing, make sure that
The activity displayed on the screen and the corresponding
cursor movement are in sync with the audio
Select a suitable capture area
The cursor can be utilized to highlight the spoken text Irrelevant movement of the cursor should be avoided as it
may cause distraction
If you commit a mistake while using the software during the
recording, you may choose to explain the mistake as well,to the viewer. This will help the viewer to understand the
problem and the possible solution for the problem

Camstudio and recordMyDesktop capture the screen and
saves the movie in AVI and OGV formats.
Generally, the AVI file-size is very large. To reduce the file-size
and to convert the AVI file into a WMV file, one needs to usean editing software or video convertor
Windows Movie Maker is an editing software that is available
for all the latest Windows versions. Audacity is an audio
recording software that can be used for dubbing purposes.
A net-search will provide other video convertors one can use in
order to convert the AVI file into WMV, MOV and other file
formats.
