World Youth Day/Priesthood Sunday The coming weeks ahead are going to be filled once more with busy-ness and insanity around these parts. Between Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, the Parish Mission, the Presidential Election, Taste of O’Toole, St. Lawrence O’Toole’s feast day, the Craft Show, Thanksgiving, AND more, November tends to be one of the busiest months of the year. Yet it’s also a time when we are asked to keep remembering those who have died this past year, and it always seems like that list gets longer and longer each year. On more positive notes, this last weekend in October is always a dual celebration of World Youth Day and Priesthood Sunday. It’s an interesting combination as we need to continue to pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We particularly should be praying for more young people to listen to God’s voice. His booming voice truly does speak louder than any other noise we hear, yet the worldly noise around us seems to distract us from listening to Him. I have had a magazine I received from Marist High School sitting on my desk for the past two weeks or so. The front cover is a collage of pictures of many of the Marist brothers who served at the Chicago campus over 50 years of service. My fun is to try to name as many of them as possible. So indeed I have written their names on the cover over their pictures. I am fully aware that many of them are deceased, and I know there are a few missing from the collage, too. I must admit that I had some very good teachers when I was at Marist. Many of the brothers that I remember were not even my teachers in class, but I know that there were more than a few who made a great impression on my life and my faith. Sure, I came to listen to God’s voice leading me to be ordained in the footsteps of the Apostles, but the brothers of Marist, following the rule of living from the great St. Marcelin Champgnat, continue to teach young men and women how to live Christian lives and how to use the knowledge God has given them for the advancement of humanity. PRAY. PRAY. PRAY. Ask the master of the harvest to send out more laborers into the vineyard. Peace and rest for all Fr. Michael Novick

Living Stewardship October 28, 2012 ~~ 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (MARK 10:52) Sight is just one of the many gifts that God has given to us. Like all of our basic senses and talents, sight is a gift we often take for granted. We pat ourselves on the back for our accomplishments, forgetting that whatever we do, we do with the gifts that God has given to us.

The priest says, “Lift up your hearts.” We say, “We lift them up to the Lord.” In the Mass, we lift or raise up our hearts to God. We lift up our offering to God. And that offering is the self-sacrificing love of Jesus Christ. We join him and, because we are in him, we can lift ourselves up to God. We are part of the one offering, the one sacrifice. We can — and sometimes do — stay stuck in our daily struggles, temptations, and even sins. In the

Mass we break free. In Jesus lifted high on the cross, we lift up our hearts, our very selves. We break free of the gravity of sin and death and doubt.

If you became blind would you ever think about seeing a priest? Christ’s priesthood, today’s first

reading and Gospel passage indicate, cures both physical and

spiritual blindness.

Think about a time during the Liturgy of the Word when your eyes were opened, providing you with an essential insight

which you later put into practice. How did this make

you feel?

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY’S MONTHLY FOOD COLLECTION A reminder to all parishioners that next weekend, November 3 & 4, is our St. Vincent de Paul Society’s

Monthly Food Drive. On the first weekends of the month, the St. Vincent de Paul Society asks for your help with donations of food to help keep our pantry shelves full. Any non-perishable food items, as well as paper and soap

products are greatly needed. Be it one item or a bag full, all will be used. We have over 100 families coming every month, and it is because of your continued support and generosity that we are able to continue to feed and care for these families in need. May God Bless you as you carry out God’s teachings to care for those less fortunate. ~~ St. Lawrence O’Toole St. Vincent de Paul Society

RIGHT TO LIFE NEWS Monthly Witness and Prayer Vigil

Saturday, November 3, 10:00 AM—12:00 PM. Please join us if you can, even if only for part of the time. This prayer vigil will be held along the public sidewalk extending from 14470 LaGrange Rd, Orland Park.

The American Jesuit scholar Father John Courtney Murray once said that “Anyone who really believes in God must set God, and the truth of God, above all other considerations.” (4) Here’s what that means. Catholic public officials who take God seriously cannot support laws that attack human dignity without lying to themselves, misleading others and abusing the faith of their fellow Catholics. God will demand an accounting. Catholic doctors who take God seriously cannot do procedures, prescribe drugs or support health policies that attack the sanctity of unborn children or the elderly; or that undermine the dignity of human sexuality and the family. God will demand an accounting. And Catholic citizens who take God seriously cannot claim to love their Church, and then ignore her counsel on vital public issues that shape our nation’s life. God will demand an accounting. As individuals, we can claim to believe whatever we want. We can posture, and rationalize our choices, and make alibis with each other all day long — but no excuse for our lack of honesty and zeal will work with the God who made us. God knows our hearts better than we do. If we don’t conform our hearts and actions to the faith we claim to believe, we’re only fooling ourselves.

Excerpts from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. “A Thread for Weaving Joy”, Cardinal O’Connor Conference on Life, January 22, 2012, Washington, DC

The Ministry of Care Team cannot thank so many of you enough! The St. Lawrence O’Toole Parishioners, Staff, Our Pastor Father Mike and the Ministry of Care members who attended, baked for and assisted us in managing this function helped make it a great event. A special acknowledgement to Eileen Fuhrmann for her ideas, guidance and efforts in steering this event. The Fall Fun Fair response was WONDERFUL. The Ministry of Care Team now has $372.50 in our account. How? By serving hot dogs and receiving comments such as WOW these dog are something special. On the other hand the aroma of the three pounds of chopped onions will remain with us for ever and ever. These funds will be used to purchase crosses, photo identification cards, guide books for new ministry members and to assist those who are not able to afford the necessary fees for appropriate guidance and instructions. Watching family members enjoy the several games offered, the painting of pumpkins, the little ones kicking large balls around and simply enjoying their hotdogs and chips on the grass was very touching. From the Ministry of Care Team ... Thank You and God Bless!
