CV of Er Sourabh Manuja
Mr. Manuja has more than fourteen years of work experience in field of
Environmental Engineering. He has experience of working on development of
Greenhouse gas emission model for emission inventory and mitigation strategies in
the waste sector; formulating workplans to reduce short lived climate pollutants for
waste sector for urban local body (ULB), Audit of mechanized road sweeping
operations for ULBs, Audits of Municipal Solid Waste Management and Sanitation
Infrastructure for ULBs, detailed project report preparation for solid waste
management for cities; designing of water and wastewater treatment plants using
submerged aerobic fixed film (SAFF), moving bed biological reactor (MBBR), bio towers and anaerobic
digester technology. He has also worked on solid liquid separation through conventional sedimentation as well
as high rate solid liquid separation technologies like tube settlers, plate settlers and fly ash membrane filters.
He has been instrumental in designing pretreatment units for desalination plants with high rate settling units.
He had also been involved in environmental impact assessment studies for various infrastructure projects and
evaluated performance of effluent treatment plant. He has published 31 research papers in journals, seminars
and conferences and also authored chapters in five different books. Prior to starting Globa; Green
Envirosystems, he had worked for The Energy and Resources Institute, MM Aqua Technologies Limited,
Tetra Tech (India) Limited, and Global Environmental Control Systems. He has a B.Tech (Environmental
Engineer) from Gautam Buddh Technical University (formerly U.P.T.U.) and M. Tech (Environmental
Science and Engineering) from JMI University, New Delhi. He has been a scholar of U.P.T.U. and JMI
University during his entire course of education.

Dhairya Dairy LLP, Gorakhpur- he was involved in formulating EMP for the dairy industry having raw
milk demand of 20000 liters per day and prepare Milk, Chhachh and Paneer. He was involved in
primary assessment of Industry and derive the wastewater treatment plant and management of
hazardous waste expected to be released from the industry during operations.
Shri Radha Palash-Phase 1- Govardhan, Mathura- he was involved in EMP preparation for this housing
society and formulated rainwater harvesting system, STP design, solid waste management system, zero
liquid discharge concept and EMP for construction, operations and post cooperation phase.

waste management and sanitation infrastructure in Model wards of North Delhi Municipal Corporation,

Corporation respectively. The responsibilities involved selection of audit team, preparing questionnaires
incorporating all three waste management rules 2016, mobilizing the team on field along with an audit

(May 2019- June 2019) Three day Training of CETP operators on operations and Issues related to
CETP (11 – 13 June 2019). As a principle investigator involved in arranging faculty from JMI
University, AMU and TERI SAS along with Industries working in O&M of ETPs. He was also the
faculty for two of the lectures including Basics of reactor design for ETPs on day 01 and Designing of
CETPs on day 02. The training program was funded by CPCB.
(January 2019- August 2019) Principle investigator for used beverage carton management study in
South Asia covering total 23 cities. Funded by Tetrapak India Pvt Limited with an objective to make
product sustainable. He has been incharge of conducting surveys in 23 cities in South Asia and has
travelled to cities of Colombo, Kathmandu and Dhaka (outside India) and Shimla, Lucknow, Delhi and
Faridabad to train the local partners and access the situation of UBC management in these cities. He has
been handling a team of 05 people working under the project and travelling to various cities and
assessing the UBC management scenario. He is also involved in analyzing the quantum of UBC
recycled in these cities and writing the concerned reports.
(April 2019 -May 2019) Principle investigator for carrying our waste characterization study for waste
received from Gurugram at Bhandwari landfill site. The role was to conduct rekey survey of site and
access the requirements for safety and supplies and purchase the same for field staff. Responsibilities
also involved selecting and hiring interns and consultants to execute the analysis at site with suitable
qualifications. He also did statistical analysis of data obtained and wrote a report on the findings.The
ultimate aim was to conduct the sampling for 4 days at Bhnadwari and statistically analyse the outputs
for establishing waste characteristics reaching dumpsite. The team was trained by waste characterization
expert from SCS engineers (US) and project was funded by Abt associates (USA) under a subcontract
from USEPA.
(December 2018- ongoing): NAMA phase II funded by GIZ India as a team member and responsible for
modelling baseline emissions and develop strategies to reduce emissions from cities of Varanasi and
Panjim under the study. He has been involved in report writing for baseline emission and running
SWEET ver 2.1 for both cities. He also undertook trainings of GIZ team on SWEET tool as a part of the
study.
Team member for organizing 06 Solid waste management exposure workshops in three urban clusters
(Aligarh, Agra and Jhansi) in the state of Uttar Pradesh; under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Phase
III (2018-19) in the month of November and December 2018. The involvements were to train the
participants on three topics 1) Current scenario of waste management in India, 2) “Rules and regulations
for waste management in India and 3) Decentralized treatment of organic waste. The workshops were
attended by more than 240 participants across various cities. Prepared case study for Aligarh Cluster by
gathering data and information from operators for field visit manual. Also helped PI of the project in
freezing the dates for workshops and venue with the State Urban Swachh Bharat Mission secretariat in
Lucknow. This project was funded by National Institute of Urban Affairs under Ministry of Housing
and Urban Affairs
(August 2018-December 2019; May 2019 - ongoing) Principle investigator for conducting independent

(July 2018 - January 2019) Co- Principle investigator for development of a market based mechanism for
municipal solid waste sector in India. Involved as a Sr technical expert and looking into various
activities like rapid need assessment, assessment of policy with respect to gaps that can be filled through
a MBI. Also was involved in preparing scoping report of the project. This project also involves
coordinating and working with a consortium of Perspectives, IL&FS and BVRio with TERI in lead role.
Funded by The World Bank and looked after by Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change.
Was also involved in making presentations of the project at various phases to the MoEFCC and
conducting stakeholder workshops to understand perspectives.
(July 2018- December 2018) Team member for development of public private partnership for disaster
risk mitigation in municipal solid waste sector for city of Cuttak. Was responsible for conceptualizing
and building a plan for execution of a pilot at BSNL colony in Cuttack (accommodating about 150
families). The plan involved segregated waste collection, decentralized treatment of organics and setting
up a material recycling activity, along with roles of various actors including Municipal Corporation,
private partner and community. Funded by Abt Associates, U.S.A.
Co-Principle investigator for conducting Independent Assessment/ Monitoring of Waste Collection
System in East Delhi Municipal Corporation Area. Primarily responsible for development and testing of
questionnaire for various stakeholders, conducting survey in selected colonies to identify gaps in the
collection system. Also was responsible for selection and hiring interns in the area to assist in smooth
execution of the survey.
Team member for “study to test, operationalize preventive approaches for chronic kidney disease of
uncertain etiology (CKDu) in Andhra Pradesh- Enlisted parameters for testing water and their testing
standards for collecting quotes from various NaBL laboratories.
Co-Principle investigator for a project on short lived climate pollutant (SLCP) reduction from Municipal
solid waste initiative for The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). He was involved in data
collection and assessment of baseline emissions and alternate scenario emissions from solid waste
management in East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and Coimbatore using solid waste emission
estimation tool (SWEET). He has also been reviewer of SWEET version 1.0 and version 2.0 and
OrgaEcs version 1.0 and version 2.0 for USEPA. He has been closely involved with EDMC for
development of workplan for EDMC to reduce SLCPs from waste management. He has been also

involved in looking after the CCAC India network cities and conducting webinars for the network. He
was also involved in conducting workshops at Gurgaon and East Delhi for network and EDMC
respectively. He has also conducted site visits of network cities to South Delhi and Pune to showcase

Co Principle Investigator for a three day workshop on environmental exposure assessment and health
research funded by MoHFW, held from 30 October 2017 – 02 November 2017 at TERI, New Delhi.
Given training to participants on Water quality modeling with an aim to bridge environmental exposure
assessment and health research, this module covered broadly the various types of pollutants in water,
their impacts on environment and further linkages with human health. They were trained on using the
mass balance approach to derive an expression to evaluate the concentration curves with respect to the
travel distance, for point as well as area sources of pollution. The participants were also made familiar
with the ground water travel and capture zone calculations, along with the examples of ground water
treatment and re-injection. This study proved beneficial to the participants in order to develop their
understanding on how the nature possess a self-cleansing capacity, and how can we back calculate the
cause of certain disease in an area Vs pollutant discharge concentration and location.

offered its consultancy services to facilitate the process of drafting and revising India’s Market
Readiness Proposal (MRP) in consultation with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate

Biotechnology, MoST). Was responsible for preparing detailed engineering drawing of the treatment
system and flow charts for approvals. Was also responsible for giving alternate design schemes based

involved in altering the design of supporting plates for MBR based on new MBR models.(ongoing)
Team member in developing a transparency framework for Implementing INDCs in India (funded by
MacArthur Foundation). The project involves undertaking preparatory work with a view to assist the
government of India on two areas: 1) National Inventory Management System (NIMS), 2) Tracking the
progress on mitigation actions, plans and policies. Was involved as a resource person for waste sector
emissions and NIMS development.
Team member for conducting a three day sustainability audit of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory CTO 2 plant at
Hyderabad in March 2017 for assessing plant performance in relation to Planet pillar. The audit was in
relation to the application for Frost & Sullivan and TERI' s Sustainability 4.0 Awards
Team member for environmental audit of Deepak fertilizers and Petrochemical Corporation Limited,
MIDC, Taloja, Mumbai. Was involved in site visit to plant for gathering information with respect to
hazardous waste and effluents generated. The management of various wastes generated from the
premises was studied, analyzed and improvement reported. This activity also involved filling up form V
for DFPCL to be submitted to MSPCB.
Team member for conducting a Training Program on Environmental Pollution and its Health Impacts –
Practical Aspects" during 2016 - 17. Responsible as a lead author and resource person for Municipal
solid waste health correlation during the three days training program for SPCB, CPCB and PCC staff.

Principle investigator for analysis of used beverage carton for Tetra Pak in cities of Ha Noi and Ho Chi
Minh in Viet Nam. Evaluated the present status of waste management and composition of MSW at these
two cities and analyzed UBC recycling rates.
Team member in WASH project funded by USAID and Coca-Cola for slums in Kolkata and Chennai.
He has been involved in evaluating baseline survey analysis reports by local NGOs in context with
predefined questionnaire prepared by TERI. Supervised drinking water sample collection at both the
city slums and analyzed the water sampling reports. Also responsible for stakeholder mapping for
WASH in these communities. Was also involved in preparation of five reports; a. socio economic and
behavior assessment for Kolkata and Chennai; b. Water quality analysis report; c. health and hygiene; d.
stakeholder mapping and e. intervention report. Was involved in deciding methodology for intervention
based on weigh matrix and choosing sanitation as the intervention. Modification and construction of the
toilet complexes at both Chennai and Kolkata and organizing Video productions for both the study
areas.
Team member and an area lead of waste sector for “Assessment of impacts, adaptation, vulnerability
and mitigation of climate change in Andhra Pradesh”. – worked as team lead for collection of secondary
data from state agencies and other sources on waste of 13 districts over past years. Used IPCC 2006
model to evaluate the GHG emissions from the 13 districts of A.P over years 2005/06 till 2012/13.
Principle Investigator for “Post consumer carton management study for Tetra Pak India” held in 16
cities across south Asia.- The objective of this study was to explore the collection and recycling
practices of PCCs and the quantity of PCCs recovered by waste dealers in Delhi, Lucknow, Srinagar,
Jammu, Kolkata, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bangalore, and Chennai
in India, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Kathmandu in Nepal, and Colombo in Sri Lanka. The study involved
understanding the value chain and the economics involved in Tetra Pak cartons collection and recycling
and assessed the quantum of pulping rejects from low grade paper waste at paper mills. It also
highlighted the perceptions of the critical stakeholders (low grade paper waste dealers and recycling
paper mills) with regard to up-scaling collection and recycling.
Lead author for waste sector in “Corporate vision document for tackling climate change” towards
CoP21.- Corporate Vision on Climate Change was the Indian business’s vision on various aspects of
tackling climate change and aligning them to the Government of India schemes and programs, in the
given regulatory framework. It captures the interventions across the industries, including interventions
in waste sector. This initiative commenced at the High Level Corporate Dialogue (HLCD) on 4th Feb,
2015 with 250 industry representatives from over 100 top companies, including more than 45 CEOs and
over 120 senior staff members. It also included representatives from international government agencies,
multilateral and bi-lateral organizations, and academia. TERI hosted HLCD 2015 as a curtain raiser to
its flagship event Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.
Involved as a team member for “Study on quantification of the Greenhouse Gas mitigation potential of
the various development initiatives undertaken by Government of India”. for MoUD.- The objective of
the proposed study was to quantify the GHG mitigation potential of various development initiatives
undertaken by Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India under Jawaharlal Nehru National
Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), Swachh Bharat Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT), and Smart Cities Initiative
Involved as a team member in evaluating GHG emissions from WWTP’s using IPCC model for
“Identify key strategies and interventions to reduce the carbon footprint for Horlicks across the value
chain”. for GSK.- Study involved identification of various wastewater treatment technologies adopted
by supply chain and modeling GHG emissions considering capacity and treatment efficiencies.
Involved as a team member in preparation of comprehensive industry document for automobile
manufacturing industries for CPCB.- Involved as a team member for compilation and analysis of air and

water samples from various automobile industries and writing the COINDS report. Also was involved in
suggesting VOC emission standards from stacks of paint shops of automobile industries.
Involved as a team member and waste sector lead in evaluating GHG emission and mitigation
methodology up till year 2051 using IPCC model for wastewater and solid waste section for “Modeling
studies on Green house gas emission and emission intensity of Indian economy” for MoEFCC.- The
study analyzed a system of models and frameworks to evaluate and prioritize key GHG mitigation
options for the energy, waste and other non-energy sectors in India; provide an understanding of the
technology and financial needs to move towards alternative options; and examine socio-economic and
the environmental impacts of applying these mitigation options. The study also involved estimation of
GHG emissions from major landfill sites in India.
Involved as a team member and trainer for taking workshops at schools for “Corporate sponsorship for
Back to earth- an initiative towards safeguarding environment adopted by TERI” for SBH.- Included 6
schools in Delhi and batches of primary section and senior section were trained on various aspects of
solid and liquid waste and their management.
Involved as a team member in “Joint study agreement on India’s medium to long term energy choices”
for SHELL. Evaluated cities based on their existing waste treatment infrastructure, collection
efficiencies and waste disposal techniques.
