IPY 2007-2008 Concept
ICSU and WMO are co-sponsoring:
An intensive burst of internationally coordinated, interdisciplinary, scientific research and observations focussed on the Earth’s Polar regions starting in 2007
IPY 2007-2008 Objectives
Capture the interest and involvement of polar residents, schoolchildren, the public and decision-makers globally
Seek major advances in knowledge and understanding
Establish a legacy of new or enhanced observational systems, facilities, infrastructure and research networks
Ensure unprecedented access to the data generated
Attract and develop the next generation of polar scientists and engineers
IPY 2007-2008 and the EU
34 Countries involved in IPY 2007-2008, including 14 EU nations
Of the order of 10,000 researchers involved in IPY projects
USA and Canada are the major individual nations contributing IPY proposals with UK third, but Europe is collectively the major regional contributor
European researchers are involved in over 70% of IPY proposals
*** FP6 and FP7 do not entirely map onto IPY but some FP6 programmes are linking to IPY
