This is it! The final competition level for the Evaluation and Humorous
Speech Contests at the 201 3 District 47 Fall Conference. After
approximately 1 60 club contests, 34 area contests and seven division
contests, the last seven standing wil l compete for the title of Best
District Speaker. I t is an honor and privi lege to watch these members as
they continue to develop their humorous-speaking skil ls and master the
art of evaluation. Who wil l earn first place in our district contest’s Hall of
Fame? Well , you wil l have to attend our Fall Conference to find out!
Putting a conference together enables members to learn skil ls they may
not normally acquire in a club meeting: planning and execution; project
management; critical and creative thinking; team-building; delegation;
situational analysis and judgment; time management. Interested in
joining the team? Just volunteer when you register onl ine, or contact
one of the committee chairs l isted on Page 3 of this issue.
Our conferences offer various activities for members and non-members alike. The District Council meeting provides
an opportunity for club presidents and vice presidents education to have their voice heard by voting on district
business. Non-members can learn new skil ls at our educational workshops. Do you know someone who is
interested in Toastmasters? Invite them to the conference! When they see how all Toastmasters in District 47 get
together to support and learn from each other, they wil l want to join, too!
This Fall Conference is particularly special because of our VIPs: International President-Elect Mohammed Murad
and 201 2 World Champion of Public Speaking Ryan Avery. They're also featured in this issue.
Registration closes on November 1 . The event is sure to be sold out and no on-site registration wil l be accepted, so
sign up today at the district website: www.toastmastersd47.org.
I can’t wait you see you all there!

Fellow Toastmasters, we are just days away from realizing one of the most
exciting events on our District’s Calendar: our 201 3 Fall Conference, under the
theme “Heroes & Vil lains." Your dynamic team of district leaders, including area
and division governors, are busy knitting the final seams together. The entire
production, meanwhile, is being orchestrated by an enthusiastic and creative
conference chair, Phyll is May, DTM — also known as “The Fiery Retiree."
No matter how dynamic our cast and how creative our producer, this
production cannot succeed without you! Therefore, whether you’re a
registered attendee, a volunteer, sponsor, advertiser, session presenter or
contestant, I ’d l ike to thank you for your support on behalf of the district’s
leadership team and all who are working behind the scenes to ensure our
attendees have the most rewarding experience possible.
The educational sessions are designed to make you a better public speaker, a
better leader and a better person. There’s the special session for first-timers
on Saturday morning. We wil l welcome almost two dozen new Distinguished
Toastmasters (DTMs) during the DTM Walk at the Saturday evening banquet.
Then there are the speech contests. At this writing, 1 4 j ittery persons are right now trying to calm their nerves as
they prepare to compete in the Evaluation Contest and the Humorous Speech Contest. I t’s going to be “HOT”!
Who’s coming to dinner? You wil l come face to face with some outstanding “Heroes” from not only South Florida
and The Bahamas but from around the world. You’l l meet and be inspired by Toastmasters International President-
Elect Mohammed Murad, DTM, as well as 201 2 World Champion of Public Speaking Ryan Avery, who is the
youngest-ever Toastmasters world champion.
When this publication is released, you’l l only have a few days before registration closes. Act now and register to join us
November 8-1 0 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the big showdown between the “Heroes & Vil lains."
SEE YOU THERE!

The past few weeks have been rather exciting for the marketing team. We
have been busy making plans to improve the district’s services to you. I want
to review some of these milestones so that you can fol low our work:
New Marketing Chairs Established: There are some 28 positions in marketing
and many of them have been fi l led. We are sti l l looking for more talent, however,
and need YOU. If you feel that you are a model Toastmaster who can be the face
of District 47 and your division, please contact us to become part of our dynamic
team today. Keep on the lookout as we regularly announce new marketing chairs.
The District Leadership Library: An integral part of our vision to create a
successful transition of leadership is our challenge to create an electronic
l ibrary of documents, form, guides and templates that wil l be available for
leaders at the club, area and division levels. We wish to continual ly equip our
leadership with the tools needed to excel in their roles. Would you like to be a
part of this growing movement? Contact us today for more details.
The District Source: A tremendous amount of data has to be constantly disseminated to all leaders by a large number of
district chairs. In that stead, we are proud to introduce The District Source. This document wil l be sent monthly; it wil l
present announcements, updates, periodicals and notices in a visual ly appealing way and wil l encourage greater
participation from the leadership. Would you like to be a part of this growing movement? Contact us today for more details.
The District Services Desk: A new feature for our conferences, this is a special desk at both conferences that
serves as a helpful portal of information, tips and guides for the members in attendance. This wil l enable delegates to
sign up as coaches, sponsors and mentors and to volunteer for other leadership opportunities.
Please be reminded that marketing incentives are currently in ful l swing and they provide many opportunities for your
club, area and division to benefit and grow from top achievement. Challenge, yourself, your club and your colleagues
to achieve these incentives and gain rewards for your clubs!
See you in a few weeks with the new marketing team!! We cannot wait to serve you and develop a plan with your
help to ensure the District’s success in the coming years!

Aha!
One of the benefits of Toastmasters membership is receiving our organization’s
magazine, Toastmaster, every month. I ’ve found the articles, advice and ideas in
every issue a valuable adjunct to practice and evaluation at regular meetings.
There are two articles that stand out in my mind for their particularly important
advice. While on the surface they address two different subjects, they both
conclude touching on the same theme: rapport and trust.
Jack Vincent’s article in the December 201 2 issue, “Pitching Trust, ” focuses on
the most critical ly important ingredient in speaking to convince, whether asking
a prospect to buy a product (my own experience) or an executive committee to
buy into a plan or strategy devised by a co-worker. While describing a
product’s features, functions, design and versati l i ty is essential , the deal fal ls
apart where trust has not been earned. This means tuning in to an individual’s personal “wavelength,” getting access
to his thinking, needs and preferences, al l by l istening, observing reactions and asking questions. Only connecting
l ike this fosters trust. Whether a buyer realizes it consciously or not, when he buys the product or service, he’s also
buying into an ongoing relationship with the company behind it. Trust is essential .
A second article, by Allen Schoer of the TAI Group consulting firm, appeared a few months earl ier, this one focusing
on the dynamics and ingredients of storytel l ing. Schoer recalls the “3 R's” from our earl iest days of school, and
points out that the “3 I 's” are equally important in storytel l ing: Invitation (what advertising executives call “teasers”
that draw listeners’ immediate attention); Imagination, the component that excites l isteners’ minds to possibi l ities
(l ike JFK’s talk about putting a man on the moon and bringing him back safely); and Impact, Schoer using the word
to mean how the content connects with l isteners on an intel lectual or emotional level. Or both. When we consider
this more closely, we realize this is another manifestation of trust and rapport so essential in sel l ing.
As we go through life, there are many things we come to know or understand intuitively but are sometimes unsure
of. Sometimes, when it is verbalized in speech or writing by someone else in a way that confirms our thoughts, we
experience “Aha” moments. I ’ve found quite a few over the last couple of years in my monthly Toastmaster
magazine. I f you haven’t been giving your copy much attention, I ’d suggest it deserves more. I t may lead you to
quite a few “Ahas” of your own.
Sincerely,
Douglas Shachnow, ACG/ALB

Contests and conferences often provide
opportunities to be on-site reporters and
photographers, providing information and
service to and from the club and district.
This works well with social media. District
members have primari ly used Facebook,
with some use of Twitter. District 47
webmasters also have posted photos and
information on our website.
The hashtag #tmd47 is reserved on Twitter for District 47 to assist
members and friends to see the tweets (posts). Area Governor
Chris Shields, head photographer for the 201 3 Spring Conference,
initiated the use of the application Bizzabo during the conference.
District 47 Lt. Governor Marketing Damien Mil ler is initiating the
use of the application Wassup for the 201 3 Fall Conference.
Pinterest, Instagram and LinkedIn also are beneficial sites.
Photos are fast ways to tel l a story while capturing memories for
attendees and engaging the attention of viewers. A slideshow of a
recent event is a fun way to begin or end a meeting, or even as
members arrive before the meeting. Photos and special stories
may stoke decisions to attend future events, motivating friends and
family to visit and join Toastmasters. Many relationships are
enhanced when multiple friends or family members are involved
with Toastmasters.
Photos may not be taken of contestants during competitions, and you
must have permission before posting anyone's photo on a social site.
I t is more acceptable to post photos of groups — and to be sure the
images are as flattering as possible. When in doubt, ask or refrain.
Please feel welcome to ask your PR Team, club officers or TRIO if you
have any questions.

Boca Raton Advanced Toastmasters
How many times have you as club officers and/or toastmasters of the day had to
scramble to fi l l the roles expected for a successful club meeting? This is a
common situation, but it, emphatical ly, should not be. To draw upon a common
mil itary training axiom, club members need to “col laborate to graduate.” That is the
core value of the Toastmasters experience and should be clearly communicated to
and understood by every club member.
Regardless of their status, new or continuing, members need to know that they are
expected to contribute on a regular basis to the complete range of club activities.
Similar to the Marine Corps commercial, clubs do not just need member
applications . . . they need commitments! This requirement is addressed in the
New Member Ceremony, but it needs to be periodical ly reinforced. Members
should clearly understand, and occasionally be reminded, that the ful l benefits of the Toastmasters experience are not
l imited to regular speaking opportunities, but also include participation in the myriad roles to make any meeting
successful . . . as well as leading to the completion of the Leadership Track.
This premise bears repeating: Membership in Toastmasters is not just a process of application, but a commitment to
the club and its members. I t requires sustained involvement in the ful l range of club activities not just speaking
engagements. In turn, this involvement implies regular and sustained attendance at club meetings to generate both
personal growth and support of the growth of others.
The common Club Mission Statement includes the phrase “provide a supportive and positive learning experience.”
This experience is not a “lone ranger” effort, but requires the commitment of al l club members to achieve. I t may
involve a form of tough love, but we need to remind our members of their responsibi l ities and our shared expectations
to be successful as individuals and clubs.

Cultivate Active Listening! Yes, we all have them in our teams/clubs. We call them
"squeaky wheels," "whiners" and "complainers," and we tend to tune them out in a venting
session. Active l istening allows a leader to discover needs that may not be obvious to the
untrained ear. Before you click on the "mute" button, pay attention to the keywords used and

Over the years, David has held many club officer positions, including president.
He has been an area governor and Division B governor and has served District

“During this time, I could see many people missing the opportunity to learn from
this program,” he said. “The importance of the HPL is you can enhance your
leadership skil ls from the project process. Anyone can earn their HPL and that’s
my vision.”
David explained that HPL is a five-project program offering instruction and
practice in several leadership skil ls and activities, such as developing a mission

Many Toastmasters leave the program after completing the Competent

AROUND THE DISTRICT: OUR FELLOW TOASTMASTERS
Exploring Life in Other WorldsBy Hieu Huynh, DTM
Have you ever been to another planet?
Well , you don’t have to be an astronaut to
explore other worlds. Other clubs may
seem worlds apart from your own, but we
share a common bond. All the
Toastmasters you see at the trainings,
contests and conferences come from these
strange worlds. What’s not strange are the
friendly faces and warm greetings.
The differences are what make each world
unique. Besides different speakers and
different speeches, you wil l see variations
on the other roles. Some clubs have joke
masters, body language monitors, raffle
masters, or videographers for recording
speeches. Others have educational
moments or round-robin evaluations. In
South Florida, we have clubs that operate
in other languages: Spanish, Portuguese
and Chinese. To point out a speaker’s
crutch words, I have heard bells, cl ickers,
squeaky toys and buckets of nails (you get
to hear them in other languages too).
These other worlds may have special
events to welcome you. In June at Sunset
Speakers Toastmasters, we had visitors
come to our 1 5th-anniversary Great Gatsby
event, where we dressed up like it was the
Roaring 20’s. In September at Palm Beach
Advanced Toastmasters, we celebrated
Talk Like A Pirate Day dressed up like
pirates.
I t doesn’t have to be a costume or theme
event to be special. In September, Beacon
Point Advanced Toastmasters held an
Open House with a special treat:
complimentary wine at the end of the
meeting (the club held its event at Total
Wine & More)!
Of course, the main treats are the speeches. One of the most
memorable speeches I have heard was at the Open House event of
Palm City Orators in September. The speaker at this event talked
about how Toastmasters has changed his l ife, both professionally and
personally. At the end of this speech, he had the audience on their
feet with his conclusion: a marriage proposal! By the way, she said
yes (and so did the guests when asked to join the club)!
So there is l ife out there! Which world wil l you explore next? And what
experience wil l you bring back to your world?
You never know what you'll find when you visit another club. Palm
Beach Advanced Toastmasters (above) had a swashbuckling meeting
on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Sunset Speakers showed guests a
roaring (20s) good time at their Great Gatsby event (below).

Toastmasters Learning Master
Does Toastmasters equal success? This is a
question many of us ask ourselves and each other.
There are over 1 4,000 clubs and over 290,000
members around the world, and every one of us
measures our successes differently. There are
some stories, however, that can’t be argued.
There are some Toastmasters who make a
definite connection between their activity in a club
and their personal success. This is the story of just
one of those successes.
Debbie Kest started her career at American
Express over 20 years ago, at the Plantation
service center. Like many, she tried her hand at
different positions, from card account servicing
to credit servicing.
In 2009, her current position, reviewing statements, was in the process of being outsourced. She transferred, yet
again, to a new department: Reconcil iation. After two years perfecting her skil ls at the job, she set new goals and
found the courage to approach her director about a position as training coach. The meeting did not go well .
“I was very shy, had no eye contact and stuttered a bit because I was nervous,” Debbie recalls. “How could I even
think about being a coach if I could not even have a simple conversation with someone?”
A week later, Debbie met with her director again. He gave her a l ist of suggested goals to complete, before pursuing
the coaching position. The first item on the list? Join Toastmasters.
“I looked at him with a blank stare and thought he wanted me to make toasters! I just couldn't bel ieve it that he
wanted me to go to a public speaking meeting!”
Debbie made that first leap into the unknown. A week later, she visited the Sawgrass Toastmasters, where she met
Orly Amor, the club’s Vice President Membership. Orly took Debbie under her wing and encouraged her to move
forward. Debbie joined the fol lowing week.
Three weeks later, Debbie broke through her first Toastmasters barrier: She presented her Ice Breaker. She came to
the realization that, if she could make it through that challenge, she could achieve anything. She continued to report
back to her director. “He was so proud of me for taking this huge step forward in my development, ” she says.

23 THE SUNSHINER OCTOBER 2013
A few months later, she applied for and earned the coaching position. But that was not the end of her Toastmasters
journey. Not by a long shot.
In 2011 , she applied yet again for a new position. This time, her goal was to become an analyst. “Because of my
continued Toastmasters growth, I rocked my interview and earned the promotion!”
She arrived at her new work location, in Weston. A friendly new co-worker, Samantha O’Neil , introduced herself as a
Toastmaster. “I found a common ground with a perfect stranger who I now call my friend.”
In December, 2011 , Debbie and Samantha chartered a new corporate club: American Express Master
Communicators. “I t was a life-changing experience in which I grew even more from the challenge,” Debbie says. “I
then decided that I wanted to pursue the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award. I had many mentors and friends,
including Samantha, Lynda Hammond, and Lydia Harris, to guild and support me on my DTM path.”
Debbie finished the 201 2-201 3 year as a Distinguished Area Governor (Division A, Area 1 0). Just this year, only four
years after joining Toastmasters, she earned that DTM award.
“I final ly had the confidence, leadership and communications skil ls to post for a position as a marketing compliance
analyst. This was a huge opportunity and promotion for me.”
Many American Express employees had applied for the position, but Debbie nailed the interview. “I put into action
everything that I have been practicing and learning in Toastmasters for the last four years,” she says.
A few weeks later, she received the news that she was being offered the position. The hiring manager even provided
Debbie with positive feedback about her Toastmasters experiences.
“I absolutely credit Toastmasters for my success,” she says. “Joining Toastmasters four years ago taught me the
skil ls of delegating, mentoring, speaking and leadership. To this day, that director sti l l fol lows my Toastmasters
progress and is extremely proud of me for taking my development into my own hands while being a successful DTM!
Toastmasters is my YIPPY!”
Success Story: From Previous Page
Celebrate Heroic Milestones in Your Clubs! Our tenure in Toastmasters should be fi l led with memorable,
positive experiences. We can create these moments simply by celebrating milestones of heroism in our club:
• Have the club give a standing ovation for a member's Ice Breaker speech. Present
a ribbon and certificate purchased from Toastmasters International or made by the club members.
• Present a certificate for each level of accomplishment.
• Celebrate anniversaries, graduations and birthdays. Have a celebration cake for
thee milestones each month.
• Be compassionate when a member is going through a tough time. Phone calls, cards or
a show of club solidarity with special services helps us keep the commitment.
Members who experience "moments that matter" l ike these are our greatest sales
managers. They wil l share memories, invite colleagues to meeetings and support us
when they can. Let’s build a strong team of leaders through the special experiences
that we create.

Communication gets better with AGE: "Always Get Evaluated." Never pass up
an opportunity to be evaluated. Strive to use a Toastmasters manual when giving speeches or
conducting leadership projects, so the assigned evaluator can give you effective and
constructive feedback. By encouraging members to always use their manuals and ge
evaluated, you wil l not only help your club achieve educational goals but wil l also help your
members' growth.
