Learning Through Service. Duringtheir life at Daemen, virtually allundergraduate students engage invarious service learning activities.Students from every major and class

level participate as individuals orwith groups in short-term and long-term projects or assignments thatbenefit local, national, or globalcommunities. At Daemen, youmight work with environmentalorganizations or refugee groups; youcould tutor or mentor children incity schools; or you may provideservices in nursing homes, hospi-tals, or clinics. Our students make adifference throughout the localcommunity and the world.Thanks to these efforts, Daemenhas been named to the President’sHigher Education Service LearningHonor Roll, the highest federalrecognition a school can achievefor its commitment to service-

learning and civic engagement.

Global Education Programs. Intoday’s global economy, it makessense to learn all you can about dif-ferent cultures. What better way thanto visit one—or more—for yourself?International study is a staple of theDaemen experience. We offer semes-ters abroad, summer programs, andaccelerated January term trips coor-dinated either by individual profes-sors or through special programslike the Consortium for NorthAmerican Sustainability (CNAS),Center for Cross-Cultural Studies,Study in China, New Etruria CollegeAssociation (NECA), and an Inter-national Study Minor.

Student Profile. 1,705 undergradu-ates and 838 graduate students.Students come from all over theUnited States—Colorado, Connect-icut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland,Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio,Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas,and Washington—and from all overNew York. The average high schoolGPA for accepted students is 90 percent.

History. Established by the Sisters ofSt. Francis of Penance and ChristianCharity as Rosary Hill College in 1947(a liberal arts college for women), theCollege became co-educational in1971. In 1976, it became independ-ent and nonsectarian, changing itsname to Daemen College.

Student Life. With more than 50student organizations, themed din-ners, movie nights, and every otherkind of activity imaginable, there’salways something happening oncampus. Or, if you’re feeling adven-turous, the city of Buffalo is a mere15 minutes away. Enjoy the city’stheater, music, art, restaurants, andmajor-league sports—even a first-rate zoo. Or take a slightly longerroad trip and find yourself in scenicNiagara Falls. You’ll have the best ofall possible worlds at Daemen.

Residence Halls. Modern apart-ment-style residence halls provideseparate housing for male and femalestudents, in addition to our existingfive-story residence hall for freshmen.All residence halls have kitchens,laundry facilities, lounges, and in-room phone/Internet connections.Breakfast, lunch, and dinner areserved on weekdays in the WickStudent Center. Brunch and dinnerare served on Saturdays and Sundays.Adequate parking is available.

Wick Student Center. Full-servicemeals are served in the main din-ning hall, with an _ la carte selectionin the snack bar. The recreation

room and Cyber Cafe are popularspots for socializing and relaxingduring the day or evening. Pooltables, ping-pong, foosball, andother games are available, as well asa large-screen TV, DJ booth, anddance floor. Wick Student Centeralso houses a multipurpose socialroom, information desk, and severallounges and meeting rooms.

Academic Computing Services. TheAcademic Computing Center (ACC)maintains servers for remote access,e-mail, the Web, and other Internetservices. Internet accounts are avail-able without charge to all Daemenstudents. The ACC offers trainingworkshops on a variety of programsand applications.

Financial Aid. Daemen College pro-vides significant scholarship oppor-tunities based on student ability.These range from $14,000-$19,850Trustee Scholars awards (studentsmust compete for these) to $3,000-$10,000 awards. Our students arealso eligible for a variety of grants,loans, and on-campus jobs.Students who file the FAFSA anddemonstrate need may be eligiblefor Daemen grant funding.

Beginning with the class entering in the fall 2009, Daemen College will nolonger require applicants to submit standardized test scores (SAT, ACT)as part of the admission application. Our decision to make test scoresoptional reflects our commitment to enrolling students who reflect intellec-tual curiosity, persistence in reaching a goal, talent, motivation, and deter-mination to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. We relyon high school GPA, transcripts (including grade performance and rigor ofcourses selected), extracurricular activities, class rank, and counselor orteacher recommendations in making our admission decisions. We valuestrong writing skills, a solid secondary school program, and a student’spotential for making an important contribution to our campus community.We will also give careful consideration to applications from studentswhose preparation is unusual and who can provide strong recommenda-tions as to their ability to succeed in a college program of study.

The DaemenCore Curriculum

At Daemen, we take an innovativeapproach to general educationrequirements. We call it theDaemen Core Competencies, andit’s based on achieving seven life andacademic competencies rather thanon completing a list of requiredclasses. You must take 15 coursesduring your time at Daemen to mas-ter all seven competencies, but youcan pick and choose among a varietyof classes that catch your interest.
