CSE Diary for 11.02.2013
Local and foreign activity remained strong in the bourse with
turnover just closing under a LKR1bn as the market closed flat for the
day. The benchmark index was on a volatile path remaining the
green in the morning session and in the red in the afternoon to
finally recover to close flat. The S&P SL20 started the day on a
positive note but erased its gains to close 3 points down. Carsons,
Bukit Darah and Nestle were the most positively weighted counters
for the index while Commercial Bank, Shalimar and Lanka Orix
Leasing led the negative contributors.
The Banking and Finance sector continues to attract buying interest
with the sector attracting a large volume in trading with price
appreciations in most of the counters in the last couple of weeks.
However today we are seeing some profit taking in some of the
selected counters in the sector. A prudent investor may be watchful
in this type of situation. Investors are advised to grab the opportunity
to accumulate the counters in the sector on weakness rather than
chasing them in a rally.Hatton National Banks dominance in the market has not ended
with the counter registering 2 large crossings accounting for 1.4mn
shares at LKR145.0 while a single medium sized block of 68k shares
traded on-board at LKR147.1. Some profit taking led counter to dip
0.6% at closing at LKR148.3. Heavy interest continued to remain in
other banking sector counters as well led by Commercial Bank,
Sampath Bank and National Development Bank with the latter 2
banks recording new 52-week highs of LKR240.3 and LKR155.0
respectively. Interest in Sampath Bank kept the bank in green
territory with a gain of 0.8% at LKR240.0 while the other banks were
in the red amidst profit taking.Strong earnings which were in line with our expectations had re-
activated Textured Jersey in the last couple of trading days. The
counter saw 16mn shares changing hands at LKR9.5 off-board while
on-board interest witnessed a large number of mid-sized blocks. The
counter gained 2.0% during the day to close at LKR10.2. Interest was
also observed in the blue chips John Keells Holdings, Carsons and
Dialog.Europe Stocks Drop as Novo Nordisk Plunges on Drug Delay:
European stocks declined as Novo Nordisk A/S failed to win
American approval for new insulin. U.S. index futures rose, while most
Asian markets were closed for the Lunar New Year. The Stoxx Europe600 Index fell 0.4% to 286.3 at 11:21 a.m. in London.Brent Trades Near Nine-Month High:Brent traded near a nine-month
high in London amid concern that tension with Iran may lead to
disruption of Middle Eastern exports. Brents premium to U.S. crude
narrowed for the first time in nine days. Brent for March settlement
was at USD118.56 a barrel, down 34 cents, on the ICE Futures Europe
exchange at 9:38 a.m. London time.
Banks dominate but slowdown uptrend on profittaking

Sri Lanka Standard Chartered Bank unit confirmed at AAA (lka)'-Fitch: An AAA (lka)' rating of Sri Lanka'sStandard Chartered Bank has been confirmed by Fitch Ratings, with a stable outlook, based on it being part
of a lender that has a higher international rating. Fitch says an appeal on a LKR27 bn fine, which is higher
than its equity, imposed by the regulator for alleged foreign exchange control violations is pending. "Fitch
considers it extremely likely that timely support would be available from SCB, should it be required," Fitch
said in a statement. "Such support would be subject to regulatory restrictions or delays in remitting money
into Sri Lanka, although Fitch currently sees this as a remote prospect.Adverse changes to such transfers and
litigation risks leading Fitch to revise its expectations of parental support could be negative for the rating."

Sri Lanka stockbroker devising code of ethics: Sri Lanka's stock brokers are devising a code of ethics toimprove standards with mechanisms for enforcement also being proposed, a media report said. Sri Lanka's
Ceylon Today newspaper quoted Ravi Abeysuriya, head of Heraymila Securities, a Colombo brokerage as
saying, that a code based on New Zealand was considered best for the island. "In my view, it is none other
than the industry itself which should regulate itself," Abeysuriya was quoted as saying. "Every profession
needs to have a particular set of code of ethics, in order to preserve sustainability within the industry."
"Hopefully the CSBA (Colombo Stock Brokers Association) will by the end of this month come out with a code
of conduct and also a procedure for enforcement." The report quoted other brokers as saying that both Sri
Lanka securities regulator and the stock exchange also had such codes, but there was no monitoring
mechanism.

SriLankan to modernize fleet: SriLankan Airlines (UL) was contemplating a phase replacement of six of itsaging aircraft in a major fleet modernization drive, said Kapila Chandrasena Director/Chief Executive Officer
SriLankan Airlines addressing the media at the agreement signing ceremony in Colombo held between
SriLankan and Amadeus to migrate UL into Amadeus ful l Altea suite by 2014. He said a part of the capital
infusion of USD500 mn sanctioned by the government would be used for this purpose and modern wide
bodied, long haul next generation aircraft would be added to the fleet from the end of 2014 and the phase
replacement would go on for the next five to 10 years. He said this move was necessary considering the
expansion in the global travel market particularly the Asia Pacific region which would occupy 31 % of the
global travel market by 2031. He said with joining oneworld, the current 60 destinations of UL would grow to
860 and the fleet modernization drive would facilitate that requirement. Meanwhile SriLankan Airlines, and
the Amadeus IT Group, inked the landmark agreement on Thursday that will see the airline migrate to
Amadeus full Altea suite by 2014. The deal, which is the first of its kind for Amadeus in the Indian
subcontinent, will enable both SriLankan Airlines and its sister airline Mihin Lanka, to adopt Amadeus next
generation IT suite to manage its mission-critical reservations, ticketing, inventory and departure control
processes. At the same time, the agreement between SriLankan and Amadeus will help facilitate the airlines
entry into the oneworld global alliance. Currently Amadeus is the standard IT platform for the alliance with
more than half of the members of oneworld adopting the Amadeus Altea suite to date.

figures from both countries show. US exports and imports of goods last year totaled USD3.82 trillion, the USCommerce Department said last week. Chinas customs administration reported last month that the
countrys trade in goods in 2012 amounted toUSD3.87 trillion.Chinas growing influence in global commerce
threatens to disrupt regional trading blocs as it becomes the most important commercial partner for some
countries. Germany may export twice as much to China by the end of the decade as it does to France,

estimated Goldman Sachs Group Inc.s Jim ONeill. For so many countries around the world, China is
becoming rapidly the most important bilateral trade partner, ONeill, chairman of Goldman Sachss asset
management division and the economist who bound Brazil to Russia, India and China to form the BRIC
investing strategy, said in a telephone interview. At this kind of pace by the end of the decade many
European countries will be doing more individual trade with China than with bilateral partners in Europe .
The U.S. economy is also double the size of Chinas, according to the World Bank. In 2011, the U S gross
domestic product reached USD15 trillion while Chinas totaledUSD7.3 trillion. Chinas National Bureau ofStatistics reported Jan. 18 that the countrys nominal gross domestic product in 2012 totaled 51.93 trillion
yuan (USD8.3 trillion). It is remarkable that an economy that is only a fraction of the size of the US economy
has a larger trading volume, Nicholas Lardy, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International
Economics in Washington, said in an e-mail. The increase isnt all the result of an undervalued yuan fueling
an export boom, as Chinese imports have grown more rapidly than exports since 2007, he said.

Euro Ministers Seek New Crisis Momentum as Unrest Returns: European finance chiefs will seek to win backcrisis-management momentum to navigate through emerging political pitfalls after markets signaled last
week that the three-year crisis is far from over. Ministers from the 17-member euro area meet in Brussels
today to discuss aid to Cyprus and Greece as a tightening election contest in Italy and a political scandal inSpain disrupt market calm. Group of 20 finance chiefs and central bankers will gather in Moscow Feb. 15-16.
We dont know yet how were going to get out of the crisis , Wolfgang Franz, the chairman of Chancellor
Angela Merkels council of economic advisers, told Welt am Sonntag. If the crisis is a marathon, weve got
two-thirds of the course behind us. But the last third is always the hardest. European Union leaders who last
week reached a seven-year budget agreement that for the first time cuts spending will look ahead to Italys
Feb. 24-25 elections as polls show the vote might fail to deliver a governing majority. European stocks last
week posted a second weekly drop as investor concern about policy roadblocks in Italy and Spain revived.
Yields on Italian 10-year bonds climbed to a year-to-date high of more than 4.5% as former Premier Silvio
Berlusconi narrowed the lead of front-runner Pier Luigi Bersani. The euros climb was broken last week,
falling 2% against the U.S. dollar to USD1.3365, after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi voiced
concern that euro strength could hamper the recovery.[Source: www.bloomberg.com]
Kuroda Says Additional BOJ Easing Can Be Justified for 2013: Asian Development Bank President HaruhikoKuroda, a potential candidate to head Japans Central Bank, signaled that he favors greater monetary
stimulus by the Bank of Japan this year. Some additional measures could be justified for 2013, Kuroda, 68,
said in an interview in Tokyo today, stressing that he was speaking in his capacity as an economist and chief
of the ADB, not as a BOJ contender. Japan, along with other nations, has really substantial room for
monetary easing, he said. Kurodas remarks indicate the BOJ would embrace more steps to end deflation
should Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominate him to succeed Masaaki Shirakawa and should he win
confirmation in Parliament. The BOJ last month announced it would start open- ended asset purchases only
in January 2014, and the board will keep its policy unchanged at a Feb. 13-14 gathering, according to amajority of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. Theres the equivalent of trillions of dollars of financial
assets that could be bought by the BOJ, according to Kuroda. He didnt specify how policy makers ought to
add liquidity. Kuroda supported the yens slide as a natural adjustment from overvaluation and said that the
global standard for central banks to achieve their inflation targets is about two years.
