What is Dark Matter? Dark Matter is what scientist believe the
universe is mostly comprised of. When calculating mass of the galaxy, their
were many discrepancies, and scientist felt that the only way to prove this was by creating an unknown matter
In 1933 Astronomer Fritz Zwicky came up with this concept
It wasn’t until the 1970’s that scientist coined the term Dark Matter
Scientists Thoughts
Dr. Margon, "Mother Nature is having a double laugh. She's hidden most of the matter in the universe, and hidden it in a form that can't be seen”
This shows us how the scientific community feels and how they are very frustrated by this aspect of space
What is it? (Taken Farther) Dark matter range from tiny subatomic
particles weighing 100,000 times less than an electron to black holes with masses millions of times that of the sun
There are two main categories of dark matter which are MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects), and WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles)
MACHOs are made of 'ordinary' matter, which is called baryonic matter
WIMPs is made up of non-baryonic matter.
Why is this Important?
This “theory” of dark matter is important because there a large number of matter not being accounted for.
Not only that this matter can make or break certain theories of how the universe was created.
This matter makes up about 25% of the universe
What is Dark Energy?
This an unexplainable force that is drawing galaxies away from one another.
This energy is an attempt by scientist’s to explain the ever expanding universe
This energy is about 70% of space
Thoughts
Albert Einstein knew that were the places in space didn’t appear to have matter, their had to be something there
This energy is a property of space itself, therefore it cannot be diluted as space expands, but since there is more energy forming it actually gets stronger
Theories Some think that this energy is a new type
of fluid or field something that fills all of space but something whose effect on the expansion of the Universe is the opposite of that of matter and normal energy
Quantum theory- "empty space" is actually full of temporary ("virtual") particles that continually form and then disappear
Those are just two theories on dark energy and what people think it could be
Graph Explained
The graph on the last slide showed how much of the universe is made up of matter or energy that we don’t even really know what it is. It goes to show you just how vast our universe is, considering that planets and stars only make up about 5% of the universe.
