Tropical Rainforest What are tropical rainforests? What are the
uses of tropical rainforest? What is deforestation? Why does
deforestation occur? Where are tropical rainforests found and which
areas have been deforested? How does deforestation impact people
and the environment? How should we manage deforestation? 3
Slide 4
Lesson Objective Define deforestation With reference to named
examples, explain the causes of deforestation 4
Slide 5
What do you observe? 5 What can you infer?
Slide 6
What is deforestation? It is the cutting down and removal of
all or most of the trees in a forested area. [Pg 86] If it is not
managed properly, it can lead to the permanent destruction and
eventual disappearance of a once renewable resource. 6
Explain the causes of deforestation. [8] 1.Agricultural
activities [2] Explain how agricultural activities cause
deforestation. [1] Large areas of the rainforest are burned and
cleared to support large-scale commercial agricultural activities
so that there is sufficient food to meet peoples needs. Give an
example of agricultural activities that has caused deforestation.
[1] For example, about 242,000km 2 of the Amazon rainforest has
been converted to soya bean farms by 2010 to process soya beans
into products like soya milk and tofu. 9

However Though human activities have led to deforestation, it
could be a key to development since: The clearing of forests
provides land for communities to build houses, factories, offices
Roads can be built and this makes trade and transport easier The
land can be converted to agricultural land to allow the production
of more food 13
