How is that possible?
The IEC 60038 standard specifies on an international basis
that the actual voltage of single-phase and three-phase
power grids can deviate from the nominal voltage by plus/
minus ten percent. Single-phase consumers must therefore
operate reliably within a range of 207 to 253 volts. Analo-
gously, this applies to three-phase appliances with voltage
tolerances from 360 to 440 volts. In view of this, electrical
devices must be designed so that they achieve their nomi-
nal values at the minimum permissible voltage and that
the thermal load is not exceeded at the maximum permis-
sible voltage. As a consequence, electricity can be saved by
supplying only the amount of voltage actually needed by
electrical consumers.
What does DeltaVolt do?DeltaVolt systems control the supplied mains voltage
and ensure that it remains at a constant level in accord-
ance with IEC 60038 that is also ideal in terms of busi-
ness and technical requirements. Especially in the case
of voltage-dependent consumers, this results in reduced
power consumption. Examples of usage are light fixtures
with conventional or inductive ballasts and AC motors in
partial load operation.
What is the advantage of DeltaVolt for you?Rising energy costs make optimization of power consump-
tion one of the most important tasks for enterprises. Delta-Volt systems from Ruhstrat are able to significantly reduce
power consumption for long-term reduction of operating
costs. The performance and reliability of the equipment is
not affected in any way.
According to a McKinsey study* commissioned by the Ger-
man industry lobby group BDI, voltage stabilization sys-
tems can reduce power consumption by up to 15 percent.
These savings potentials can be realized with DeltaVolt. The
systems control the supplied mains voltage and ensure that
it remains at a constant level in accordance with IEC 60038
that is also ideal in terms of business and technical require-
ments. This reduces power consumption and energy costs.
Reduction of power consumption by up to 30 % for lighting systems
Reduction of power consumption by up to 15 % including general consumers
Stabilization of voltage also in case of extreme load variations and voltage fluctuations
Lamps last longer, resulting in lower life cycle costs
Reduced environmental impact due to reduction of Co2 emissions by 636 g / kWh**

What is the technical principle underlying DeltaVolt? The technical principle of these systems is based on
the technology of transformer-type voltage stabilizers.
DeltaVolt systems consist of a variable transformer with
three single-phase AC motors, a serial booster transformer
and an electronic regulator, all mounted in one housing.
A set-point voltage is configured using a PLC controller.
The output voltage is measured and then compared with
the highly stable set-point value. If the output voltage dif-
fers from the set-point value by more than 1 %, boost-
er voltage is adjusted by the motorized regulating trans-
former until the output voltage has reached the set-point

value again. The deviation is added to or subtracted from
the mains voltage accordingly. Temporary voltage fluctua-
tions lasting less than 0.1 second are ignored. The volt-
age is stabilized separately for each mains lead (only with
DeltaVolt PLC). The set-point voltage is set based on the
voltage drop so that the minimum voltage of 207/360 V
required by IEC 60038 reaches the last consumer.
Where can DeltaVolt be used? The possible uses for DeltaVolt systems are almost unlim-
ited. Wherever electrical power is needed, its utilization can
be optimized.
The efficiency of voltage-dependent consumers, such as
those used in the manufacturing industries, wholesale and
retail segments, restaurants and hotels, public administra-
tion, airports and railway stations, indoor swimming pools,
convention centres and logistics firms, can be improved by
regulating the voltage.
Examples of voltage-dependent consumers:
Lamps with spiral-wound filaments
Fluorescent tubes with conventional and
low-loss ballasts
Discharge lamps
AC motors in the partial load range
(constant operation, low torque)
Areas of application:
Ventilation systems
Conveyor systems
Lighting systems in business and industry
Offices and administration facilities
Street and tunnel illumination
Cold storage and refrigeration systems
What are the effects on motorized consumers? The following effects can be observed with motorized con-
sumers. As the voltage increases past the nominal volt-
age, the losses in the stator increase proportionally; this
effect is also present when the motor is under partial load
or in idle state. Power can be saved by using asynchro-
nous motors powered directly from the mains network. In
asynchronous motors the torque/RPM curve flattens out
as the voltage decreases, the pullout torque is reduced
and the RPMs decrease depending on the characteristics
of the driven machine. Although the rotor losses increase
as the voltage decreases, this is more than compensated
by the reduction of the stator losses, so that the tempera-
ture of the machine tends to decrease instead of increase.
Therefore, the service life of the winding or bearings is not
affected.
Where are the particularly high savings potentials? The applications for which voltage reduction is always
worthwhile are lighting systems with conventional ballasts
or inductive ballasts. When the mains voltage is stabilized
in accordance with IEC 60038, the efficiency of fluorescent
tubes with inductive ballasts is improved. When the volt-
age for a T8 58W lamp with inductive ballast (EE1=B1) is
lowered by 8.7 %, the electrical power in the lamp drops
15 %, in the inductive ballast ≈ 36 %, the total electric
power therefore ≈ 18 %, but the luminous power only 13 %.
The efficiency of the lamp is improved by 5 %.

How can the efficiency of DeltaVolt be described?Energy-saving measures always involve two aspects that
have to be taken into account. One goal of energy-saving
measures is efficiency; the other is protection of the envi-
ronment. In this respect, energy-saving measures are sub-
ject to analysis of key figures of the capital budgeting, such
as profitability, internal interest rates and the ROI period.
Before preparing a quotation, Ruhstrat conducts a tech-
nical analysis of the prospective customer to analyse
the consumer structure (lighting, motorized consumers,
DC motors, resistive consumers, etc.). The results of this
technical analysis, together with the electric bill provided
by the customer, are used to prepare a quotation that in-
cludes the following:
Recommendations for the energy-saving systems
to be used
Portrayal of the reduction in energy costs to be
achieved; relative in % and absolute in kWh/EURO
Investment costs, broken down by cost of device and
installation, in addition to return on investment (ROI).
What is the return on invest-ment of DeltaVolt?Every DeltaVolt quotation includes the ROI period for the
DeltaVolt system. The return on investment period is be-
tween 2 and 5 years, depending on the specific application.
Together with an experienced financial enterprise, Ruhstrat
offers leasing of the DeltaVolt system. The maximum leas-
ing period is 96 months. With an ROI period of 2 to 5 years
and a financing duration of 8 years, the monthly reduction
in energy costs is higher than the amount of the invest-
ment. Therefore, DeltaVolt strengthens the liquidity of its
users.
Where is the DeltaVolt in-stalled?The installation of a DeltaVolt system is extremely simple:
Integration of the system is fast and easy by simply install-
ing the unit downstream from the power company’s meter,
between the power supply and the consumer. Operations
are not disturbed in any way. The installation is carried out
only by experienced and competent personnel.
What we guarantee! For successful optimisation of the power consumption
with DeltaVolt systems, a detailed analysis of your actual
consumption is necessary. Only if all relevant parameters
are known is it possible to make a reliable prediction about
potential reduction of your power consumption. The de-
tailed analysis of the actual situation is therefore an impor-
tant step in the process of installing DeltaVolt. Experience
leads to conviction.
The individually calculated savings are guaranteed!

Project life cycle
1st step: Presentation of the DeltaVolt concept We explain to you the technical and legal conditions for
voltage regulation within the scope of DIN IEC 60038 and
describe in detail our DeltaVolt concept for reducing power
consumption for electrical devices.
2nd step: Analysis of the electrical devices Since not all electrical devices respond to voltage regula-
tion with the same reduction in consumption, we analyse
their structure thoroughly. We analyse constant power,
energy-constant and voltage-dependent consumers and
their respective power consumption and operating times.
A technician surveys the technical conditions at the in-
stallation site. He needs the assistance of one of your em-
ployees for only a few hours. The technician uses a power
measuring unit to make a reliable prediction of the poten-
tial savings. The power measuring unit records the voltage,
power output and current at a central location in your en-
terprise for a period of 4-7 days.
With state-of-the-art measuring technology and many
years of experience we can precisely determine the power
data for a particular area. This is necessary especially if on-
ly sub-areas of a company’s network need to be supplied
with regulated voltage.
All questions about the installation location and costs are
clarified during the quotation phase.
3rd step: Savings calculation / quotationBased on the technical analysis, the voltage / current and
power output measurements and the power consumption
data and prices provided by you, we calculate the savings
rate and make you an offer with a guaranteed return on in-
vestment for all services up until the start-up date.
4th step: Production / preparation for installationAll DeltaVolt systems are manufactured individually.
After the order is placed, Ruhstrat needs four to twelve
weeks to manufacture the system. During this time we also
make preparations for installing the system.
5th step: Installation / start-up / documentation of savingsDelivery, installation and start-up of the DeltaVolt system
with subsequent network analysis for initial measurement
of savings.
After start-up of the DeltaVolt system we record the pow-
er data with a network analysis device and document the
reduction. First a stable load is generated and then we
change the voltage to show the changed active power with
and without the DeltaVolt. All of this is documented with
a network analysis device.

ApplicationThe DeltaVolt PLC series is designed to reduce electricity
costs in three-phase power supply networks with unba-
lanced fluctuating loads. DeltaVolt systems control the
supplied mains voltage and ensure that it remains at a con-
stant level in accordance with IEC 60038 that is also ideal
in terms of business and technical requirements.
Areas of applicationDeltaVolt is suitable especially for general optimization of
power loss not only in all lighting systems, but also in non-
critical facilities operated together with them, such as mo-
torized devices, electric tools, etc.
DesignThe technical principle of these systems is based on the
technology of transformer-type voltage stabilizers. Delta-Volt systems consist of a variable transformer with three
single-phase AC motors, a serial booster transformer
and an electronic regulator, all mounted in one housing.
The function for manual disconnecting of the DeltaVolt system, primarily for maintenance purposes, can be used
as a bypass switch in case of a failure by switching from
OPERATION to BYPASS. Switching and monitoring mecha-
nisms, such as overload protection in the regulating trans-
former, intermediate circuit, temperature monitoring for
transformer windings and internal housing temperature,
trigger an acoustic warning in case of a failure; potential-
free contacts enable transmission of signals to the building
control system. In case of a failure, the output voltage is
raised to the input level to alleviate the load on the trans-
formers. DeltaVolt systems are equipped with powerful
cooling fans.
LoadThe output is intended primarily for three-phase currents
in star-connected electric circuits with three mains leads
and a neutral lead; a continuous unbalanced load of any
type, also single-phase, between mains leads and the neu-
tral lead is permissible up to the level of the nominal cur-
rent for the device. The output voltage between the three
mains leads and the neutral lead is readjusted within the
regulating range. The devices are suitable for the power
supply to resistive, inductive and/or capacitive equipment;
the voltage waveform of the mains grid is not affected.
When used according to specifications, no interference or
additional harmonics occur.
FeaturesThe DeltaVolt PLC series is available with stepless adjust-
ment between the mains voltage and operating voltage.
The operating voltage can be adapted to the power require-
ment by the regulating adjuster to ca. 90 % of the mains
voltage. Fluctuations in the voltages measured between
the leads L12, L22, L32 and the neutral lead are compen-
sated within the possible regulating range with a precisi-
on of ± 1 % of the nominal voltage. This regulating circuit
can achieve the maximum energy savings, since the entire
regulating range is available for stabilization of the opera-
ting voltage. The SIEMENS S7-300 PLC controller combi-
nes a programmable logic controller and an operator panel
in one unit. This allows modular expandable controllers in
a space-saving configuration. The PLC unit consists of the

The PLC offers the following connections:
24 freely programmable digital inputs
16 freely programmable digital outputs
4 freely programmable analog inputs

These functions allow metering, frequency measurements,
regulating and text prompting via the display.
Overload and temperature protectionOverload protectors in the intermediate circuit protect
the DeltaVolt from damage. In addition, a temperatu-
re protector protects the serial secondary and regulating
transformers. In case of a failure, the output voltage is
raised to the input level to alleviate the load on the trans-
formers. DeltaVolt systems are equipped with powerful

Bypass switchWhen a DeltaVolt system is is connected between electrical
consumers and the mains network, necessary maintenance
on the DeltaVolt system can be carried out only if the po-
wer from the mains network is completely switched off.
This means that the electrical consumers are without po-
wer. In industrial plants, production is not possible during
this time, resulting in lost profit. This situation can be avo-
ided with a bypass switch. The switch bypasses the regu-
lating unit during maintenance, so that the electrical con-
sumers can be connected directly to the mains network
without extensive modification. After completion of the
maintenance, one can switch back to the original position.
All DeltaVolt systems are equipped with a bypass switch for manual load switching as standard equipment. This
provides a safety barrier in the input and enables discon-
nection of the DeltaVolt system for maintenance work.
Mains connectionThe units are prepared for connection to a three-phase
four-wire system with a neutral lead and and earthed lead.

technology of transformer-type voltage stabilizers. Del-taVolt systems consist of a variable transformer with one
single-phase AC motor, a serial booster transformer and
an electronic regulator, all mounted in one housing. The
function for manual disconnecting of the DeltaVolt system,
primarily for maintenance purposes, can be used as a by-
pass switch in case of a failure by switching from OPERA-
TION to BYPASS. Switching and monitoring mechanisms,
such as overload protection in the regulating transformer,
intermediate circuit, temperature monitoring for transfor-
mer windings and internal housing temperature, trigger an
acoustic and optical warning in case of a failure; potential-
free contacts enable transmission of signals to the buil-
ding control system. In case of a failure, the output volta-
ge is raised to the input level to alleviate the load on the
transformers.
Mains connectionThe units are prepared for connection to a three-phase
four-wire system with a neutral lead and and earthed lead.
LoadThe output is intended for balanced three-phase currents
in star-connected electric circuits with three mains leads
and a neutral lead; a continuous unbalanced load of any
type, also single-phase, between mains leads and the neu-
tral lead is permissible up to the level of the nominal cur-
rent for the device. The devices are suitable for the power
supply to resistive, inductive and/or capacitive equipment;
the voltage waveform of the mains grid is not affected.
When used according to specifications, no interference or
additional harmonics occur.
FeaturesThe DeltaVolt Light series is available with stepless adju-
stment between the mains voltage and operating voltage.
The operating voltage can be adapted to the power require-
ment by the regulating adjuster to ca. 85 % of the mains
voltage. Fluctuations in the voltages measured between
the lead L22 and the neutral lead are compensated within
the possible regulating range with a precision of ± 1 % of
the nominal voltage. This regulating circuit can achieve the
maximum energy savings, since the entire regulating range
is available for stabilization of the operating voltage. For
reliable activation of the lighting, the output voltage is set
to the level of the input voltage. After the configured time
expires, the system switches to regulated mode.
