Department ofPsychiatryInstruction in psychiatry is given during the second, thirdand fourth years of the medical curriculum. Emphasis is onthe teaching of psychiatry as a medical discipline, includingthe biological, social and psychological mechanisms andmanifestations of psychiatric illness, as well as psychologicalreactions to other illnesses. Psychiatric disorders are commonand disabling illnesses. An explosion of knowledge resultingfrom research in neuroscience, genetics and epidemiology isleading to exciting advances in understanding and treating thesedisorders. Our department is heavily involved in this research, and our didactic curriculum integrates current clinical informationwith research advances to help students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to recognize these illnesses and understandthe basic principles of treatment.
William Greenleaf Eliot Division ofChild & Adolescent PsychiatryThe Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (http://wuchild.wustl.edu) offers a varied teaching program for medicalstudents, residents in psychiatry, and fellows at St. LouisChildren's Hospital and the Child Psychiatry Center. The centerprovides outpatient services to children with an array of mentaldisorders. Trainees are assigned to these various services, where they participate in diagnostic evaluations and see patientsin treatment, under the supervision of a fellow and the attendingphysician.

Andrey Anokhin, PhDGenetics of the Brain, Behavior and PsychopathologyCentral Institute for the Deaf (CID) Building660 S. Euclid Ave., Suite 1Phone: [email protected]
This research elective is intended for students interested incognitive neuroscience, biological psychology, psychophysiologyand behavior genetics. Dr. Anokhin's laboratory is investigatingthe relationships between genes, the brain and behavior inorder to better understand the complex etiology of mentaldisorders. Our main focus is on "externalizing" the spectrumof psychopathology characterized by deficits in inhibitory self-regulation, including ADHD, conduct disorder and addictivebehaviors. We are particularly interested in the intermediatephenotypes or endophenotypes mediating genetic risk foraddiction, such as impulsivity, risk taking, and abnormal affectiveprocessing of social-emotional information. In our laboratory-based studies with human volunteers, including twins, weinvestigate individual differences in brain activity using therecording of brain oscillations (event-related brain potentials)and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). For example,an ongoing longitudinal study of adolescent twins exploresthe developmental and genetic determinants of brain activityrelated to reward and punishment processing, inhibitory controlof behavior, and risk taking to identify prospective predictors ofsubstance abuse and associated behavioral problems. AnotherfMRI study using repeated assessments of the same individualsover time is focused on the identification of stable individualdifferences in brain activation related to inhibitory control, errormonitoring and reward processing that can be used as reliablephenotypes in genetic analyses. We are now starting a studythat will examine twins who are discordant for adolescentmarijuana use in order to identify the consequences of drugabuse for the brain, cognition and emotion and distinguish themfrom pre-existing risk factors. Interested students will be ableto learn a variety of methods used in these studies, such asthe recording and analysis of brain oscillations, event-relatedneural dynamics, startle response, autonomic measures, theadministration of neuropsychological and behavioral tests, and the statistical analysis of data. The format of this researchelective may include the following: (1) directed reading; (2)participation in laboratory experiments involving human subjects;(3) analysis of existing data from various research projects;and (4) designing and piloting new behavioral experiments.Qualifications include reliability and responsibility, the abilityto commit a specified amount of time per week and to work aschedule that can be negotiated on an individual basis, and goodcomputer skills.
